My baby girl is now two years old. When she was born her tummy had a bit bulging umbilical cord which led doctor suspicious about Hernia which was ruled out after testing at birth level. However her stomach after two years has the same problem that her umbilical cord area is still outside and not inside. Please help me to know that is this worrisome and Shud I consult to any pediatrician or child specialist or should I ignore it?

DHMS (Hons.)
Homeopath, Patna
Hello, Lybrate user, It's a normal appearance in an infant which will be set right in during course of time of 3/4 months. It can very well be treated in homoeopathy, if remains unset. You need to send an image of umbilical cord of your child to begin medication to get it set right. Tk care.

My baby girl cries so often for past few days and is having poor feeding. She is teething fast. please advice.

Diploma in Child Health (DCH), F.I.A.M.S. (Pediatrics)
Pediatrician, Muzaffarnagar
Reason of cry appears to be hunger. Give her frequent feed. If you feel cry is due to teething, apply oracep or zytee gum paint. Else you may consult pediatrician.

Is their any possibility for normal delivery if the baby weight is 4.5 kgs. My mother-in-law is saying that her daughter gave birth to 4.5 kgs baby during delivery and it is a normal delivery. Is it possible?

M.D PEADIATRICS, MBBS
Pediatrician, Pune
Hello, its very unlikely. I will advice you to opt for planned caserian & not even think of normal delivry as your baby is very large & there r high chances of complications.

She don't eat home made mixed cerelac and instant cerelac also she like to drink formula milk and banana only. How to change her habits and how to improve her weight. Please guide me.

Fellowship In Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology And Nutrition, MD - Paediatrics, MBBS

There is no medication for weight gain. If you r using bottle for feeding. Stop it. This habit forming and children refuses to eat then. Give home made fresh food only. All seasonal fruits. All veg soups. Khichdi.and continue breast milk.

Just give her a plain cup ice-cream, soft cold diet for few days, ask your pediatrician and put her on antibiotics, no more dental intervention is required at this age.

Advice For A Breastfeeding Mom

MS - Obstetrics and Gynaecology, MBBS
Gynaecologist, Agra
Advice For A Breastfeeding Mom
Health advice for a breastfeeding mom

Breastfeeding mothers need to be conscious and aware of their diets. How the mother eats is how the child gets its nutrition. While they do not need any major changes from what they were eating during the pregnancy, a few adjustments are advised. A few basic adjustments in daily routine are enough. They are:

1. Eat very well - Eat a balanced diet to suit your health. Remember, first it is important to meet your nutritional needs. Only when you are eating well would the quality and quantity of your milk be ideal for your baby. Do not diet under any circumstance. We understand you wish to lose all the pregnancy weight soon, but remember, you child is your priority now. When you diet, your body will start drawing on its reserves. This will affect milk production. By dieting, you will also lack the amount of stamina you need to take care of your baby. Be aware that feeling extra hungry during breastfeeding is normal. Your body is working around the clock. Eat small meals at regular intervals to keep your hunger satisfied, your weight concern at bay and your body strong.

2. Don't count your calories - Not until you are breastfeeding. You need at least 500 calories more than you did when you were not breastfeeding. Don't let this shock you, your child will be feeding off you. There are other ways to regulate your weight and lose the extra pounds gained during pregnancy, do not compromise on food at all.

3. Do not rush to exercise - Consult your doctor and ask for suitable exercises for your body. You might have stitches which are yet to dry, so don't be hasty. Get your workout regime planned professionally and under guidance.

4. Do not avoid fats - Eat healthy foods and opt for good fats. Foods that are good for you and for milk production are a big yes. Foods which do not contribute in any positive way can be done without. They will only harm you in the long run.

5. Avoid alcohol - Stay away, and if you do want to indulge consult your doctor. An occasional drink is usually okay, still it is better you abstain altogether until you stop breastfeeding. And if you do have a drink, feed at least after two hours.

Hi doctor, I'm feedings my one year baby past three days milk dust created in my right breast having too pain also cause fever. Please give medical suggestions asap. Thank you.

MBBS, MD - Paediatrics
Pediatrician, Mumbai
It's quit unusual to have such problem suddenly after 1 yr, usually mother has it during initial phase or maybe if breastfeeding is discontinued for some time and restarted. This seems to be mastitis issue. Take lot of water and paracetamol for fever and pain. Meet gynecologist if you don't have relief after 1 day of this therapy.

My daughter 6+. IGE value is 2109. Doctors gave MONTEC L C KID ONCE DAILY. After that he suffer stomach pain. It is side effect of the medicine or other? USG of whole abdomen is normal. Is any side effect of medicine?

MD - Paediatrics, MBBS

That drug usually will not give rise to any serious side effects except for sedation. Stomach pain may not be related to that. You can give for worms and observe.

U have not mentioned range of temp. It appears that you r assessing her temp by touching body. Maintain her temp chart 4 times in a day for 4 days and get back. In the mean time she develops fever and not comfortable, consult pediatrician.

My 5 months son have fiver since last 3-4 days. All the day he remains normal but in the late night or early morning he has fiver. Doctor asked to give paracip drops 3-4 time a day. Today morning his temp was 100. 6 f. Please suggest what I have to do.

Pediatrician, Mumbai
Are there any other symptoms other than fever? continue paracetamol drops every 4 to 6 hourly and add ibugesic drops if fever continues to be high grade. If despite this, there is high fever get investigations (cbc, crp, urine routine) done.
