Rest First, you should rest your back. This doesn’t mean weeks of bed rest. Resting your back for about 48 hours after an injury or after the first time you notice significant pain. After that, you can slowly increase your activity level. Getting up and moving as soon as spasms and sharp pains subside can help ease pain and stiffness. Ice or Heat Applying ice or heat directly to the area of low back pain can help to decrease swelling and inflammation, and ease your discomfort. Studies have found that heat may be more beneficial than ice, but both been shown to alleviate low back pain. Once the pain subsides consult your physiotherapists for a exercise routine to strengrhen your back and core muscles.

High Blood Pressure - Common Risk Factors That You Must Know!

The heart is a muscular organ that pumps blood to the entire body through a network of arteries and veins. This network contains big vessels which branch out further to supply blood to the distant organs. There is, therefore, some pressure that the heart and thereby the vessels need to exert to push the blood through these vessels. This is known as blood pressure, and normal pressure levels range from 90-140(systolic)/60-90(diastolic) mm of Hg. However, due to various reasons, this pressure could be more, which is one of the first signs of heart disease. 

Causes of increased blood pressure: 

  1. Thickening of the blood vessels. With age, the elastic blood vessels naturally turn rigid and less elastic, so there is more pressure required to push blood. It is natural for people over 55 years of age to have higher readings of blood pressure. This is known as primary hypertension (HTN) 
  2. Narrowed blood vessels. This happens due to cholesterol accumulation along the walls of the blood vessels. Faulty dietary habits along with sedentary lifestyle have increased the incidence of hypertension due to this condition, known as atherosclerosis. Critical atherosclerotic narrowing of renal arteries lead to renovascular HTN that is one of the commonest of secondary HTN. 

Other Causes of secondary hypertension are: 

  1. Kidney problems 
  2. Thyroid hormone disorders 
  3. Congenital heart defects 
  4. Chronic alcohol abuse 
  5. Adrenal gland tumours 
  6. Chronic use of medications like birth control pills, pain killers, etc. 

Unidentified and uncontrolled hypertension can be silent and can lead to more severe conditions like heart attack and stroke. India is fast becoming the new hypertension capital of the world. Some of the common risk factors are: 

  1. Age 
  2. Family history 
  3. Being obese or overweight 
  4. Sedentary lifestyle 
  5. Smoking 
  6. Alcohol consumption 
  7. Excessive salt intake 
  8. Stress levels 
  9. Ethnic background 

Symptoms: 

  1. Hypertension can go undetected for years together, but if there are risk factors like diabetes and high cholesterol, it is advisable to periodically monitor blood pressure. 
  2. Headaches, nosebleeds, and shortness of breath should not be ignored. These can be the first warning signs of hypertension, and if detected early, preventive measures can be taken. 
  3. If there are co-morbid risk factors, it is advisable to constantly keep a check on BP readings. 

Management: 

This includes a combination of diet and lifestyle modifications. 

  1. Quit smoking and alcohol: Of the many wonders quitting smoking can do, reducing BP readings is just one. The improvement would be almost instantaneous. Quit or else reduce alcohol and see dramatic improvements. 
  2. Weight management: Through a combination of diet and exercise, ensure that weight is brought under control. Set a target BMI (Below 26 kg/m2) and work towards it religiously. 
  3. Diet: Reduce salt, increase potassium, increase vitamin D, eat a heart-healthy diet, and see the hypertension readings improve. Please find attached and reviewed copy for health tip for posting

Hi I have started taking novelon from Jun 1 St everyday. In between 2 days I has unprotected sex and intercourse with my husband. Today while having sex I couldn't produce any liquid discharge from vaginal is der any chance of pregnancy. Please help. My periods ended on 26 May. Hi lybrate-user Was the tablet prescribed or did you buy it from a pharmacy. It needs to be taken from Day 2 of period, not 4 days after periods ended. After starting pill, it takes 7 days for the drug to become effective. Having unprotected intercourse before 7 days increases you risk of pregnancy. It is too early to say if you are pregnant. You'll have to wait till 25-26th June and do pregnancy test. Taking pill or being pregnant had nothing to do with sexual responses.

Hi Siva, ask her to have lots of protein, fruits and vegetables in diet. Also have plenty of water. She can have dry fruits also. Avoid pineapple, papaya in diet .

