Vaccination has nothing to do with current illness. Only running nose does not need any treatment. If associated with wheezing then only nebulsation may be needed. It should be under supervision of pediatrician.

Galactosemia In Infants

MBBS, Diploma in Child Health
Pediatrician, Hyderabad

Galactosemia in infants. - know the reasons behind it!

An infant is usually called a bundle of joy and with good reason. There are simple and carefree, and bring a smile to your face with their antics. However, the mood and health of an infant can be tarnished due to an issue which is known as galactosemia.

What is galactosemia?
When a baby has galactosemia, he or she will have a problem when it comes to digesting galactose, which is something that is present not only in milk but in all milk products. Galactose is a sort of sugar, just like fructose and glucose is. As a matter of fact, lactose, which is what milk has, is, in fact, a combination of glucose and galactose. Also, when lactose is processed, it is broken down by the human body into its constituents.

The condition is something that is passed down through the genes of the parents of the baby. The condition would occur if the gene which causes a tendency for a baby to have galactosemia is present not only in one parent but both of them. A baby who has the condition will be lacking an enzyme which is known as the galt enzyme. The enzyme could also not be functioning as it should be under normal circumstances.

When it comes to the problem, it is very important, to say the least, to detect it sooner rather than later as if there is a build-up of unprocessed galactose which is allowed to occur, it can affect the baby adversely and in some cases, it can also be threatening to the life of the baby!

How does it affect a baby?
The problems which can erupt due to galactosemia include issues which affect organs such as the brain, eyes, liver and kidneys. It is interesting to take note of the fact that these are all organs which either have something to do either processing the blood or are heavily dependent on it. While a baby is not in the position in which he or she can communicate the issues that are being faced, when keeping an eye out for galactosemia, the signs which are displayed include an irritability of the baby as well as lacking consumption of the milk of the mother.

Even though galactosemia may not be the case, a doctor should be consulted as the exacerbated issue can include seizures and jaundice. It is to be kept in mind that galactose is something that can be found not only in the milk of the cow but also human milk as well as the milk of other animals such as goats.

My 2 months baby boy was vomiting a little bit of milk after feeding. some times after one hour of feeding he is spitting little bit of milk(look like card). Please suggest me to prevent the vomiting

Burp him regularly after each meal. When you put him to sleep ensure that the head end is elevated about 15 degrees. This is self limiting and usually finishes by 6 months of age

Everyone needs 7 to 8 hours of sleep daily, but some can do with lesser. As long as your child is comfortable and not irritable when he is awake it is fine.

Once you have stopped breast feeding your child then you can consider breast tightening with lift and enhancement and also tummy tuck surgery which will correct the problems and make you feel better.

Just remember to make a note of milestone for the baby and also take notes of the physical activity and weight also depends on the previous record on his birth day and if there are restricted activities than we have to think about the cause of weight gain.

He needs behavioral therapy probably. What has been the diagnosis made by psychiatrist? ADHD or ASD. The treatment plan gets according to diagnosis, but behavioral therapy should be started at the earliest.

My son has suffer from a fever from 18th July to till now. My son is 4 year old. His body temperature is between 100-103 celsius. But we consult with our family Dr. On 19th July morning. He has given some medicine 1. P250; 2. Chloroquine phosphate suspension 3.vomikind.but not improve till now, what shall I do now at first ? Dear Dr.

FIAP(NEONATE), MD - Paediatrics
Pediatrician, Ahmedabad
Chloroquine is specific for malaria so unless yoyears child is suffering from malaria it will not help. Your child might be having a simple viral infection which usually responds to paracetamol that you are giving to your child. However it is difficult to say for sure without seeing the patient. So if your son does not respond or develops new symptoms or has persistent vomitting and not taking orally well I suggest to consult a paediatrician. Warm regards

Recently born baby (4 days back) is not feeding properly, Kindly suggest what to do?
Every 2-3 hourly feeds are must for a newborn baby to avoid significant weight loss-->. Meet your pediatrician asap and ofcourse you have to do check weight of your baby every 3 days. Sometimes infection or jaundice are the common cause of lethargy.

Typically children can have variable bowel habits. Not going for potty upto seven days is normal. Check if she has hard stools because of which she may have a fissure. This makes it painful for the child to pass stools and the child avoids going to the toilet and the vicious cycle continues. See if there is bleeding too which would suggest she has a fissure. Solution: give her plenty of water to drink and feed her bananas. That should help. Otherwise you will have to start her on stool softeners.

Definitely she can have tomatoes in curry, give ORS (WHO formula) instead of fruit juice, you can give raw fruits. Raw fruits have fibres which helps to hold water in intestine, so improves the consistency of motions and decrease frequency. She can have all natural foods.

Her weight is fine for her age. But most important thing is that she should regularly gain weight as per expected. This you can get vaccination card where you will find a growth chart. You can plot her weight against her age at regular intervals like say 1 to 3 monthly and see whether she is gaining weight normally or not.
