My parents are diabetics and my question is related to diabetes, is it OK to give them masala oats (kellogs, saffola, quaker.) to eat, I have heard oats are good for health but don't know about its sugar content, please suggest.

Hello, Thanks for the query. Oats are good because they contain fibers, which help in reducing glucose absorption or delay the absorption. However, Kelog's Oats contain 106 calories for 30 g oats, which is quite high. Simple oats are better than the ones mentioned. Thanks.

Mr. lybrate-user, Thanks for the query. Both glucose levels are high, suggesting present treatment is not adequate. Premeal means is it fasting level or just before the meal? Ideally fasting glucose should be < 100 mg, PP 150 to 170 mg & HbA1c% < 6.8. Thanks.

Hypothyroid and latest test showed normal free T3 and T4 and Tsh was 8.5. Now on 50 mcg thyroxine. Previous test showed prolactin levels to be 29.8 and just completed 30 days course of MCBM 69 and B-Long. On cycle day 42 today and sexually active, no sign so early pregnancy and haven't taken a HPT yet. What is your advice? When should I repeat my tests?

Lybrate-user, if you are having hypothyroidism and taking treatment, then it is essential to bring tsh levels down to <2 mu/l, otherwise conception may not occur. Further through out pregnancy tsh should be maintained as follows: 1st trimester 0.1 to 2 mu/l, 2nd trimester 0.3 to 3 mu/l & 3rd trimester 0.3 to 3.1 mu/l. If tsh levels go higher than above mentioned, then fetal development is affected, miscarriage may occur, pregnancy out come at full term may not good. So please take care of the tsh levels. Thanks.

Mt TSH level is around 8.3 even though I have been taking thyroxine 75 mg regularly in the morning on empty stomach for the last 8 months. I am 43 years old female. I haven't got my periods since the last 42 days. Kindly advice.

Lybrate-user, tsh 8.3 milli units/l means hypothyroidism is not in control. Dose has to go up from 75 mcg to 87, 5 mcg then tsh level has to be checked after 6 weeks to see if the dose taken is adequate or needs any further increase. Menstruation may not have occurred because high tsh. Thanks.

Hello, You cannot escape diabetes, as it is not a disease but it is a disorder. By following a good diet and maintaining ideal body weight and exercising regularly, you can reduced the chances, of getting it. Unexplained thirst, frequent urination, unexplained weight loss, excessive, hunger, lethargyness are some, underlying symptoms, but sometimes it can, just be asymptomatic.

My father has diabetes now he is suffering from cough two to 3 days. He is not getting well.
Mr. Lybrate-user, is his blood sugar well controlled with fasting around 100 mg, pp 150 to160 mg/100 ml, hba1c% <7. If the sugar is not well controlled then he may become more susceptible to any infection. What is the current treatment for cough? he may need an antibiotic for respiratory infection, which is the possible cause of cough. In this communication we are supposed to give only general guidelines and no specific drugs.