I suspect that the adolescent issues with regard to hormones may be affecting your ability to concentrate and remember. When the hormones play up, it lasts for a period of close to two years and during that time you could be influenced by three signs directly impacted by the chemical: you will tend to become aggressive and rebellious, you will become sexually active, and you will have acne and pimple problems. The hormonal imbalances may not only impact your memory because of the chemical but also bring some distractions that come with it. But you may work on the following even if the hormones kick in: Daily exercise of at least half an hour is a must. Even if you go to a gym, ask for aerobic and/or callisthenic exercises with whatever else you are doing. A healthy body harbors a healthy mind. With regard to memory, it is very important that your brain and body is ideally rested to be able to recall whatever is required, rather comfortably. Puzzles pose problems to the brain that help it to use new pathways and neurons, which give the brain considerable exercise. It taxes the left brain to use logic to solve the myriad possibilities which other activities do not stimulate. Crosswords are excellent for vocabulary learning and use. Jigsaws and Rubik cube stimulate different permutations to finally settle on the most likely one. Picture completion and anagrams help approach problem-solving from several angles. Do Sudoku, and memory co-relation activities and skills. Have a good night’s sleep, have a good breakfast of more proteins, meditate often, remain free of stress, eat a lot of fiber (whole grains, fruits and vegetables), nuts, avocado, eat dark chocolate, consume less of fat and use olive oil instead, do Yoga meditation exercises, etc. You need to check out if you are stronger visual or auditory. The visual is a better mode than the auditory. However, if you combine the two modes, you will get the best concentration. Have a special place of learning, which should be well lit, with soft painted walls, well-ventilated, with no distractions. When you get bored, study by writing. If you repeat learning, at least, five to seven times, you will apparently remember for a longer time. Sit comfortably but do not slouch. The reading material should be of a fairly large print. Study at small intervals of about 40 minutes and then take a break or change the subject. Short-term memory is a faculty of the left brain, and long-term memory is a feature of the right brain. When people are stressed, they tend to favor the right brain and abandon the left brain, where short-term memory resides. So, it is really very simple: deal with the stress and activate left brain functions. Here are a few suggestions to activate left brain function: shut your left nostril and breathe, move your eyes from right to left and vice versa for at least half a minute at a time, and do callisthenic exercises with some form of counting, regularly. There is a new exercise called Super Brain Yoga, which is done by holding the right earlobe with your left thumb and index finger, and the left earlobe with your right hand’s thumb and index finger. In this position, you must squat down and rise up and do this for five minutes every day. There is some memory enhancing techniques and study methods that your teacher will be able to guide you with. If your home life is full of distractions and stress, it is likely to affect your memory, adversely. In that case, I suggest that the family goes for counseling too. The following foods do help too: Blueberries, walnuts, turmeric, Spinach, tomatoes, broccoli, acorn squash, green tea, oily fish, boiled egg, turkey, apples, oatmeal, leafy greens, lentils, pumpkin seeds, avocado, cinnamon, thyme, sunflower seeds, and red wine. Avoid sugar and junk food.

Pregnancy is possible only on one day of cycle, day of ovulation when ovum is released from ovary of woman. That is why couple should have 12 to 24 cycles of unprotected sex around time of ovulation before going to Gynecologist or infertility specialist for further evaluation and advise. However you with treatment of Thyroid may go little early for further evaluation and treatment.

Dear lybrate user. Below are the health tips which will help you out. -your first meal should be consumed within 15-30 minutes of waking up and consumed every 2.5 to 3 hours. - add some extra carbohydrates and proteins to your breakfast, pre-workout meal or post-workout meal. -or proteins you can take cottage cheese, yogurt and partly skimmed cheeses -you can also include non vegetarian sources eggs whites and meats as ground beef, chicken, turkey, etc -for carbohydrates choose complex carbs, such as bran, barley, buckwheat, beans, brown rice, cornmeal, oatmeal and whole grains -you should include at least 50 g of good fats through dried fruits, nuts and seeds like almonds, walnuts, flax seeds -take at least 2 servings of green vegetables which is the equivalent of 1-2 cups per meal every 2-3 hours - start workout and eat your biggest meal at breakfast, pre-workout & post-workout your food intake should come from high quality food and you will be amazed at the results achieved by simply putting all your efforts into following your meal plan, proper training and sleep.

Hello,greetings from olmec hope you are fine the male pattern baldness is becoming very common nowadays, that too with early onset. The only permanent and safe solution which gives tremendous psychological benefits by changing your looks is hair transplant. The state of art micro follicular hair transplant gives excellent results with permanent naturally growing hairs practically without any scar and without any side effects. In one stage we can put as many as 4000 to 7000 hair grafts (follicular units) aiming good density for the area covered (megasession and gigasession covering maximum area with excellent density is the main distinguishing feature at olmec).
