Knee Pain - Causes And Symptoms

Your knee is a very complex structure consisting of bones, ligaments, cartilage, tendons, muscles and meniscus. Most people encounter knee pain at some point in their lives. If your knee pain is chronic in nature, then it may last for a prolonged period.

Many causes may be responsible for your knee pain. Some of the causes are stated as follows:

1. Your knee is very much prone to injuries. Knee injuries may happen due to accidents, falling down carelessly or while playing sports. The most common knee injuries that may be the cause for your knee pain are mentioned as follows: 

  • Fractures may cause you to feel pain in the areas of your knee bones.
  • Anterior Cruciate Ligament injury (ligament injury caused by twisting and a sudden motion) or Medial Collateral Ligament injury (injury to the tissue in the insides of your knee) is very common to sportspersons and may be the reason for severe knee pain.
  • Sometimes your knee bones may get dislocated from their usual alignment. This can also make you experience severe knee pain.
  • Ligament injuries, meniscus tear or tendon tear can also be responsible for your knee pain.

2. Sometimes pain in your buttock or foot region can also result in mild knee pain.

3. At times chronic problems like osteoarthritis that affects the cartilage can cause the problem of knee pain. Other chronic problems like Gout, rheumatoid arthritis can also cause severe knee pain.

4. Being overweight can also result in knee pain.

The symptoms of knee pain may be different in each case. The most common symptoms are mentioned below:

  • Stiffness of knee
  • Swelling of your knee
  • You may also feel unstable
  • Difficulty in walking or bending of your knee
  • You may notice redness in your knee area

Knee pain must not be ignored. It is highly recommended for you to seek advice from an orthopedic as soon as you encounter any of the above mentioned symptoms. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult an orthopedist.

Hello, your pain and burning like sensation is an altered sensation called as paraesthesia which generally is due to problem in the neck vertebra and it's compromised nerve supply. This is caused to faulty neck posture, forward neck, prolonged wrist and finger overuse which over stresses the structure and it's underlying components like muscles, ligament, tendons etc. Your burning sensation in thumb could be due to biomechanical misalignment in the c5-c6 vertebra median nerve. Get a xray done for your cervical spine ap view and lateral (not a stress xray view). This will help to decipher the problem accurately along with needed further examination. In the mean time avoid stress, correct your posture. You can try median nerve flossing exercise as many times possible in a day until your symptoms subside significantly. Remember this is a temporary solution. In order to get it fixed, you must visit a skilled orthopedic manual therapist. You may need supplement to keep your joints and nervous system healthy. Take, boswellia serrata (shallaki) 350 mg twice daily after meal for three months. Hope this helps. Thanks.

Quadriceps Exercises- Lie straight, make a towel role and put it under the knee, press the keen against the role, hold it for 20 secs. Repeat 20 times twice a day. This will help relieve some pain. Core Strengthening Exercise- Straight Leg Raised With Toes Turned Outward, repeat 10 times, twice a day. Hams Stretching- lie straight, take the leg up, pull the feet towards yourself, with a elastic tube or normal belt. repeat 10 times, twice a day.

I' m 33 male, i' ve been having pain only on the right side on the back, at the base of the spine, could it be slip disk as it is not present on the left side?

It could be due to slip disc or low vitamin d levels. Even if u have slip disc it not very severe as the pain is not going down the leg. Get your vitamin d levels done (blood test) fasting and do spinal extension exercises (physiotherapist can teach you) 20 mins 3 times a day. Revert back with reports.

My right foot and ankle are swollen and painful. I find it difficult to get down and climb up the stairs. When I elevate my feet on 2 pillows, the swelling goes dow. Also my toes are numb and I keep on getting catches on my feet and legs when I am sleeping.

Hello G, it might be due to sodium and potassium deficiency, dehydration also causes such conditions. Start doing active ankle toe movement with leg elevated and placed on two pillows.

Hi thanks for your query and welcome to lybrate. I am Dr. Akshay from fortis hospital, new delhi. Actually pain at calf/leg region can be due to many reasons, commonly it is muscular in nature but it can also be due to tendons, nerves, blood vessels etc. My advise to you for initial 2-3 weeks will be: - ice packs application intensively with elevation of your limbs at night - take a short course of anti-inflammatory medication as per your body's suitability - stop your physical activity till pain completely subsides - intensive physical therapy, training and proper muscle conditioning once pain has subsided - slow resumption of physical activities with proper pre activity warm up and stretching of muscles and short increments in duration of physical activity each day as per pain tolerance. - we will get some blood tests for you - serum vitamin d and serum potassium levels, esr and crp once you have all these reports then you can contact me as I can advise you for proper supplementation do not hesitate to contact me if you need any further assistance. Heel pain ( Calcinitis ) also known as plantar facitis especially in the morning is commonly seen in young adults. It does not require treatment. Pain killers ( anti inflammatory drugs ) will only give temporary relief. Calf muscle exercises, aerobic exercises and good foot wear are the only things that help. Cold sponging with ice will help in reducing the pain
