How to Treat Fungal Nail Infections?

How to Treat Fungal Nail Infections?

Nail fungus is a very common problem. Symptoms include inflammation, swelling, yellowing, thickening or crumbling of the nail. It is usually not painful, unless the infection spreads. If left untreated, nail fungus can cause cracking, splitting and even complete loss of the nail. The good news is that nail fungus is curable and can be treated very easily. There are many specialized treatments required for bringing quickest recovery. Most people think that medications are the only solution in this regard, but this is not true as there are many therapies that are needed along with medicines so that speed of recovery can be boosted to a great extent.

Treatments for fungal nail infections:

  1. Antifungal medications: Nails are first tested thoroughly in order to get the confirmation about nail fungus. Both growth and reproduction of fungal cells are prevented by consuming these medications. Some of these medicines are used for topical or external application while others are taken orally. Some of the physicians suggest continuing, both types of medicines simultaneously for getting more powerful effects and quick recovery. However, there are a few probable side-effects that occur while taking these medicines and these include loss in taste, rashes, diarrhoea, itching, headache and others.
  2. Using antifungal nail-paint: Nowadays, you can use antifungal nail-paints so that the deepest layer of the nail can be well treated and infected parts can be healed quickly. But you have to continue the usage for a few months, or else, you will not be able to get the desirable results.
  3. Laser treatment: This treatment is one of the most powerful ones and can treat your infected nail with greater speed and accuracy. Light energy in high doses is used for treating nail infection in this case. The above treatments are really quite helpful, and you can choose any of them as per your necessity, preference and affordability.

Things you can do at home:

  1. Keep your hands and feet clean and dry
  2. Wear well fitting shoes made of natural materials and clean cotton socks, these will allow your feet to "breathe"
  3. Clip your nails to keep them short, use a separate pair of clippers or scissors for the infected nail
  4. Don't share towels and socks with other people, and ensure your towels are washed regularly
  5. Don't walk around barefoot in public pools, showers, and locker rooms, special shower shoes are available to protect your feet
  6. Consider replacing old footwear as it could be the source of the infection
  7. Treat athlete's foot as soon as possible to avoid the infection spreading to your nails

I am 23 years old. I have a problem of neck pain and hair fall. What should I do?

Vaidya Visharad
Ayurveda, Narnaul
Lubricate your hair. Using a moisturizer greatly reduces the chances of split ends and promotes hair growth by diminishing breakage. However, to avoid overtly oily hair, use only a little moisturizer or try lubricating your hair a couple of hours before hair wash. Moisturized hair will attract dust if you go out.

Are there any harmful effects of masturbation. Could you please tell. Because everyone gives different views about masturbation. And I am confused.

PDDM, MHA, MBBS
General Physician, Nashik
Masturbation is regarded as a normal, healthy sexual activity. In general, the medical community considers masturbation to be a natural and harmless expression of sexuality for both men and women. It does not cause any physical injury or harm to the body, and can be performed in moderation throughout a person's lifetime as a part of normal sexual behavior. It will not affect you or your ability to have children in the future. If you wish to reduce the frequency of masturbation: It originates from brain, due to thinking about sex. Hence: ·     Do not watch adult material. ·     Concentrate more on your studies or work. ·     Exercise regularly.

Hello sir, i'm rajneesh. Sir i've a running nose for last 2 years. I wanted to know what could be the reason and what are the medicines to cure it. Waiting for your valuable reply. Thankyou.

MBBS
Oncologist, Bangalore
Hello , you might be having allergic rhinitis, in which you'll be allergic to some dust, pollen etc. Whenever you get exposed to such allergens (allergic substances) you'll have running nose. Take tab cetrezine 10mg twice daily to reduce symptoms. Try to wear a mask whenever you go out or when exposed to dust. Identifying the specific allergen to which you may be allergic is a difficult task. Even after taking the above tablet if your symptoms persists, you can consult me privately on lybrate for further treatment plans. Take care.

I'm 17 years old and my face gets tanned too fast. By that reason I'm facing wrinkles on my face in this early age. Please tell me how can I get my old soft and supple face?

Use AHA glow face wash daily and apply sunscreen daily. At bedtime use a good night cream for repair. Please take a healthy diet, wrinkles at this age are unheard of so it is directly related to poor nutrition.

Hi, I use phone every day due to this my skin facing some abnormalities that is it becoming dark I thought it is happing due to phone so pls tell me a soon to to become fairer.

