My son 9 months old he suffers atopic eczema problem, sybol or boronil is can use to safe way or not please say doctor.
Hello. Good evening. It is better not to use any powder to the body. Initial treatment consists of use of emollients (cold creams). Better not to keep the body dry. If this does not help then further treatment measures become necessary.

Dear Doctor,                       I am the mother of baby girl of one and half month.. We came to know that she is having one hole of 0.53 cm perimembranous and one more hole of 0.29 cm ASD at her age of 25 days.                       Our paediatrician suggested no treatment at this time and she will be kept under observation for 2 years and echocardiography for every 6 months once.  Mostly holes may close by their own.                      Now she is of 3.7kg. Feeding is in normal way and she is active also.            But we are really worried about this condition.  Whether her condition is very severe?  Whether holes close by their own?

This is a common problem in newborn babies, generally all babies have holes before birth which close either at the time of birth or few hours after birth. This is a physiological phenomenon. In some babies this phenomenon gets delayed for may be few days and months. As per your paediatrician its correct to wait and watch, I hope its not a major issue, if it was a major issue your baby would have breathing problems at birth or later. Since baby is doing well you need not worry! just get repeat echo done as per your doctors order. No need to panic!

Keep trying mothers milk whenever baby cries (demand feed. When ever baby is hungry give breast feeds, slowly they will get used to breast milk. If mother is having sufficient milk there won't be any problem for the baby to take. Keep trying with a positive attitude.

My son is a adhd kid. He has some speech delay also. What is the best way to treat him. Are there any special schools for him.

C.S.C, D.C.H, M.B.B.S
General Physician,
Stimulants such as methylphenidate and amphetamines are the most common type of medication used for treating adhd. Although it may seem counterintuitive to treat hyperactivity with a stimulant, these medications actually activate brain circuits that support attention and focused behavior, thus reducing hyperactivity. In addition, a few non-stimulant medications, such as atomoxetine, guanfacine, and clonidine, are also available. For many children, adhd medications reduce hyperactivity and impulsivity and improve their ability to focus, work, and learn. Medications also may improve physical coordination. However, a one-size-fits-all approach does not apply for all children with adhd. What works for one child might not work for another. One child might have side effects with a certain medication, while another child may not. Sometimes several different medications or dosages must be tried before finding one that works for a particular child. Any child taking medications must be monitored closely and carefully by caregivers and doctors. Stimulant medications come in different forms, such as a pill, capsule, liquid, or skin patch. Some medications also come in short-acting, long-acting, or extended release varieties. In each of these varieties, the active ingredient is the same, but it is released differently in the body. Long-acting or extended release forms often allow a child to take the medication just once a day before school, so he or she doesn't have to make a daily trip to the school nurse for another dose. Parents and doctors should decide together which medication is best for the child and whether the child needs medication only for school hours or for evenings and weekends, too. For more information about stimulants and other medications used for treating mental disorders, see the nimh mental health medications webpage. The food and drug administration (fda) website has the latest information on medication approvals, warnings, and patient information guides. What are the side effects of stimulant medications? the most commonly reported side effects are decreased appetite, sleep problems, anxiety, and irritability. Some children also report mild stomachaches or headaches. Most side effects are minor and disappear over time or if the dosage level is lowered. Decreased appetite. Be sure your child eats healthy meals. If this side effect does not go away, talk to your child's doctor. Also talk to the doctor if you have concerns about your child's growth or weight gain while he or she is taking this medication. Sleep problems. If a child cannot fall asleep, the doctor may prescribe a lower dose of the medication or a shorter-acting form. The doctor might also suggest giving the medication earlier in the day, or stopping the afternoon or evening dose. Adding a prescription for a low dose of a blood pressure medication called clonidine sometimes helps with sleep problems. A consistent sleep routine that includes relaxing elements like warm milk, soft music, or quiet activities in dim light, may also help. Less common side effects. A few children develop sudden, repetitive movements or sounds called tics. Changing the medication dosage may make tics go away. Some children also may have a personality change, such as appearing" flat" or without emotion. Talk with your child's doctor if you see any of these side effects. You can ask for special schools in your area.

