My 10 year old son has asthma. He used asthma preventer. What is the effect of using asthma preventer long term? I heard that using this for year might cause bone shrinkage. Is it true? Are there any supplement or vitamin to help this vision?

Diploma in Child Health (DCH), MBBS
Pediatrician, Kurukshetra
Asthma preventers may slightly affect bone growth but the benefits are many. May use vit a for eyes. Give her multivitamins.

If your child is able to sit up without support that means all is well else your child requires thorough evaluation like hormonal and nutritional abnormality.

Consequences of Unreplaced Missing Teeth

BDS, MDS - Orthodontics
Dentist, Gurgaon
Consequences of Unreplaced Missing Teeth

Our teeth are most definitely, vital for our living. Our everyday choices, pertaining to our lifestyle would call for changes, adjustments and lots of sacrifices without them. Though, a number of replacement options are available for the people with missing teeth, the most recommended are dental implants. Ask why?

They are simply the ideal solution due to their look and feel, which is similar to the natural teeth.

What happens if replacement is not considered?
To prevent the nasty repercussions from occurring, it is necessary that any missing teeth are replaced in time. Though, the symptoms of problems due to missing teeth only appear to be superficial in the early stages, the long term effects may certainly prove to be quite severe.

Some of the short term consequences of missing teeth are as follows:

  1. People with missing teeth tend to feel self-conscious or even embarrassed at times, while they talk to others or smile.
  2. Problem in speech is a common issue that may arise due to tooth loss.
  3. When teeth are missing, people find it difficult to consume some certain food types. These may include ones which contain some essential nutrients, hence leading to possible malnutrition.
  4. Increased wear or stress can also lead to the weakening of the teeth that are remaining.
  5. People with tooth loss find it difficult to chew the food properly.
  6. When teeth are missing, there is movement of the teeth that remain, to compensate for the gap places created. This leads to ugly looking gap teeth.

Though, these were the short term issues, the major consequence of not getting any lost teeth replaced is the gradual bone loss. Our teeth are firmly embedded in the jaw bone. Chewing and biting are the constant uses, which are required by the jaw bone to remain hale and hearty as well as active. You may believe it or not, be it at the beginning or at the end; the major focus is not on the teeth, but on the bones.

Maintaining form as well as density of the bone requires regular stimulation, coming from the teeth, as mentioned above. The contact with teeth causes small stresses, which the periodontal ligament transmits to the bone and prompts its continual rebuilding as well as remodelling. When any missing teeth are not replaced, it leads to the gradual deterioration in the jaw bones, over time. This not only results in facial shape changes but also will eventually burn a huge hole in your pockets, as increased complications will also lead to increased costs required for rectifying the problems.

So, now it's up to you. Choose healthy and wise. Go for teeth replacement at the earliest, if and when, need arises.

Hi, my question is to a child/new born specialist. Recently I hv been blessed with a baby girl 4 days back. I would want to know which external feed /milk is best for my baby (cow's milk, buffalo's milk or packed milk powder). Please help me on this because mother's feed is not available in adequate amount to nourish baby at this point of time.

MD - Paediatrics, MBBS
Pediatrician, Tumkur
Any milk other than breastmilk is not safe for a newborn baby. If mother consumes adequate fluids & food there will be enough milk secretion. If at all you want to give other milk nan 1 can be given.

Dietitian/Nutritionist, Chandigarh
Hi lybrate-user to reduce belly fat you need to be particular about food choices & timings. Eat small & frequent meals. Include high fiber foods in your diet such as whole cereals & whole pulses. Drink plenty of water. Avoid refined foods from your diet such as maida, pasta. Keep check on your food intake.

My child is 2years n she does not eat properly. What should I give her to increase her appetite? She has stopped eating cerelac also.

Diploma in Child Health (DCH), F.I.A.M.S. (Pediatrics)
Pediatrician, Muzaffarnagar
You have not mentioned wt n ht of your daughter in your query though these have been mentioned on top which are not consistent to each other. Cerelac is not proper diet for 2 years old child. She needs all home made nutritious food stuff of her choice rather thrusting your choice on her, it appears so. Leave her free to choose her items. Avoid sugar rich drinks, toffee, chocolates etc. Her choice is best appetizer.

Hello, my 1 year old baby is going to pooh 7-8 times a day, doctor prescribed Colistop-DS tonic and Norflox tablet, but my baby is vomiting in 10 mins after taking medicine, don't know how to give medicine to him please help me I am so much worried.

DNB (Pediatrics)
Pediatrician, Hyderabad
Good morning. For a 1 year old weighing 10 kg poohing 7-8 times a day is normal unless if he has behavioural changes, very watery loose motions, dehydration signs, not passing urine less frequently, bloody stools, foul smelling stools, decreased intake of food. Hence if these signs are present in your kid then only go for medicational treatment or else its better to not use antibiotics unnecessarily which seems irrational. Thank you, have a nice day.

Why small kids between 5 to 13 use to bleed unnecessary from nose when play or ran. What is the cause and what is the diagnose for the same?

MD - Paediatrics
Pediatrician, Jamnagar
Usually it is due to minor crack in the delicate inner skin of nose mostly due to nose picking by children. It can occur frequently during cold due to itching inside the nose. When there is bleed from nose. Pinch the nose for 5 minutes and let the child breath from mouth. Bleeding will stop. If not, continue pinching the nose and mouth breathing and reach to a doctor or a clinic which attends emergency calls.

My younger daughter is 10 years old. She is not gaining her weight please suggest some diet for her.

MD - Paediatrics, MBBS
Pediatrician, Delhi
Hi, following advices will help: dietary advice: child should be given food in addition to milk, like fruits: banana, apple, mango, chiku, rice, cereals, paneer, yoghurt, paranthas, eggs, ghee and butter in every meal. Investigations: complete blood count with peripheral smear treatment: depending on the report, multivitamin or iron syrup, appetizer syrup and deworming syrup also needs to be given. I hope this has helped you. Wishing your child good health.

My baby girl is 50 days old she is not drinking breastmilk only dexolac premium 1 milk can I give her nandini milk or cows milk ors suggest me some other brand formula milk.

Homeopath, Faridabad
Hello. Avoid giving your baby cow's milk directly as chances of infection increases. Better to continue with Dexolac premium or some other formula like Nestle's Lactogen or Nestle's pre-NAN to her which is being specially designed (fortified with essential nutrients and hygienically packed for new born, easy to carry anywhere and the chances of getting infection is very low.