PDDM, MHA, MBBS
General Physician, Nashik
In order to enhance your skin you need to take care of your skin from outside. You may use a cream or moisturizer that contains Alpha Hydroxy Acid's (AHA's) like glycolic acid, lactic acid etc. AHA's exfoliate superficial dead skin cells and renew it with newer younger cells. Continued use of AHA's keeps skin in a state of continued renewal. This renewed skin is healthier, lighter and brighter. You may also opt for a few sessions of chemical peeling, particularly glycolic peel, from nearest approachable dermatologist. Glycolic peel utilizes a higher concentration of glycolic acid as compared to that present in creams/ moisturizers. The concentration that is available in peels is 20%, 35% 50% and 70%. Whereas creams contain just 6%, 8% or 10% of glycolic acid. I also suggest you to use a broad spectrum sunscreen, throughout the day. It should have both UVA as well as UV B coverage. Regular use of broad spectrum sunscreen would prevent tanning and also delay skin ageing i.e appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Some sunscreens are also fortified with vitamin C which has skin lightening as well as antiageing properties. Besides topical creams and chemical peeling sessions you may also take a few sessions of microdermabrasion to achieve the desired results. I suggest you to visit a dermatologist in your vicinity for more details and the needful. Regards.

I am a 28 years old and I have back pain for last 1 years, what should I do? Please advise.

Dip. SICOT (Belgium), MNAMS, DNB (Orthopedics), MBBS
Orthopedist, Delhi
Hi thanks for your query and welcome to lybrate. You are very young to actually have persistent back pains. If you have localized back pain with no other symptoms like radiating leg pain, neurological symptoms like numbness, weakness, paresthesias etc, then you can start with following recommendations for initial period of 2-3 weeks: - to maintain proper posture of your back while working and sleeping - if pain is more then you can take a short course of an anti-inflammatory medication like tab etoshine or paracetamol or one which suits you - physical therapy initially under supervision of a trained physiotherapist and then to continue at home - adequate calcium & vitamin d intake if levels are low in body - ice packs can applied if your pain is acute, then hot fomentation can be done at home - analgesic spray for local application can be used and is easily available. - avoid lifting heavyweight/ acute forward bending in mornings etc we will observe you for next 2-3 weeks how you respond to this conservative management protocol. If you are not feeling better, then we will have to get some investigations like, dynamic x rays of lower back and few blood tests for evaluation. Do not hesitate to contact me if you need any further assistance. You can also discuss your case and treatment plans with me in a greater detail in a private consultation.

Noodles and pasta are rich in calories and have high amount of carbohydrates. They are easy to make and also saves cooking time. If you are a non-vegetarian, you can also add lean chicken and a lot of vegetables to the noodles and pasta that will convert it into a high calorie and nutritious food and provide you essential minerals and proteins.

I had my normal delivery using tools. And My newborn baby had its jaundice test when she was 5 days old and the bilirubin levels were high, so she was in phototherapy for 4 days. And as the doctor said it came to normal level, we was discharged. But now as she is 15 days old. I could still see her eyes are pale Yellow sometimes. Some said it is normal and will fade as she grows. But then am panicked. Is it normal? What should be concerned?

MBBS, MD, DM - Neonatology
Pediatrician, Delhi
Eye clearance would take about 1 month, last site of clearance. Just recheked her Total serum bilirubin with blood or Transcutaneous bilirubinometer (a non prick techneque), If it is below phototherapy level, no need to worry.

I wake up in the morning around 5 AM and go about my chores for going to the office, including making my black coffee, half an hour's exercise, shave and bath. Between 5 & 7 AM I am terribly depressed every day and do not want to go to the office. I long for the nights and I hit the bed at around 10 PM and generally, I sleep well. Once in a week/10 days, I have to pop in half Calmpose. I consume hard drinks (a quarter bottle, i.e. 3-4 pegs) atleast two times in a week. Once I reach the office, I am completely engrossed in my work, which is mostly on the computer. I am about 56 years of age. My boss in office is not an easy person to work and the organization is also not a good one which, in fact, is the impression of many of my colleagues, both about the office and the boss. But we can't leave as we have a couple of years left. As for me, personally, I was divorced about 15 years and am not in touch with my former wife and only daughter. I have not remarried and am living with my elder brother and his family and our mother. Saturdays and Sundays are holidays and I am mostly at home and seldom go out. Please advise if I am in some kind of a depression?

MD Psychiatry
Psychiatrist, Chennai
It is difficult to tell from the above information alone. It is better if you meet a psychiatrist and explain your problems in detail. He may be able to clarify your doubts and offer suggestions if necessary. In some people depression may be mild but lasts for years together and hence reduces the quality of life.
