8 Tips For Your Dog This Summer!

MVSc (Ph.D pursuing)
Veterinarian, Hyderabad

1. Make sure your dog has unlimited access to fresh water all the time.

2. Make sure your dog has access to shade when outside.

3. Take walks during the cooler hours of the day. Avoid 5-7 pm evening as the steam emitting from the road can kill your pet with heat stroke!

4. When walking, try to stay off of hot surfaces (like coal tar roads) because it can burn your dog's paws.

5. If you feel it's hot outside, it's even hotter for your pet - make sure your pet has a means of cooling off.

6. Keep your dog free of external insects (fleas, ticks) - consult your veterinarian about the best product for your pet.

7. Consider clipping or shaving dogs with long coats (talk to your veterinarian first to see if it's appropriate for your pet).

8. If you have a short nose breed like pugs or bulldogs, keep a Turkish towel with you whenever traveling. Whenever you notice he/she is panting heavily, you can soak the towel in water and wrap it around his body to have a local cooling effect.

Hello dear Lybrate user, hi Warm welcome to Lybrate.com I have evaluated your query for your pet dog thoroughly. Keep the wound clean with antiseptic liquid as dettol or savlon 3 times a day. Take care that there should not be any accumulation of dust or mud over that part. Apply Neosporin skin ointment 2 times a day, apply dressing over that. Consult later animal doctor for certain medicines to make it heal faster. Hope this clears your query. Wishing your cuty fine recovery. Can use my private URL for private consultation at Lybrate.com https://www.Lybrate.com/gandhinagar/doctor/dr-bhagyesh-patel-general-surgeonĀ  Welcome for any further assistance. Regards take care.

For my dog eyes are closing when she will sleep and getup why?Any medicine is there for that problem can you tell me.

MVSc, BVSc
Veterinarian,
Please check if there is any discharge from the eyes? Are the eyes red? Is the dog rubbing eyes with her paws sometimes? Please get her checked from a vet. If i' m getting you right, it could be spasms of the eyelids and may need some topical anti-inflammatory meds. Hope this is helpful.

I have 3 puppies. They used to play together. They drink water in same bowl. They bite each other while playing. My one puppy died due to rabies. Should my other two puppies have gotten rabies from him?

MBBS
General Physician, Mumbai
Rabies is an infectious disease and vaccination needs to be given to all the puppies and house family members and you will have to inform the municipal authorities

My dog is 5 years old and it is a street dog, he is suffering from cough from last one week. Please Suggest can we give him some cough syrup?

M.V.Sc. & PhD Scholar Veterinary Medicine
Veterinarian, Navi Mumbai
Hello, As your pet is suffering from cough, i'll suggest you to get him checked by nearby vet and also a xray examination. This will help you to know the exact reason for coughing. As their are many etiological factors for coughing, only symptomatic treatment with cough syrup is not advisable. So get a proper advice from a vet after complete examination of your pet. Hope this information is helpful for you. Thank you.

My German shepherd aged about 5 years is not having food expect in evening. Today my mom gave him bath and noticed that on left ear edge a area about half a inch is swelling which seems like if some water like substance is in it. Also upper part of left eye is in same condition. Kindly help me in this regard with some effective medicines. Regards

MVSc, BVSc
Veterinarian,
Most shephards tend to eat once that too in the evenings, especially in summers. The ear thing you mentioned could be Aural hematoma, and the water like swelling could be accumulation of unclotted blood. Kindly visit your vet and explore treatment options. It can vary form puncturing the swelling and drain contents (a recurrent procedure), to surgical correction (depends on how extensive it is) or Homeopathy meds to reduce recurrence. Take care.

I have 3 year old female Indian dog. She has problem getting up after sitting and has been walking slower than her usual pace. Vet here gave nurokind pet syrup, calcium supplement and bone builder. Yet I don't see any improvement. It has been three days since this started. Please suggest something.

B.V.Sc. & A.H., MVS
Veterinarian, Ahmedabad
Start her on pain medication and joint supplement. You can give Pet Cam syrup - it has a measuring syringe marked according to the dog's body weight- give once a day upto the appropriate bodyweight mark. Also she will need joint supplements added to her food like Maxima or Megaflex powder 1 scoop daily. If she's not better in a week's time it may be necessary to get xrays and further diagnostic tests done.
