Dear lybrate user here I can give some advice regarding diet and exercise. 1. Avoid food and drink containing sugar, eg chocolate, sweets, ice creams. 2. Restrict fried foods, fast foods, paapad, potato-wada etc 3. Eat in moderation of these; chapati, rice, meat, eggs, fish, cheese, milk products. 4. Eat plenty of salads, greenleafy vegetables, fruits, pulses, clear soups. 5. Take small meals 3-4 tms a day instead of heavy one time meals. 6. Take aerobic exercises or brisk walking for abt 3-4km. 7. Avoid heavy exercises may lead to hypoglycaemia. 8. Do yoga and meditation for about 30mnts every day which enhances quality of your life.

hi, I am a registered dietitian, certified diabetes educator and a doctor (general physician) who will help you in your diabetes problem. Do let me know your hba1c value? also you need to provide me your daily food intake details. There are many lifestyle and dietary guidelines that can be followed: take high fiber prescribed diet which includes soluble fibre like apple, isabgol etc. Get more physical activity by prescription from a registered dietitian maintain a healthy body weight eat a balanced diet which includes whole grains and excludes all refined products like maida as prescribed by a registered dietitian, if you're overweight, diabetes prevention may hinge on weight loss. Every pound you lose can improve your health, and you may be surprised by how much. Participants in one large study who lost a modest amount of weight around 7 percent of initial body weight and exercised regularly reduced the risk of developing diabetes by almost 60 percent. I being a registered dietitian and doctor have been successfully helping patients with their diabetes problem. I will also prescribe medicines that will speed up the time to achieve your weight management goals. Do reply back for private consultation.

Bhanushreeji, Thanks for the query. Following are the criteria to decide about diabetes : 1)Normal : Fasting blood glucose :70 to 110 mg/100ml, PP<140 mg, HbA1c%<5.9. 2)Pre-diabetic state: FBG108 to 125 mg, PP 141 to 199 mg & HbA1c%5.9 to 6.4. 3)Diabetes :FBG:126 mg and above, PP 200 mg and above,& HBA1c% 6.5 and above. Hence you are not in a prediabetic state. But it always good to avoid bakery items or other foods made out of maida. Taking healthy diet always pays off. Tea, coffee are fine. Similarly there is no need to avoid rice. What is needed is total moderation in diet. But better to avoid too much of sweets, deep fried foods, jnuk foods and pastries. Increased intake of green leafy vegetables and fruits is healthy. Plus maintaining normal body weight (about 58 kgs) is necessary to prevent becoming diabetic. A daily exercise of 1 hour should also be very good habit. Thanks.

Ayurveda and Hypothyroidism

Bachelor of Ayurveda, Medicine and Surgery (BAMS)

Ayurveda and Hypothyroidism

Almost all the metabolic processes in a person's body are influenced by the hormones produced by the thyroid gland. The most common types of thyroid diseases caused due to dysfunctional thyroid glands are Thyroid nodules, Hypothyroidism, Hyperthyroidism, Goiter, Thyroiditis, and Thyroid Cancer.

Hypothyroidism is when the thyroid gland is underactive and the amount of hormones produced is insufficient. Hypothyroidism can be caused due to multiple reasons such as iodine deficiency, radiation or surgery on the thyroid gland, and drugs such as lithium and phenylbutazone. You should note that treating thyroid is not a speedy process and a reoccurrence of symptoms might also take place. However with the appropriate remedies and proper diet control, one can make sure that these symptoms are less pronounced.

Ayurveda: According to Ayurveda, imbalance or disequilibrium in the doshas is the main cause of hypothyroidism. The Kapha dosha i.e. the dosha responsible for body fluids and lubrication and Pitta dosha i.e. the dosha responsible for fire and water body humors, are vitiated. Lifestyle and diet discrepancies further promote imbalances in the doshas. Hypothyroidism is categorized under the Yapya diseases which recur once you cease to take the treatment.

Treatments:

  1. It is essential to consume adequate quantities of milk.
  2. Apart from that, coconut oil is one of the best remedies for a hypothyroid patient, since it increases slow and sluggish metabolism. Coconut contains MCFAs i.e. medium chain fatty acids and MTCs i.e. Medium chain triglycerides in abundance which help the metabolism be revved up.
  3. Ayurvedic herbs useful for treating hypothyroidism are kanchnar, Bauhinia variegata i.e. purple mountain ebony, Jatamansi, brahmi, guggulu, shilajit, gokshura, and punarnava.

Remedies:

  1. Consume a mixture of Indian gooseberry i.e. amla churna with honey, daily before breakfast.
  2. One of the main causes of Hypothyroidism is insufficient amount of iodine. Drinking the juice acquired from jalakumbhi i.e. Pistia Stratiotes everyday in doses amounting from 11gm to 22gm increases the iodine content and helps treat hypothyroidism.

