The Benefits of Sealants

BDS
Dentist, Mumbai
The Benefits of Sealants

Dental sealants act as a barrier to prevent cavities. They are a plastic material usually applied to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth (premolars and molars) where decay occurs most often.
Thorough brushing and flossing help remove food particles and plaque from smooth surfaces of teeth. But toothbrush bristles cannot reach all the way into the depressions and grooves to extract food and plaque. Sealants protect these vulnerable areas by 'sealing out' plaque and food.

Sealants are easy for your dentist to apply. The sealant is painted onto the tooth enamel, where it bonds directly to the tooth and hardens. This plastic resin bonds into the depressions and grooves (pits and fissures) of the chewing surfaces of back teeth.

The sealant acts as a barrier, protecting enamel from plaque and acids. As long as the sealant remains intact, the tooth surface will be protected from decay. Sealants hold up well under the force of normal chewing and may last several years before a reapplication is needed.

During your regular dental visits, your dentist will check the condition of the sealants and reapply them when necessary.
The likelihood of developing pit and fissure decay begins early in life, so children and teenagers are obvious candidates. But adults can benefit from sealants as well.

My upper tooth as cavity and inside it turned black color and I have a pain, whether it can be recovered by filling in the cavity or whether it's necessary for root canal treatment.

That depends on the severity of the decay and extent of pain. You need to get yourself examined by a dentist and then the course of treatment can be determined. If it's not too late, a normal filling can save your tooth.

Saving your Child's teeth Series : 3

Most of the children have decay today of their milk teeth. Sometimes, it is a very painful experience for the child and traumatic for the parents to see their child go through that pain and discomfort at that age. Do remember if your child's milk tooth or teeth are decayed - it will result in 2 problems later on:
a. Irregular teeth - which would require braces treatment later - possibly with extraction of few permanent teeth.
b. Decay on the permanent teeth - which erupt between 6 to 14 years of age.

So saving milk teeth is very important. Never breast feed or milk feed your child during passage to sleep or during sleep - AFTER 18 MONTHS of age.

In case of decay always get the same treated at the early stage than when the decay has destroyed the tooth badly. Always better to have a dental check up by 1st BIRTHDAY of the child.

Recently I had wisdom tooth (28 no) extraction using laser technology. But the extraction failed and only crown was removed and the rest half part is still there. My doctor has suggested me to wait for 3 to 6 month for supra eruption. But another doctor is suggesting me to remove the rest part as soon as possible. I am confused whether to wait or should I remove it early. Is it going to harm if I wait for such a long time?

As you said only the crown portion was removed, that means its removal intotal would involve a bigger surgical procedure. So be ready for reopening, jaw bone removal and stitches before going for the same. My advice is to wait and watch and get further treatment only in trouble. We have seen a few of the patients who suffer from pain unless whole of the tooth portion is removed, but at the same time we have experienced uncountable number of our patients and the ones who were treated elsewhere, who did not have any problems in the same situation. Anyways do have the medicines if suggested.

Hi lybrate-user. The yellow layer you saw is tartar. It cannot be removed by brushing but has to be removed by a dentist with professional cleaning.

Sugary foods should be consumed in limited quantities as the bacteria in dental plaque changes them into acids.
