I am 23 years old. I usually smoke 1-2 cigarettes a day. I got a Root canal treatment on a molar tooth of mine around 10 years ago. The RCT tooth has now developed an infection and 2 dentists told me I need to get it removed. One said I will have to get an artificial implant after 4 months of removal, not sooner in any case and the other said only 15 days. Which one should I go with?

Dear lybrate user, placement of implants conventionally was and is frequently done after allowing the tooth socket to heal for 3-4 months but sometimes in cases especially of single implant placement, dentists place the implant immediately after the extraction i. E. In the same sitting. So it's either after 3-4 months or immediately, the 15 days later concept doesn't sound convincing.

Hi Ms. lybrate-user, I appreciate you seeking help. Well, the exact cause of recurrent oral ulcer (s) though unknown, you can take the following steps in general to lessen the incidences of the same - (a) Maintain oral hygiene on a regular basis - keep your mouth clean and healthy. (b) You can reduce the risk of damage to your mouth by using good quality & soft toothbrushes and also by leveling off rough edges of teeth/ dentures, if any. Preferably, I would recommend use of 'Neem' toothpaste for brushing. (c) Eat a healthy and balanced diet rich in vitamins A, B, C and E. Include fresh fruit and green leafy vegetables to reduce the risks of oral cancer. (d) Take Green tea, up to 2 times daily. Stay well hydrated. (e) Avoid high calorie, greasy, fatty, oily foods including fast foods. Restrict consumption of sweets, carbonated drinks etc all. (f) Apart from diet, make sure you streamline your lifestyle too with daily exercises, de-stressing and relaxation. If you are habitually constipated, the above-mentioned shall help. (g) You can take a tablet of probiotics (like 'Sporlac DS' or 'Becelac forte' capsules) daily before food, subject to your dentist's concurrence. As an alternative, you may take once curd and buttermilk spiced up with a little bit of turmeric on a daily basis. (h) If the ulcer pains, you can apply a pain relieving gel (as advised by your dentist), locally. Do gargle / rinse your mouth with Betadine gargle (not to be swallowed) 2 to 3 times daily, after food. Alternately, you can also use warm saline water for gargling. (i) Should the ulcer pain, you can apply (topically) a layer of fresh and pasteurized honey (good quality) on the ulcer (s). You may also slowly apply ice cubes for sometime to alleviate pain. (j) Last but not the least, regularly visit your dentist. If you see the ulcer not healing up for more than 3 weeks, do visit your dentist promptly, and get the same clinically examined. Hope this helps. Do take care and all the very best.

Dentist,
I have tooth decay what can I do with natural things at home for relief ?
Once decay starts in the teeth it can't be stopped. This is a progressive process. Go for x-ray to rule out the extant of the decay. After that treatment can be decided either filling or rct. Brush your teeth regularly. Use chlorhexidine mouthwash.

What is a Dental Implant? Is It Right For Me?

Certified Implantologist, BDS

What is a Dental Implant? Is It Right For Me?
Have you ever had the dream where one or more of your teeth fall out? What do you do if you lose a tooth in real life?
One option is to get a dental implant. This is a procedure where an Implantologist surgically places an artificial tooth that’s surgically fused in the jawbone—a fantastic long-term option for tooth replacement. Decades ago, if you lost a tooth, your choices were a fixed bridge or removable dentures. Fixed bridges rely on neighboring healthy teeth as anchors, which can have a negative impact on them down the road. And, removable dentures can slip or make embarrassing clicking sounds when you speak.
A dental implant—made of titanium metal—fuses to the jawbone, serving as the root of the missing tooth. Unlike fixed bridges, which may need to be replaced two and three times during a lifetime, implants are durable and rarely, if ever, need to be replaced.
