Thyroid Nodules: Tests And Diagnosis

Thyroid Nodules: Tests And Diagnosis

In assessing a lump or nodule in your neck, one of your doctor's main goals is to rule out the possibility of cancer. But your doctor will also want to know if your thyroid is functioning properly. Tests include:
 • Physical exam. You'll likely be asked to swallow while your doctor examines your thyroid because a nodule in the thyroid gland will usually move up and down during swallowing, whereas a nodule that forms in other parts of your neck won't.
 • Thyroid function tests. Tests that measure blood levels of thyroxine and triiodothyronine, hormones produced by your thyroid gland, and thyroid-stimulating hormone (tsh), which is released by your pituitary gland, can indicate whether your thyroid is producing too much thyroxine (hyperthyroidism) or too little (hypothyroidism).
 • Ultrasonography. This imaging technique uses high-frequency sound waves rather than radiation to produce images. It provides the best information about the shape and structure of nodules and may be used to distinguish cysts from solid nodules, to determine if multiple nodules are present and as a guide in performing a fine-needle aspiration biopsy.
 • Fine-needle aspiration (fna) biopsy. Nodules are often biopsied to make sure no cancer is present. Fna biopsy helps to distinguish between benign and malignant thyroid nodules. During the procedure, your doctor inserts a very thin needle in the nodule and removes a sample of cells. The procedure, which is carried out in your doctor's office, takes about 20 minutes and has few risks. Your doctor is likely to take several samples from a single nodule. If you have more than one nodule, your doctor will usually take samples from these as well. Often, your doctor will use ultrasound to help guide the placement of the needle. The samples are then sent to a laboratory and analyzed under a microscope.

Thyroid scan: In some cases, your doctor may recommend a thyroid scan to help evaluate thyroid nodules. During this test, an isotope of radioactive iodine is injected into a vein in your arm. You then lie on a table while a special camera produces an image of your thyroid on a computer screen.

Nodules that produce excess thyroid hormone — called hot nodules — show up on the scan because they take up more of the isotope than normal thyroid tissue does. Cold nodules are nonfunctioning and appear as defects or holes in the scan. Hot nodules are almost always noncancerous, but a few cold nodules are cancerous. The disadvantage of a thyroid scan is that it can't distinguish between benign and malignant cold nodules.

The length of a thyroid scan varies, depending on how long it takes the isotope to reach your thyroid gland. You may have some neck discomfort because your neck is stretched back during the scan, and you'll be exposed to a small amount of radiation.

Hello Pl note While high blood pressure in itself can lead to sexual dysfunction, studies show that many of the drugs used to treat this condition also can cause sexual difficulties. In men, the decreased blood flow can reduce desire and interfere with erections and ejaculation. In women, it can lead to vaginal dryness, a decrease in desire, and difficulties achieving orgasm. Three types of blood-pressure medications — diuretics (or “water pills”), beta-blockers and alpha-blockers — have been found to have the highest incidence of sexual side effects. Some diuretics, for example, not only interfere with blood flow to the sex organs but increase the body’s excretion of zinc, which is needed to produce testosterone. And beta-blockers can sabotage a satisfying sex life at least three ways — by making you feel sedated and depressed, by interfering with nerve impulses associated with arousal and by reducing testosterone levels. Options: Talk with your doctor or other health care provider about switching to another type of blood pressure medication. Stay healthy.

How are - calories, cholesterol, sugar, fat - Diabetes, BP, overweight connected. Kindly explain in a layman's language.
Hello, Thanks for the query. Your question has too many sub questions. The answer is not easy. I will try. Our main food is carbohydrate like (rice, roti, chapati, potato, banana, sweet potato, corn, rag, other millets like bajra) all contain mainly starch. This is converted to glucose in the intestine after digestion. Secondly proteins (in pulses, soya beans and eggs, non vegetarian foods) plus fats (oils, ghee, butter etc) are called as energy giving foods. Because 1 gram of carbohydrate when chemically burnt in the body gives 4 kilo calories, 1 g of protein gives 4.1 k calories and fat gives 9 k cals. So when we take food we get calories based on the quantity that we take. Plus our body needs energy for every activity that goes on likre respiration, heart function, digestion, kidney functions, liver functioning etc. Plus if we exercise then we need more energy. If we eat moderate quantity, then our intake meets our energy needs properly. But if we eat more, particularly more of fat and carbs, we are likely to increase weight as the calories are extra and get stored as fat. Diabetes occus due to either deficiency of insulin a hormone from pancreas (Beta cells of Langerhans) or there is resistance to its action due to excess fat in the body (being over weight) and some times both (resistance and lack of insulin). Apart from over weight inactivity is another major cause for developing diabetes. Blood pressuer tends to increase in a person who is over weight and is inactive plus takes more salt in the diet. Cholesterol is linked with excess fat intake. It can be bad for heart. Thanks.

Please follow the below recommendation for your condition: Diet, exercise, and behavioral modification should be included in all obesity management approaches for body mass index (BMI) of 25 kg/m 2 or higher. Other tools, such as pharmacotherapy for BMI of 27 kg/m 2 or higher with comorbidity or BMI over 30 kg/m2 and bariatric surgery for BMI of 35 kg/m2 with comorbidity or BMI over 40 kg/m 2, should be used as adjuncts to behavioral modification to reduce food intake and increase physical activity when this is possible. Many obese people are advised to follow a juice diet or the juice fast for a period of a week or so, so that they can shed the excess extra pounds faster. Health and nutrition experts advise people to consume fresh fruit or vegetable juice for obesity. Secondly you should get your full body check-up once in a year.

Dear user. FERTILE PHASE is the phase of a female's menstrual cycle when an egg (ovule) is released from the ovaries. In humans, ovulation occurs about midway through the menstrual cycle, after the follicular phase. The few days surrounding ovulation (from approximately days 10 to 18 of a 28 day cycle), constitute the most fertile phase. So if you have ejaculatory sexual inter course from day 10 from the first day of period and to day 20, the chances of pregnancy are much more. There are many determinants of pregnancy. You should be sexually matured. Your partner should be sexually matured. The period of your partner should be in the fertile stage. Her egg and your sperm cells should healthy enough. Then her uterus should be capable to get conceived. If all these were satisfied, the pregnancy could be a result. Take care.

Stop masturbation. The average time from vaginal penetration to ejaculation in the average man is 9 minutes. The definition of premature ejaculation is reaching orgasm within 1 minute or less after vaginal penetration (intercourse), or ejaculation that occurs too early for female partner satisfaction. This problem is common, occurring in 30% of adult men, and it is the most common form of male sexual dysfunction. It can be caused by erectile dysfunction, anxiety and nerve hypersensitivity and is, in general, quite treatable by homoepathic treatment. You can click on consult option for homoepathic treatment without side effects.

And my hairs are also very thin.
What should I do?
Body colour is fairer than face for almost all. That is the normal. Your face is exposed to sunlight due to which it gets tanned. Use a good sunscreen.
