Psoriasis in Children

MBBS, DDV
Dermatologist, Mumbai
Psoriasis in Children

Psoriasis is a chronic skin condition that occurs in children and adults. The typical appearance is of red, thickened, scaly patches on the skin (plaques). These plaques can vary in size and distribution from person to person. In some people it may affect small areas of skin while others may have large areas covering their body.

What kinds of psoriasis occur in children?

Each of the patterns of psoriasis described in adults can be seen in children. These include:

  • Flexural psoriasis (red areas between skin folds)
  • Scalp psoriasis (thick scales found on areas of the scalp)
  • Nail psoriasis (nail dystrophy related to psoriasis)
  • Acute guttate psoriasis (small red plaques occurring after an infection)
  • Chronic plaque psoriasis (red plaques with scaling occurring anywhere on the body)
  • Erythrodermic psoriasis (severe reddening covering most or all of the body)
  • Pustular psoriasis (severe pustules that arise acutely)
  • Photosensitive psoriasis (affecting areas of sun exposure)
  • Guttate, facial and flexural psoriasis are particularly common in children.

What causes psoriasis?

  • Psoriasis has a strong genetic component and is due to abnormal processes involved in regulation of the immune system.
  • Individuals may have flares in psoriasis in response to stress, injury, medications and infections (particularly streptococcal tonsillitis).
  • Psoriasis is not contagious, therefore, affected children do not need to be isolated from other children.

How is the diagnosis made?

  • The diagnosis of psoriasis is usually made clinically. This involves a doctor examining the skin and making the diagnosis based on the appearance of the affected areas.
  • The plaques tend to be distributed symmetrically.
  • They favour certain sites such as scalp, elbows and knees; or; skin folds such as behind ears, armpits and groin.
  • They are well circumscribed, red and scaly.
  • There is often a family history of psoriasis.
  • Occasionally, a skin biopsy may be necessary to distinguish psoriasis from other skin conditions that may appear similar.

Candid would not work in toe infection .u need gram positive bugs protection not fungus. So use fusidin cream to apply rush to some good surgeon who can do daily dressing and cleaning of infection or pus.

How to stop the hair fall? It's not frequent. Sometimes it happens. Suggest me some good hair oils and shampoo.
Deep condition every alternate week. Use a deep conditioner that contains protein at least twice a month to strengthen hair. Hot oil treatment with olive oil to intensely moisten the hair follicles is also very effective to stop hair fall.

Hair Transplant - Is It a Painful Procedure?

Hair Transplant - Is It a Painful Procedure?

Hair loss may not be a life threatening condition, but it can have a negative affect on a person’s self-image. For this reason, it is a good idea to explore hair transplant procedures for bald spots and thinning hair. This procedure involves harvesting hair follicles from one part of the scalp and transplanting them to another.

It can be performed either through follicular unit extraction or through follicular unit transplant procedures. The difference between the two lies in how the hair follicles are harvested. Follicular unit extraction is performed by harvesting individual hair follicles from various parts of the scalp while in a follicular unit transplant procedure, a strip of tissue with hair follicles is removed from the scalp and then divided into grafts.
When it comes to any procedure, “how much will it hurt?” Is the first question many people ask. Let’s take a look at the pain associated with this procedure.

The surgery is usually performed under local anesthesia and hence, most people do not feel anything during the procedure itself. However, in some cases, if the anesthesia begins to wear out in the middle of the procedure, it can be quite painful. Being put under local anesthesia involves injecting an anesthetic solution into the scalp to numb it. This can involve quite a few injections and can be a bit painful. The anesthetic’s expertise plays an important role in determining the amount of pain this generates.

The next thing you should know is that this procedure is a long procedure and a session can last anywhere between 6 to 8 hours. During this time, you need to sit upright with minimal movement. Though this is not painful, it can get uncomfortable. Your muscles may also protest at being in the same position for hours and get stiff.

After the procedure, your scalp may feel tender and there may be slight inflammation for a few days. Pain at this stage is generally minimal but most doctors prescribe painkillers to make the patient’s recovery more comfortable.

When it comes to pain, it is important to note that each individual has a different pain threshold. What seems mild to one person may be very painful to another. Hence, do not let yourself be too influenced by other people’s experience. Even if the procedure is a little uncomfortable, it’s effect on your self-confidence will make it well worth the effort. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can ask a free question.

Hello, Apply Homoeopathic medicine – Thiosinaminum Q few drops mixed in a glycerin solution on scars that are visible (as it is less greasy, so is more easily absorbed into the skin). Also take Causticum 200 orally twice daily for 4weeks.

Hello, You can improve your dry skin by good along with a healthy intake of food which should includes vitamin A, C, E and protein, lots of water, application of good sunscreen before going out. Choose mild soaps that have added oils and fats. Avoid deodorant and antibacterial soaps, which are especially harsh on dry skin. After washing or bathing, gently pat or blot your skin dry with a towel so that some moisture remains on the skin (never ever rub the area). Apply the moisturizer or lubricating cream while your skin is still wet or moist from bathing. Petroleum jelly is a good choice. Cover the treated areas with plastic wrap to keep the petroleum jelly from staining clothes and furniture. Use a portable home humidifier or one attached to your furnace to add moisture to the air inside your home. Medication: Take homoeopathic medicines – Schwabe's Alfaalfa Tonic and Petroleum 200/ twice daily, take them for 1 month. Use Schwabe's Skin care bathing bar, Calendula & Aloe Vera all purpose cream, Bakson's Body oil to be applied.