What should be an ideal diet for 50 year male with activity living habit who is suffering from diabetics.

MBBS, CCEBDM, Diploma in Diabetology

What should be an ideal diet for 50 year male with activity living habit who is suffering from diabetics.
Mr. Lybrate-user, diet plan for a person with diabetes is not very different f than one for a normal person. He needs to take a balanced diet, with 50 to 55% of calories coming from carbs, 15% from proteins & 25 to 30 % from fats. But major difference is in relation to type of foods. He should avoid sweets, deep fried foods, junk foods, pastries, other bakery items, sweetened aerated drinks (colas), fructose corn syrup containing foods, highly processed food products and high fat milk products. He should consume more of green leafy vegetables, salads and permitted fruits (100 g a day). Always use whole grain products and flour. Use more of millets and fiber containing seeds like flax seeds, fenugreek etc. As regards a specific diet plan for you I need to know following details: 1) fasting & pp glucose levels, hbac1%, 2) present drugs with dosage, 3) extent of daily exercise & 4) present diet pattern. You will have to plan caloric intake based on above and ideal body weight (72 kgs). Thanks.

Faisalji, Hypothyroidism treatment has to be continued for life time. Taking drugs for 2 months and stopping will not be beneficial. You should avoid soya beans, soya containing products, cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, radish, peanuts, mustard and coffee. Always usw whole grain flour for making chapati and roti. ( no maida). Consume more of green leafy vegetables, and fresh fruits ( all fruits are OK). Exercise regularly so that weight gain is avoided.

I am having thyroid and I was asked by the doctor to take thyronorm 50 mg. On the 3 rd day of starting the medicines I noticed that. Every morning I wake up n spit. I see blood in it. Is that because of the medicines?

MBBS, CCEBDM, Diploma in Diabetology
Endocrinologist, Hubli-Dharwad
Mr Chandan, Thyroxine tablets do not cause such effect at all. Do you have any cough or throat infection? There may be some different reason for blood that may have been noticed.

I am a 54 years old male working as a clerk with bsnl. My parents are diabetic and takes insulin two times a day. I am regularly walking for an hour not taking any sweets and taking zoryil m1 11/2 tab morning and 1 tab at night. But still my fasting sugar is 242 today how can I control my sugar level I am not having bp or cholestrol. I am 6.1" tall and my weight 90kg.

C.S.C, D.C.H, M.B.B.S
General Physician,
It is not as easy task to control blood sugar in the desired normal range. Whatever we eat is metabolised to sugar in the body to provide energy for our daily activities. For the absolute control, one has to monitor his / her blood sugar at regular intervals (self-monitoring of blood glucose? smbg). Though difficult, this can be done by a glucometer and keep a record. Get an idea of fasting sugar (fbs) and 2 hours after food (ppbs) and check before dinner and after every major food. The basic idea is to reduce the food intake to 1/3 of what you take now. The dictum of sugar control is diet, exercise, diet + medicine and at later stage medicine+ insulin will be needed. For sugar control there is the need for regular advice and follow up. Just one time consultation or advice is not enough to guide a diabetic in scientifically & medically correct manner. For giving you regular follow up you ask me privately with all details like your daily eating pattern and medicines you take. I assure you a proper guidance. If you keep in touch.

For a diabetic it is best advised to have a diet planned as per the sugar levels, lifestyle and history. You have to initially take the medicines to bring the sugar levels down. Once you are able to manage sugar levels you can taper off the medication dose. Also you are not advised to start any exercise till your sugar levels don't come down. Though you can follow some guidelines - have small frequent meals. Do not fast for long hours. Avoid a very heavy meal at one time. Avoid fruit juices, aerated drinks or sugarcane juice, honey, jaggery or sugar. Avoid junk foods. Exercise and stay active. Do not attempt to try out too many remedies as you could go into hypoglycaemia. Sleep well. It's all a matter of discipline.

Mr. Lybrate-user, with 116 kg weight you have a grade 3 obesity, that is the major problem. It is possible that uncontrolled hypothyroidism may have been the reason for triggering and increasing obesity. But now your primary objective is tackle obesity. For that hypothyroidims has to be strictly controlled with tsh levels should be maintained between 3 to 4 milli units / l. Then there has to be strict dietary control to be observed and regular exercise regimen. You should aim at cutting about 8 to 10 % of present weight. It is possible, only if you are prepared mentally. Thanks.

Your glucose levels are well above the normal range- qualifying you as a diabetic. Unfortunately, diabetic symptoms are not standardised and not all patients suffer from the symptoms. The most important information for diagnosis is the glucose level which you have just shared here. Hence, without any doubt- please plan your further treatment for diabetes.
