Eat 10-12 almonds, the equivalent of two aspirins, for a migraine headache. Almonds are far less likely to upset the stomach.

Purpose and Types of Brain Tumor Surgery

MCh - Neurosurgery, MBBS
Neurosurgeon, Chennai
Purpose and Types of Brain Tumor Surgery

Although surgery is considered to be the first step of treatment in any form of tumor but its feasibility depends upon the type, size and location of the tumor. It is not necessary that every kind of brain tumor might require surgery.

Indications of Brain Tumor Surgery

  • Diagnosis of the type of tumor by taking a sample of the tumor for laboratory examination
  • Complete resection of tumor
  • Removal of the tumor as much as possible to slow down its growth and improve the symptoms.
  • Remove the tumor in order to help other treatment
  • Provide direct access for other forms of treatment like chemotherapy, radiotherapy etc.
  • To relieve pressure caused by tumor on surrounding structures

Types of Brain Tumor Surgery

The different types of surgery that are performed in cases of brain tumor include the following:

Craniotomy: Craniotomy is the most commonly performed procedure to remove brain tumor along with a piece of bone. The removed bone is replaced and the tumor is sent for histopathology (biopsy). The surgery is performed using a high end microscope by any of the following techniques:

  • Extended bifrontal craniotomy
  • "Eyebrow" craniotomy (supra-orbital craniotomy)
  • "Keyhole" craniotomy (retro-sigmoid craniotomy)
  • Orbitozygomatic craniotomy
  • Translabyrinthine craniotomy

Shunt: A narrow piece of flexible tube with a pressure regulated valve in between is called a shunt. This is used to relieve the intracranial pressure caused by obstruction of the natural brain fluid (CSF) pathway by tumor mass. The procedure involves insertion of a drainage system into the brain to remove or drain excess of blocked fluid into the peritoneal cavity.

Stereotactic surgery: This surgery is done by creating a three-dimensional image called stereotaxy using computers. It aims to find out the location and position of the tumor. In fact it can also be done to aid tumor removal, implant radiation pellets or for other treatments.

Embolization: It is a procedure used to reduce the amount of blood supply to a tumor by blocking the blood flow in the selected arteries. It is generally performed before the main surgery.

Endoscopy and endoscope assisted surgery: Endoscope is the tool which helps to closely visualize the tissue through small openings in difficult to reach areas. This tool can be used in various brain surgeries to precisely reach the target location without damaging the adjacent structures.

Adjuvant modalities to improve outcome: In addition to above mentioned surgeries, following surgeries may also be performed in relation to brain tumor treatment:

  • Laser surgery
  • Photodynamic laser surgery
  • Ultrasonic aspiration
  • Fluorescent-guided surgery
  • Electrophysiological monitoring

If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a neurosurgeon.

How To Get Rid Of Allergies?

MD - Ayurveda
Ayurveda, Delhi
Play video

Hello friends, my name is Dr Sandeep Madaan. I have done MD in Ayurveda from the University of Rajasthan. I am practising Ayurveda in Delhi from last 14 years.

Today, we will talk about Allergies- Allergy Rhinitis, Dermatitis, allergy sinusitis.

The modern medical science gives the reasons for allergies, antigens or allergance that are prevalant in our environment. But an Ayurveda differs here that defines that allergy occurs due to low immune system. The person whose immune system is low will be affected by the allergy more than the person whose immunity is very high.

Allergic manifestations like allergic rhinitis can result in running nose, sneezing.

Allergic dermatitiscan manifest some allergic rashes or itching on the skin.

Allergic sinusitis is accompanied by recurrent cold, difficulty in breathing and headache.

In Ayurveda, there is very good treatment for allergic disorders. Many herbs like haldi, ashwagandha, giloe are very effective in fighting with the allergy. Ayurvedic herbs boosts the immunity of the person. Immunity is boosted and adaptogens to the environment. The allergance, the antigens, the toxins present in the environment does not affect the immunity and over the long term when the immunity is boosted, relieved by these conditions.

If you want to contact me, you can contact through Lybrate.

Thank you.

Children with history of seizures beginning at around 6 years of age need complete evaluation. Children are more prone for seizures until age of 15-16 years. Do to st or deuce dose of medications if advised by a doctor. If the child has a tendency to seize more frequently inspite of taking regular medications, it is worthwhile to do serum drug levels, an eeg and consider adding or changing or stepping up the dose of medications.

Hi lybrate-user! Actually speaking ask your mum take some multivitamins consisting of Iron and calcium. It happens mostly to ladies at this age because of bone weakness like osteoporosis and many other causes. So age also matters, so she needs to take lots of nutritious food, fruits, vegetables and greens. Yoga also helps to cure back ache and leg tightness, you can teach her if you know yoga exercise, which would definitely help your mother overcome this problem. So tell her it is not related to paralysis. Take care of your mom.

I'm 19 years old, and even though I don't feel nervous or fear or any other emotions, than why do my hands tremble?

I'm 19 years old, and even though I don't feel nervous or fear or any other emotions, than why do my hands tremble?
Dear lybrate-user. For social anxiety disorder, hand shaking is enough. There may not be any other symptoms like nervousness or fear. Social anxiety disorder treatment consists of cognitive behavioral therapy, life style changes, relaxation therapy and meditation. Once you learn how to manage your anxiety yourself with the help of the above treatment methods, you will be cured. The process could take some time according to the depth of the problem and the circumstances at which the patient lives. Take care.

Hello Sir, I am 25 years old male. And I have been suffering from severe back pain, neck stiffness, sometimes headach...
Ankylosing spondylitis is a type of arthritis that affects the spine. Ankylosing spondylitis symptoms include pain and stiffness from the neck down to the lower back. The spine's bones (vertebrae) may grow or fuse together, resulting in a rigid spine. These changes may be mild or severe, and may lead to a stooped-over posture. Early diagnosis and treatment helps control pain and stiffness and may reduce or prevent significant deformity.
