Cervical spondylosis, also known as cervical osteoarthritis or neck arthritis, is a common, age-related condition that affects the joints and discs in your neck. Treatments for cervical spondylosis focus on providing pain relief, lowering the risk of permanent damage, and helping you lead a normal life. Nonsurgical methods are usually very effective. Heat is an effective mean of reducing and relieving pain in cervical spondylosis. You can use hot packs at home. Some exercises like static contractions and strengthening exercises are needs to be done. Isometric contractions of the cervical muscles improve the muscle endurance and tone as the contractions improve the blood supply thereby the nutrition to the muscle is increased and hence muscle strengthening is done. Please see a physiotherapist for these exercises. You may need traction and soft tissue techniques for the management of cs. Postural awareness is very important. As the condition progresses, the abnormality of posture also increases, thus from the initial stage itself, postural awareness through proper advice and education should be planned and initiated by the physiotherapist. Your doctor/physiotherapist may not be able to reverse the condition, but they can often recommend conservative treatments to help you overcome the discomfort and pain. Best wishes.

Treat Chronic Pain

Pain can be musculoskeletal like back pain, shoulder pain or knee pain. Watch out to identify yours.

I am Dr. Siddharth VermaI deal with patients suffering from chronic pain. Chronic pain is any pain which is more than 12 weeks or three months in duration and if a patient is suffering from chronic pain they require special treatment and they require physician specially trained to treat the people who have chronic pain. So this pain can be musculoskeletal, then it may be back pain or the pain of the knee. There are various structures in the back which can give rise to the pain.

I'll tell you more about it if you see our skeleton, this is a model showing the back of a human and as we can see these are the vertebral bodies or the small bones which make up the human back, and these the yellow things, these are the nerves which are coming out of the small holes which are known as the foramen. And what you see here between these two bones is a disc and this is a portion of these two bones because when a person moves he actually bends, rolls place then all this moment like this. It occurs on this joint as you can see and this disc this help us to maintain this mobility. So now what happens is with growing age this can become bulging like you can see this red buzzing portion this compresses on this root which is coming out of here. This is what may lead to the pain there may be other mechanisms also and it is very essential that qualified pain physician actually evaluates you. If you have any back pain and then physician treats you accordingly.

So there are various equipment options which are available and ranging from drugs. So you can start with drugs and go to injections in the nerve roots and then we can further do pinhole surgery. It is like we can go through the needle to that and then gradually release the patient of his or her pain.Similarly, like back pain is the treatment for those suffering from knee pain. As we can see it's also 2 bonus and then instead of the disc we have this cartilage which is present here. Muscles slide this cartilage and this thing over here is your muscle which is coming over this knee joint. If this muscle is not strong enough or if the cartilage is damaged then you may have problems with your knee.

So what do we do is that if a person comes to us with the pain of the knee then we need to access a lot of ligaments. If you see it's a very complex and complicated joint if you see there are a lot of small ligaments and it is meniscal. There is cartilage so we have to analyze where the pain is coming from, once we analyze that then we prepare accordingly. We can start with drugs, we can use substances which help to form the cartilage, we can use Prolotherapy which is a new form of regeneration therapy which helps to regenerate cartilage, or we can numb those nerves which are actually carrying this pain.So you do not worry this will not lead to any weakness.

So musculoskeletal pain after revaluation can be treated and can be managed and to get rid of your pain or to know more you can simply visit my lybrate website.

Nd yes as far as possible do not use staircase till you reduce your wt to 74 kg. Do not bend your knee for more than 90 degree. I mean stop using indian toilets nd use western toilets. Use dining table for taking lunch or dinner. I mean do not sit on the floor.

Namaskar sir,
From last one month I am having visible twitching on my both thighs near my quads after every 20 minute...
Muscle twitching is generally harmless. In certain cases it may be caused by serious illnesses affecting the nerves or muscles or spinal cord and brain. Thyroid and Parathyroid hormone dysfunction can also cause it. If your twitching is accompanied by 1. weakness of hands or legs 2. vision defects 3. loss of control over urine or stools 4. loss of sensation or tingling 5.difficulty breathing or swallowing Consult immediately with your doctor. You can get your Thyroid and Parathyroid hormone levels checked. If problem persists or is severe you may need MRI of brain and spine.

