What are the signs and causes of hair loss in children

What are the signs and causes of hair loss in children

Excessive hair fall, thinning of hair and bald spots are not only concerns of adults, children too suffer from hair woes. Look for signs and identify causes that are leading to your child's hair loss. With proper treatment hair loss can be reversed and your child's hair can be restored.

Symptoms

Look for these signs to determine whether your child is suffering from hair loss.

  • Bald patches on the head.
  • Loss of hair from the entire body
  • Excessive hair loss but not complete fallout
  • Spots of broken hair and scattered hair loss

Causes

  • Alopecia areata - This condition results in oval patches of hair fallout from certain portions of the head. It is a noncontiguous condition that appears when the body's immunization attacks the hair follicles. About 25% of affected kids also suffer from ridging nails.
  • Tinea capitis - Also known as ringworms of the scalp, this is a type of fungal infections that are often seen in children. It causes oval shaped scaly spots on the head due to breakage of hair and the remaining roots seem like black spots.
  • Telogen effluvium - If your child has undergone some kind of trauma, be it physical or psychological, it can cause the hair follicles to enter into the resting phase and within 6 to 16 weeks excessive hair loss occurs leaving your child partially bald.
  • Trichotillomania - Stress or anxiety can cause your child to pull out his/her own hair. This results in scattered hair loss and broken hair which is prominent on the sides of the head.
  • Lack of nutrients - Nutritional deficiency can cause hair loss if your child lacks vitamin A, B complex and biotin it can trigger hair fall.

Hair fall in children is common and treatable if they are of medical causes. Sometimes rubbing and playing with hair can also cause hair loss so parents are advised to look into all the probable causes that might lead to shedding.

Hi lybtrate user, a newborn baby can pass stool for 10 to 15 times a day or sometimes it will not pass stool for altogether 5-6 days, both the conditions are normal, so don't worry about it. This happens because babies are on only milk diet. As far as gases are concerned burping after every feed will be very useful.

Stomach Ache in Kids - 7 Causes Behind It!

MD - Paediatrics, DNB (Pediatrics)
Pediatrician, Rourkela
Stomach Ache in Kids - 7 Causes Behind It!

Stomach aches or abdominal pains are one of the most frequently reported health complaints faced by children. Children below the age of twelve are known to suffer from recurrent stomach pain. While pains such as these lead to momentary discomfiture, they also lay the path for graver worries if neglected for too long. Your child may feel sick and bunk school for two days; rest and home care can restore his or her health, but that in no way, is the best suited way of dealing with the situation. If tummy aches resurface over a certain period of time, parents should be cautious enough to look for the root cause and should try to eliminate it accordingly.

Widely noticed causes of stomach aches in children:

  1. Unhygienic food can affect the child’s digestive system.
  2. Intolerance to a certain food item should not be overlooked.
  3. Perpetual anxiety can make the tummy twist and turn.
  4. Urinary Tract Infections can also lead to acute abdominal pain.
  5. Serious factors such as gallstones or appendicitis could also be present. Immediate expert consultation is advised in such a case.
  6. Caffeine and packaged soft drinks can be harmful.
  7. Butter, ghee and other greasy products can trigger tummy aches.

Ways to treat tummy aches in children:

  1. Keep children away from gas producing food items: Food that is hard to digest should be avoided. Don’t let your child have too many nuts regularly.
  2. Keep them hydrated: Fluid intake should be monitored. A child should drink at least six to seven glasses of water per day. Fruit juices or soups can also be given to them alongside main meals. This helps digestion.
  3. Do not stack up food in one go: Eating a lot in one meal is a bad way of satisfying hunger. Have smaller meals in more numbers. Six to eight meals will keep your child full and will also eliminate chances of acid reflux which happens either due to an empty stomach or too much piling up of greasy food.
  4. Timely check - up with the doctor: If tummy aches refuse to go away, take your child to a doctor for a thorough check- up. Administer medicines as prescribed by the physician.
  5. Regular deworming every 6 month ensures a good appetite and well-being.

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a brain disorder marked by an ongoing pattern of inattention and/or hyperactivity-impulsivity that interferes with functioning or development. Here’s how to help yourself overcome sleeping problems: •Buy an egg timer. Using a tangible instrument like an egg timer helps keep your family on track with bedtime schedules. •Commit to a set schedule. Make sure that you go to bed at the same time every night and wake up at the same time every morning, including weekends. Staying up later on weekend nights and wake up later the next morning just makes your weekdays more difficult. If you are fighting fatigue despite the set schedule, you might need to increase your sleep time. Remember that younger children do need more sleep than older children. •Remove sources of stimulation. During the hour you get ready for bed, turn off the TV, music, computers, and video games. Don’t engage in arguments or initiate any rough play. This is an hour that should be very peaceful, That means that parents also need to be peaceful — no arguing with each other or the children. •Use a reward system. Give yourself stars, or stickers that can be traded in the next morning for a small reward. These rewards come when expected actions, like brushing teeth, are completed on time. Rewards may also be earned by staying in bed after lights-out. •Keep the house quiet. During the bedtime preparation and once you are in bed, keep the house quiet and calm. It’s a good idea to keep your voices down and turn down TV and music. •Return calmly to bed. Even with a reward system and a cozy bed, you might still want to get up. Return to bed without indulging in talking, arguing, threatening , or any other energizing activity. •Allow a full hour to get ready for bed. Once you have your egg timer, you can use it to count down the hour you need to wind down. Here’s how to break down the hour: oFirst 30 minutes: Set the egg timer for 30 minutes. This period of time is for hygiene — bathing, brushing teeth, and putting on pajamas. ONext 15 minutes: Set the egg timer for 15 minutes. This period of time is for a relaxing activity, such as reading a book, doing some relaxation exercises, or practicing deep breathing. OFinal 15 minutes: Set the timer for 15 minutes. This is for getting into bed (and staying there). In bed, there should be some sort of ritual between the parent and the child. Consider reading a favorite book, snuggling, praying, identifying good things that happened that day, telling a favorite story, or some other soothing and affectionate activity. Lights go out at the last “ding.” •Wake up gently. You need a good plan for waking The “bugle call” approach can actually set you up for a day-long spiral of ill temper. Instead, try a gentle action, such as opening the blinds or listening to a calm music and getting up. •Build in getting-ready time. You may need a morning schedule that is just as generous in time and structure as their pre-bed ritual. A chaotic rush to get out the door sets the wrong tone for the day. •Limit Caffeine and stimulants late in the day and Be Active. Caffeine and other stimulants consumed too close to bed time will keep you tossing and turning all night. The same goes for taking stimulant prescription medications too late in the day. •Exercise. Not only is exercise beneficial for your overall health, but it plays a very big role in helping you sleep and feel better. However, it is not recommended to workout or engage in any major exercise too close to bed either. It can actually have the opposite effect in helping you achieve the rest you desire. Try and get regular exercise during the day or very early evening to avoid being wired at night. Regards,

Dear Doctor, My daughter does not like to eat anything. I have tried baby foods, I have tried home made foods like rice with dal and vegetables etc. But she hates em all. What should I do? Parents must understand that, every child has mind of it's own. Forcing to eat against their wish is not going to work. It will create some rebellious behavior. Instead eat family meals together and share happy moments. During meals offer her all you want, but let her decide what to eat. And after some days you will see the results. Check your expectations, if they are hyper..
