Tsh value of 5.03 milli units/l, is just above the normal limit. This condition is called as sub clinical hypothyroidism. Usually no treatment is advised. Overt hypothyroidism is considered when tsh level crosses 10 milli units/l. The precautions to be taken include avoiding soy beans, soy containing products, cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, peanuts, radish, mustard and coffee. Use whole grain flour for roti and chapati. Plus consume more of green leafy vegetables, salads and fruits (all types of fruits). In addition daily 1 hour exercise is a must. That will help inremaining fit and healthy. No medicine is required for now. Thanks for the question.

Hi Lybrate-user there are two types of vaccination available for Pneumonia in adults. Pneumococcal vaccine (type 13 and 23). This has to be given once in 5 years. Influenza virus vaccine. This has to be given Every year. There are no blood tests recommended for routine TB analysis. Though one test IGRA is used abroad for screening for TB it's use in INdia where TB prevalenc is high is questionable.

Hi, I have thyroid and also have problem of hair loss and i am very over weight. What you suggest for me the best.

MBBS, MD - Internal Medicine
Internal Medicine Specialist, Faridabad
Hi, I have thyroid and also have problem of hair loss and i am very over weight. What you suggest for me the best.
Take diet for hypothyroidism:- high-carbohydrate foods such as potatoes, rice, pasta and bread, nutrient-rich foods that improve your health may also benefit your thyroid gland, antioxidant-rich fruits and vegetables more plenty of water: blueberries, tomatoes, bell peppers, and other foods rich in antioxidants can improve overall health and benefit the thyroid gland. Eating foods high in b vitamins, like whole grains, may also help. Flax oil, selenium: tiny amounts of selenium are needed for enzymes that make thyroid hormones to work properly. Eating selenium-rich foods, such as sunflower seeds or brazil nuts, can be beneficial. Tyrosine: this amino acid is used by the thyroid gland to produce t3 and t4. Taking a supplement may help, avoid few foods in hypothroidism i. E. Caffeine products tea, coffee, tabcco, alcohol / wine, kale, broccoli, spinach, mustard green, cabbage, turnip, millet, cassava, linseeds, pine nuts, soy products as soy milk, tofu, soybeans, soy souce, also avoid stress. Take some relax during work. Proper follow up you can feel better and reduce weight also. Use hair oil minoxidil for hair fall.

My brother is facing thyroid problem with T3-112, T4-7.6,TSH-121.88 and is taking Thyroxine Sodium Tablets I.P. 50 mcg daily one and he is facing with white hairs so please suggest for the solution.

MBBS, CCEBDM, Diploma in Diabetology, Diploma in Clinical Nutrition & Dietetics, Cetificate Course In Thyroid Disorders Management (CCMTD)
Endocrinologist, Hubli-Dharwad
Hello, Thanks for the query. I have gone through the details given, TSH 121.88 is too high, suggesting totally uncontrolled hypothyroidism. Looking at that value, 50 mcg of thyroxine appears very much inadequate. There is no clear mention of the patients age, weight and height, for suggesting the right dosage. When one is on adequate dose of thyroxine, TSh is maintained between 3 to 4 mU/L, and all the symptoms are in good control. Thanks.

Can diabetic patient take lemon with honey in warm water daily morning? Please clarify. Thanks.
Dear lybrate-user, you are not advised to take honey with warm water. Honey contains 70 calories 10 time sugar. As a diabetic patient carry on your medicines and have physical exercise 30 minutes morning. Take 100% safe ayurveda drugs to control your sugar level. Be attentive to your daily foods. Ok.

Gastrointestinal Complications of Diabetes!

D ( Diabetology), AFIH, DNB (F.MEDICINE), MBBS
General Physician, Pune
Gastrointestinal Complications of Diabetes!

Diabetes is a systemic disease that affects almost every part of your body. Of these, the digestive system is the most badly affected. While gastrointestinal disorders are commonly experienced by everyone, diabetics have a much higher risk of suffering from indigestion, food poisoning, gallstones and ulcers. Some of the most common gastrointestinal problems experienced by diabetics are:

  1. Gastroparesis: High blood sugar levels can damage the vagus nerve that controls the emptying of the stomach. As a result fo this damage, the muscles of the stomach and intestines do not work optimally leading to a condition known as Gastroparesis. This is a condition where the stomach is not able to empty itself properly and the digestion process is slowed down. Gastroparesis can cause bloating, nausea, pain in the abdomen, heart burn and a loss of appetite. It can also cause undigested food in the stomach to harden and form lumps that block food from moving into the intestines. This disease cannot be cured but can be managed with medication and a special diet.
  2. Ulcers: Stomach ulcers can be described as open sores that develop on the inner lining of the stomach, oesophagus and beginning of the small intestine. These ulcers form as a result of bacterial infections. Diabetes weakens a person’s immune system thus reducing their ability to fight these infections and increasing the risk of developing ulcers. Diabetes also increases the risk of bleeding from these ulcers and secondary infections that may arise from it.
  3. Yeast infections: Diabetics are extremely vulnerable to yeast infections. This is aggravated by fluctuation in blood sugar levels and can extend from the mouth to the oesophagus. Common symptoms of this type of yeast infection are pain in the throat and difficulty swallowing. It may also cause heartburn and intestinal bleeding if left untreated.
  4. Celiac sprue: This condition creates gluten allergies and causes the inflammation and thinning of the small intestine’s mucosa. In some cases, this condition may interfere with the absorption of food and lead to diarrhoea and weight loss.
  5. Diabetic diarrhoea: Patients who have been suffering from diabetes for a few years may experience an increased urge to pass stools frequently. This is usually related to gastric problems in the colon which cause fluids to move at a faster than normal speed through the small bowel and colon. It may also be caused due to the secretion of fluids in the colon and improper absorption of food.