Apply hot fomentation twice daily. Avoid bending in front. Postural correction- sit tall, walk tall. Extension exercises x 15 times x twice daily - lying on tummy, take left arm up for 3 seconds, then bring it down, right arm up for 3 seconds, bring down. Bring right leg up, hold for 3 seconds, bring it down. Then right leg up and hold for 3 seconds and bring it down. Repeat twice a day- 10 times. Bhujang asana -- lie flat on your stomach, keeping the palms out, bend the neck backward, take a deep breath and while holding it for 6 seconds, raise the chest up. Release breath and relax your body. Repeat the exercise 15 times twice daily. Core strengthening exercises- straight leg raised with toes turned outward, repeat 10 times, twice a day.

Tennis Elbow

MPT - Orthopedic Physiotherapy
Physiotherapist, Delhi
Tennis Elbow

Tennis elbow is caused by a strain to the tendons in your forearm. You may feel pain in your arm and tenderness in your elbow.Try the exercises suggested here to help ease pain and prevent future symptoms.

Tennis elbow treatment: Treatment involves reducing symptoms of pain and inflammation through rest and applying ice or cold therapy, then gradually increasing the load through the elbow through exercises to a point where normal training and competition can be resumed.Ice & compression - In the first 72 hours post injury, you should apply the principles of P.R.I.C.E. (Protection, Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation).

Apply a cold compression wrap for no more than 15 minutes as the injured tissues are very close to the skin and do not need longer.Protection - Wear a specialist elbow brace or support can help reduce the strain on the tendon enabling healing to take place. This works by applying compression around the upper arm which puts pressure on the injured tendon, changing the way forces are transmitted through it allowing the injured tissues to rest.

Rest - This is probably the most impotant part of treatment and is often difficult to do. If you continue to use the painful elbow then it will not recover as quickly and may become chronic and very difficult to treat. Avoid gripping heavy things, opening heavy doors, using a screw driver and of course playing a backhand in tennis.

Sports massage can be a useful treatment for tennis elbow, particularly more chronic conditions. In particular cross friction massage of the tendon insertion but only once the initial inflammation has settled (after 5 day) is done. Place the 2nd finger of your opposite hand on the outside of the elbow and rub across the tendon (painful area) for 5 minutes. Do not press too hard but there may be some mild pain whilst having the area 'frictioned'. Repeat once a day. Do not carry on with this exercise if the pain worsens after the treatment.

A professional therapist or doctor may prescribe medication such as Ibuprofen to help reduce symptoms in the early stages, however the effectiveness of this long term is disputed. In addition electrotherapy such as ultrasound, laser, extracorporeal shock wave therapy, acupuncture, corticosteroid injections, nitric oxide donor therapy patches, botox injections and autologogous blood injection are all treatments available for treating medial epicondylitis.Read more on these and tennis elbow treatments.

Exercises: Both stretching and strengthening exercises are important and provide the foundation of a rehabilitation program. The exercises should be performed as soon as pain allows and then continued until and after full fitness has been achieved.Wrist extension stretches and exercises are the most important with the aim of gradually increasing the load transmitted through the tendon and its attachment whilst also being within the limits of pain. Isometric (also known as static exercises) are done first and involve contracting the muscles without actually moving the wrist. They should only be started once the initial pain and inflammation has settled down.

I am 34 year old male. I got hurt on my left knee in 2015 and the pain took quite some time to go. But now after longs hours of sitting, if I start to walk, it pains and the movement is not smooth (doesn't happen after a sleep, it happens mainly when I am working on my laptop or sitting in a car for a long time). It takes some time to come back to normal. Please let me know WHY this is happening, if this is serious or it will heal naturally with time. Are there any exercises etc that can be done to bring it back to normal.

There are multiple causes of knee pain, but often it's the result of the knee cap, known as the patella, being out of alignment and tracking incorrectly. This improper alignment and tracking can be due to an imbalance of strength between the four muscles that make up the group of muscles known as the quadriceps, located on the anterior, or front, of the thigh. This large muscle group crosses the knee joint. Typically, the most lateral quadriceps muscle, vastus lateralis, is the strongest muscle of the quadriceps group and overpowers the more medial quadriceps muscle, vastus medialis. This imbalance in strength causes the kneecap to track improperly because it is pulled laterally and out of its track by the stronger muscle. Strengthening the medial quadriceps muscles can be helpful in correcting this uneven pull by balancing out strength, which then allows the knee cap to track within its natural path. Please see a Physiotherapist for assessment and management of your knee pain Best wishes.