General Physician,
One or two glasses of milk is enough. Even if he is not taking it, there is no problem as he is eating roti and other food. You can try adding boost or horlicks and see if he likes to drink milk.

Iron Deficiency In Children

MBBS, MD - Paediatrics
Pediatrician, Varanasi
Iron Deficiency In Children

Iron is an essential nutrient and mineral that is required by adults and children alike. Iron helps move oxygen from the lungs to the rest of the body and helps muscles store and use oxygen. It is especially important for children because it aids development and prevents anaemia. Untreated iron deficiency in children can cause physical and mental delays. It can lead to less healthy red blood cells in the child's blood stream which will cause a delay in the growth of physical and mental faculties.

Risk factors for iron deficiency in children

Infants and children at highest risk of iron deficiency include:

  1. Babies who are born prematurely or have a low birth weight
  2. Babies who drink cow's milk before age 1
  3. Breast-fed babies who aren't given complementary foods containing iron after age 6 months
  4. Babies who drink formula that isn't fortified with iron
  5. Children ages 1 to 5 who drink more than 24 ounces (710 milliliters) of cow's milk, goat's milk or soy milk a day
  6. Children who have certain health conditions, such as chronic infections or restricted diets
  7. Children ages 1 to 5 who have been exposed to lead
  8. Adolescent girls also are at higher risk of iron deficiency because their bodies lose iron during menstruation.

Symptoms of iron deficiency anaemia

The signs and symptoms of iron deficiency anaemia in children may include:

  1. Pale skin
  2. Fatigue or weakness
  3. Slow cognitive and social development
  4. Inflammation of the tongue
  5. Difficulty maintaining body temperature
  6. Increased likelihood of infections
  7. Unusual cravings for non-nutritive substances, such as ice, dirt or pure starch

Prevent iron deficiency in children

Take steps to prevent iron deficiency in your child by paying attention to his or her diet. For example:

  1. Breast-feed or use iron-fortified formula. Breast-feeding until your child is age 1 is recommended. If you don't breast-feed, use iron-fortified infant formula.
  2. Encourage a balanced diet. When you begin serving your baby solids, typically between ages 4 months and 6 months, feed him or her foods with added iron, such as iron-fortified baby cereal. For older children, good sources of iron include red meat, chicken, fish, beans and dark green leafy vegetables. Between ages 1 and 5, don't allow your child to drink more than 24 ounces (710 milliliters) of milk a day.
  3. Enhance absorption. Vitamin C helps promote the absorption of dietary iron. You can help your child absorb iron by offering foods rich in vitamin C, such as melon, strawberries, kiwi, broccoli, tomatoes and potatoes.
  4. Consider iron supplements. If your baby was born prematurely or with a low birth weight or you're breast-feeding a baby older than 4 months and he or she isn't eating two or more servings a day of iron-rich foods, talk to a child's doctor about oral iron supplements.

Make sure that you watch out for the tell tale signs of iron deficiency and take the necessary precautions to avoid the same. If you wish to discuss about any specific child related problem, you can consult a specilized pediatrician and ask a free question.

Each child has its own sleep pattern and no two children are alike. Most of them never get sleep deprived and manage very well to get whatever sleep is required. I would not worry about his not sleeping in the day. They always compensate and get enough sleep unlike us adults who fight sleep because of work or studies and become sleep lagged.

Yes some tiny holes do close on its own as the baby grows but you have to be extra careful in observation of blue color on exertion like crying, not getting infections, getting vaccinations on time (this has to be observed for every new born baby up to a year- 1st summer/winter & autum is difficult for every baby) good luck and take care.

My son is handicapped and mentally underdeveloped and on wheel chair. He is now 18+. At the age of six months he has uncontrolled seizures and still on anti convultions. He has chest congestions repeatedly. Also his capacity to control urine is decreasing. He has repeated UTI and URI also. How we can permanentally control this. We nebulize him occasionally with duolin and budecort 1 mg. Thanks.

MD PULMONARY, DTCD
Pulmonologist, Faridabad
It very tough. Get him vaccinated. Try to boost his immunity by nutritious food. As he is getting repeated infection ,get his IGA,IGG.IGM assessed. Nebulize with duolin only if not asthmatic as budecort will increase chances of pneumonia.
