Muscular Dystrophy -  Ways You Can Take Care Of Your Child!

If your kid is affected by Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD), it is important for you to know about the best ways of dealing with the condition. Muscular dystrophy consists of group of diseases, which result in the weakening of muscles along with reduced flexibility. DMD accounts for being the most common type of muscular dystrophy. It occurs because of flaws in the gene, which controls how your body keeps the muscles healthy. This disease affects boys and the symptoms start appearing from early childhood.

Treatment
There is no specific treatment for DMD. However, there are several ways, including medicines and therapy, to deal with the symptoms and to protect the muscles.

  1. Several steroids such as prednisone help in slowing down muscle damage. Children taking this medicine are able to walk for two to five years longer than they would usually do. Lung and heart functions are also improved.
  2. DMD leads to heart problems and hence, you should take your child to a heart doctor for regular checkups until the age of 10.
  3. In some cases, a surgery may be required to fix their shortened muscles, for straightening the spine, or for treating a heart or lung problem.

Taking care of your child

If your child has DMD, it does not mean that he will have to refrain from activities such as school, sports and spending time with friends. By sticking to the right treatment plan, you will be able to make your child active.

  1. Stand and walk: Being in an upright position will keep your child’s bones strong and the spine straight. You can get your child braces or standing walkers, which will help him in terms of balance and mobility.
  2. Eat right: Although there is no special diet for DMD, several food items should be taken for preventing problems related to weight. Your child should eat the proper amount of food with a proper balance of nutrients and calories regularly.
  3. Stay active: You should ensure that your child exercises regularly. Regular stretching exercises help in keeping the muscles and joints limber, which makes him feel better. You can avail the help of a physical therapist for an exercise schedule.

You can look for and join local support groups associated with DMD, as other families living with DMD can be a source of good advice and understanding about life with DMD. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can ask a free question.

If back pain is persistent from three months then it will not heal by mere taking the pain killers. We need to identify the cause to treat it, it could be a problem as minor as a spasm, but it needs proper method of treatment and precautions. I would suggest you to see an orthopedic surgeon, who can guide you regarding the restrictions of movements, permitted movements and exercises. X-ray is often an investigation of choice. Wish you a speedy recovery.

While playing cricket we throw balls but while throwing I don't feel power in that and after throwing the shoulder pains a lot for e.g. As if my should is cut down. That kind of pain. I thought of resting for a month will take care but still it has not and now it is being more than 2 months. Need help as to how I can get my shoulder working as normal.

Firstly you should start with active exercises for shoulder in slow motion. Do the strengthening exercises for all your muscles of the shoulder. Then you should do stretching and make sure you gradually progress to light weights. These are resisted exercises which will help you to build up strength. Shoulder is a very important joint in the body as it can perform a lot of movements. Do not ignore the exercises make sure you do these exercises everyday at twice a day. Infact a physiotherapist can help you to to train you with the exercises because your a player you do it the right way so that you can get back onto the field soon. Important notice kindly take rest during your sessions of exercises atleast for 10 days because doing the exercises can cause a little pain and then when you go back to the feild and play and exercises the pain will not reduce. Hello lybrate user knee pain due to obesity is a common major problem. Because hip, knee &ankle joints are weight bearing joints and knee is most movable joint during household works or other physical activities. Mostly due to adapted sedentary life style physical workout like cycling, walking &running are not part of our daily routine. She must try to reduce weight by some sitting position exercise, take high fiber diet, add salad or juicy fruits in diet, plenty of water intake, etc. Don't afraid from surgery" surgery" means patient become independent and pain-free joints, easy to perform her/his daily living activities. Before surgery ankle&hip joints exercises to improve strength of joints, knee joints too, especially flexor and extensor muscle exercises to increase muscle power regular for two months. Then surgery will be successful. After surgery regular one month exercises of knee joint will help to relax the muscle and increase efficiency.

Three Ways to Protect Your Knees

The knee is known as the largest and one of the most complex joints in the human body, and also one of the most vulnerable, as it supports the weight of the entire body. The knee joint is made up of several elements including the knee cap, meniscus, connective tissue, tendons, ligaments, cartilage, and muscles. Damage to any part of the knee can cause chronic pain. So how can you protect your knee from damage and injury? Take a look at these three points!

Dealing with Load: Weight is a big one. Carrying around extra pounds and kilograms can be detrimental for your knees in the long run. Your knee is not equipped to handle the excessive weight. It already supports three to five times your weight when you get up and walk around or indulge in some mild jogging. One must be careful of those extra pounds to take the load off the knee and keep it from falling prey to damage.
Exercise: Moderate to intense exercise is prescribed for one and all. This, of course, depends on one's overall health and age. If you are already suffering from joint pain, then you may want to go easy on the exercise with a focus on building muscle strength and foundation. If you are healthy, then some amount of daily exercise as a routine will keep those knees in prime working condition and well lubricated as well. Inactivity and a sedentary lifestyle can affect the knees very badly.

Do not Ignore: Warning signals such as chronic or acute knee pain should not be ignored. Remember to see a doctor or an orthopaedic specialist to find out if you have contracted an infection or if you may have suffered a fracture due to an injury. Also, it is important to take a bone density test regularly, especially after the age of 40 or for women going through menopause, as this will point to any deficiencies and even warn you in case there is any trace of osteoporosis.

Rest, exercise, and food should be kept in fine balance for a healthy body. These are a few measures that one can take to keep knee pain at bay. Yet, it is also advisable to speak with a doctor at length regarding measures to protect your knees.
