Hi all, I am suffering from gran mal epilepsy from past 6 years. My age is 21 and I had been taking medication for the last 5 years but still I am suffering. Its really difficult for me to study or work due to this disorder. My doctor says that you have to take medication for the lifetime which is really scary, so I researched the Internet and got to know that the disorder can be remedied by some surgery. So right now want some consulting and help that what should I do. I'll be very thankful for your help.

DM - Neurology
Neurologist, Rajkot
First the type of your epilepsy should be diagnosed properly. If medicines can control your seizures, surgery is not indicated. Only if seizures are uncontrolled, surgery is considered. For that you have to consult personally to determine the course of management.

Tia is a warning sign of stroke. So you have to worry but not that much. I understand about your phobia about getting again same problem but dear if you maintain yourself and take some precautions then chances are very less. Please make sure: 1. If you are overweight try to reduce. 2. Brisk walking daily for 30 minutes. 3. Cardiovascular exercises daily for endurance and strength and to make your heart fit. 4. Regular intake of excess water in your diet. 5. Avoid junk food, carbohydrates. 6. Take healthy diet that enrich you with proteins, vitamins. 7. If diabetic make sure sugar level should be maintained. 8. If hypertensive, make sure bp should not reach to too high or too low along with hr. 9. Avoid stressful life. 10. Meet some physio and learn daily exercises that will keep you fit and healthy along with some modification in your lifestyle. 11. Avoid fasting - eat breakfast, lunch and dinner at fixed timings. 12. Make yourself busy by fulfilling your hobby as it will give you freshness and your mind will be diverted from normal life. 13. Take min 7 hours of sleep. 14. Avoid taking caffeine, alcohol, phenylethylamine (found in chocolate and cheese), tyramine (found in nuts and fermented meats, cheeses, and soy), and aspartame (in many artificially sweetened foods) as sometimes these all exaggerate the condition. Instead use basil leaves tea or ginger tea boiled nicely in water without milk. Do not worry about getting tia / cva. If you keep yourself relax and avoid stress you will be healthy and then no disease no tia.

5 Telltale Signs of Hearing Loss

MS - ENT(Gold Medalist), MBBS
Ear-Nose-Throat (ENT) Specialist, Delhi
5 Telltale Signs of Hearing Loss

Ageing is not the only factor that brings hearing impairment. The causes are many. Certain medications, continuous exposure to loud noise, genetic involvement, injury and some medical conditions may cause hearing loss.

But if you think that you are facing hearing issues, then these symptoms should raise an alarm for you to see an ENT specialist:

  1. You find it hard to hear phone conversations: Do you find yourself asking the person on the other end of the phone line to 'repeat' themselves, or find yourself pressing the phone instrument right into your ear? If you are trying so hard to hear, you might find yourself missing out on bits of the conversation as focussing to clearly hear the conversation is exhausting work. Getting a hearing test might be a good option if this sounds like you.
  2. Your TV is blaring: Do you often find people around you shouting above the TV sound complaining that it's too loud? When you find it hard to hear the TV at the average volume and find yourself turning up the sound, this could signify a hearing loss. Doctors are seeing a growing number of patients visiting them after prolonged exposure to loud music and sounds.
  3. You have trouble hearing in noisy environments: When you are out dining with friends or family at a busy restaurant or accompanying a friend shopping in a busy street, all that background noise makes it difficult to hear what the people are saying. People with hearing loss often have problems masking out background noise.
  4. You find yourself leaning closer to people to follow the conversation or staring at their lips trying to lip-read what's being said.
  5. Family members telling 'you're going deaf'?: Trust the views of the people closest to you, they never lie about your health. Family members often are the first to sense signs of hearing loss as they find themselves repeating things to you or calling out louder to get your 'attention'.

Hi Dr. I hav epilepsy since last many years. I am taking medicines of zenoxa OD 450 right now. Earlier I was taking zenoxa OD 600 and 900 under my Dr. (neurologist) guidance in last one year. So Dr. I just want to know is it this decease curable and is there is any chances that the seizures will not occur if I stop medicines after consulting with my Dr? Please make me aware about it. Thanks in advance.

MBBS, DMCH, DEM
General Physician, Jaipur
As you know well ,Epileptic drugs should not be stopped suddenly, If higher doses are no longer required, Doses are tappered graduall, under guidance of Neurologists. in most cases chances of recurrence are low .but it also depends upon the type & cause of epilepsy.

What causes panic disorder or panic attack. It can be cure in short period or take time to cure. If it occurs suddenly e. G when in office, driving, market etc. Etc. What is the emergency steps to be taken. Coz. It fill like, it's going to be heart attack, the heart beats very quickly, shaking body sometimes feel that I am going to be die it occurs, feeling very uncomfortable. So, please give a good advice to overcome this illness.

MBBS
General Physician, Allahabad
It is purely non- confident state of mental health. Those with strong will power can resist any such attack successfully and come out to be victorious even though the attack was a real one. So try to develop confidence in yourself as your un - supportive will power is your only enemy. In this disease confrontation with each other and reassurance helps most rather than any drug.
