Tooth Sensitivity - 4 Ways You Can Prevent it

Tooth sensitivity can be best described with the symptom of a sharp pain that you feel in your teeth when you sip something hot or cold. It is this contact of the drink with the sensitive tooth that causes the sharp pain. Extremely cold climate and eating something which is sweet or sour can cause the sensitive teeth to cause such a sensation, thus making it uncomfortable for you to eat anything.

The most common causes of sensitive teeth are as follows:
1. Tooth decay near the gum line can cause the teeth to be sensitive
2. Consumption of highly acidic foods and beverages
3. Using a hard tooth brush and aggressive brushing can lead to erosion of tooth enamel and cause tooth sensitivity
4. Plague buildup and gum diseases cause tooth sensitivity which may require you to consult your dentist immediately

However, there are many precautions that dentists recommend which can prevent your tooth from becoming sensitive. These are:
1. Gently brush your teeth and use a tooth brush that has soft bristles. This can prevent any damage to the enamel.
2. Apply proper technique to clean all parts of your mouth and teeth. You should also rinse your mouth properly with antiseptic mouthwash and fluoride.
3. You should eat a well-balanced diet which is low in acidic content. Soft drinks and cold drinks should be avoided as they can damage the enamel on your teeth.
4. Using desensitizing toothpaste can help reduce the pain associated with sensitivity.

Hyper sensitive tooth needs proper treatment and you should immediately consult your dentist. There are many dental procedures ranging from simple to complex ones, aimed towards controlling pain and sensitivity. Root canal and application of fluoride to the sensitive areas of your teeth can help reduce pain. Root canal is a treatment at the tooth’s soft core and is considered the most successful treatment to eliminate the pain associated with infected tooth without the need to remove it.

Always use soft bristles toothbrush and teeth brushing should be done 2 to 3 minutes

Always use soft bristles toothbrush and teeth brushing should be done 2 to 3 minutes. Because hard toothbrush and lengthy cleaning time cause the abrasion of teeth which can make your teeth sensitive.
Clean your front teeth in a vertical motion and back teeth in circular motion.
Always clean your tongue with tongue cleaner.
Never use needle, match stick, wooden stick etc to remove food in between teeth because these things can cause gums inflammation resulting in pocket formation.
Have a good smile.

Few months after I underwent an RCT on my molar (without capping) I can feel a recurring pain (like the one you feel on a sensitive tooth. It's definitely not sensitivity and there is no pain while eating. Has my tooth gotten reinfected?

Any kind of infection has certain signs and symptoms like pain, swelling, inflammation, associated fever etc. Without looking into that tooth both externally as well as internally (radiograph) it is impossible to guess exactly what it is. Still, you can take precautions not to breack the tooth/fillings until you visit your dentist, if RCT is fine, simply putting a cap over concerned tooth may solve your problem.

You may have gingivitis. Get scaling done for plaque removal. Rinse your mouth with chlorhexidine mouth wash. Brush twice daily.

What are the remedies for tooth decay? How we can prevent it? Whether there is any home ingredient to avoid it?

What are the remedies for tooth decay? How we can prevent it? Whether there is any home ingredient to avoid it?
We need more investigations with clinical examination to decide upon treatment. You may need cleaning and artificial enamel filling or root canal treatment. Advance procedures can be done with laser. Dental tips: - visit a dentist every six months for cleaning and a thorough dental check-up. Limit sugary food to avoid tooth decay. Gargle your mouth thoroughly after every meal. Scrub gently to clean your tongue with a tongue cleaner. Floss all your teeth inter dentally & brush twice daily, morning & night, up & down short vertical strokes, with ultra-soft bristles, indicator brush. Tooth brush to be changed every 2 months.

Sir I am sanjay Kumar Sharma Sir my mouth is very smelling
My teeth problem
And My chicks swelling
Pleases suggest me...
Hello lybrate-user. 1 Reason :Smell from mouth may be because of food accumulation on teeth if not get clean properly than it becomes a hard substance and this process continues ang gums get swell. Only toothpaste will not help it. To maintain health of teeth and gums you need cleaning of your teeth by your Dentist. And you can use any toothpaste. Like colgate pepsodent meswak. But after cleaning your dentist can advice you about another toothpaste as your teeth condition. 2 Reason: if any caries in the teeth or crowding of teeth can be cause of mouth smell.

My mother has been suffering from an oral problem for last 4 months. She has inner cheek of grey color only between the lining of lower and upper jaws. She is 55 years old and has no any addictions. She doesn't has any pain, lump or other problems now. But she feels problems during spicy food and hot food. I am worried about her grey patch and sensation towards spicy foods. Please guide me. She feels slightly rough tough in right edge only.

1.Without seeing clinically, I can say these grey lines are generally due to cheek bite. Nothing much to worry about. There are many reason for cheek bite, like stress, anxiety, any sharp point on the teeth near cheek bite area. Generally, a night guard is prescribed, which a patient have to wear during sleep. Cheek bite alone is a common problem. But get it checked thoroughly from local dentist. 2. Problem from spicy food, is a point which we will consider. Here we have to ask some few question, since how long she is having this problem and in which area. Its only from few days or from many weeks/months. A thorough examination is required for that. And medicine may be required. 3. Hot sensitivity is generally due to carious tooth. She might be having cavity in her tooth and need treatment like root canal treatment (rct). Conclusion: Get a thorough examination done from local dentist. For time being start SM fibro capsule, two times a day for minimum 2 weeks for burning sensation and do brushing with vantej tooth paste, two times a day for minimum 3 month. All the best!

Hi I have a burning sensation in my mouth when I eat something or chilli. So sir or mam can you tell me what is my problem?

BDS, MDS
Dentist, Gorakhpur
Since duration of your problem is not mentioned, I would suggest to take vitamin B12 supplement, zincovit capsule together. Try to avoid hot and spicy food stuffs for the time being. If problem still persists for longer than one or two months it indicates some other underlying problem. You have to visit an expert dentist regarding the same.

My teeth cap got out all of sudden. I want to refix them. Please reply with the price for doing this.
Dear lybrate-user, if the cap has been placed in the last 1 year, you can readily go to the dentist who placed it and get it fixed for free. However, if it has been more than a year, your dentist may charge you, depending upon his own discretion. Although this is usually the standard policy, many dentists may follow their own rules for charging patients in such cases, so it really depends on your dentist.
