All about Metrorrhagia

Fellowship In Minimal Access Surgery, MS - Obstetrics and Gynaecology, MBBS
Gynaecologist, Hyderabad
All about Metrorrhagia

Metrorrhagia is a medical condition in which uterine bleeding occurs regularly or irregularly outside the normal menstrual cycle. Generally Metrorrhagia occurs due to hormone disorders or any other such irregularities. It could also be an indicator of some serious health issues such as endometriosis, cancer of reproductive organs or uterine fibroids. Read on more to find all about them.

Causes
Metrorrhagia can occur due to a number of reproductive disorders as well as certain diseases. Syphilis, infection, malignancy, pregnancy and many more are listed as the reasons behind Metrorrhagia. Metrorrhagia can be a serious issue as it can be painful, irritating and a major inconvenience.

Risk factors
Metrorrhagia is a medical condition which might be due to certain disorders or medical conditions the patient might be suffering from. They are mentioned as follows:

  1. Hormone related: Irregular uterine bleeding can occur due to hypothyroidism, adrenal deficiency and low progesterone. Metrorrhagia in such situations can be resolved if suitable treatment is administered in the right time and for that, correct diagnosis is absolutely important.
  2. Reproductive related: Endometrial hyperplasia and endometriosis and such other reproductive disorders or diseases could be a cause for Metrorrhagia. In such cases, early diagnosis is absolutely recommended for a speedy and complete recovery.
  3. Benign Tumors: Certain benign tumors like ovarian cysts and fibroids can also cause irregular uterine bleeding. Though benign, a physician should be consulted immediately for a speedy recovery as Metrorrhagia in itself can prove to be critical.
  4. Malignant Tumors: Ovarian cancer and endometrial cancer can also be a reason for the cause of Metrorrhagia. In such a condition early diagnosis and treatment is highly essential for a full recovery.

Treatment
If the patient is suffering from Metrorrhagia, then they are advised to consult a physician as Metrorrhagia could be a sign of something more serious. Depending on the diagnosis the doctor can prescribe medications or if necessary, certain surgical procedures. Some of the medications and surgeries which can be prescribed by your physician include oral contraceptive pills, progesterone pills or injections, endometrial ablation and hysterectomy among others.

There are times in a life of a woman when she misses her menses. You may avoid taking too much non-vegetarian food. Take fresh fruits like papaya, grapes, anjeer etc. You may take vegetables like carrot, radish, coriander. You can take aloevera and jaggery too. Take proper sleep and manage your stress level.

Since your cycles are regular and you have tried only for 5 months I would suggest you to try naturally for another 6 7 months and if you don't conceive then get your self investigated. .rest about ovary ki swelling it could be due to infection most likely n not pcos. So send me your scan report then only will be able to tell you.

Washing genitals immediately after intercourse may be one of the reason for failing to conceive. Ask her to lie down with crossed legs for about 10-15 min after intercourse. If the menstrual cycle is normal, time period between 12th to 18th day have more chances of pregnancy.

Since you have cyst in your right ovary and also fibroid uterus, so you may take time in conceiving naturally. we would suggest you to go for an IUI or IVF rather than trying by naturally for long time. You can trying conceiving for 2-3 months during your ovulation days( i.e after 10th day of your cycle till 20th day), if not succeed then consult infertility specialist.

I had sex with my girlfriend on 18th May with protection, but was not sure about the condom. So she took Unwanted 72 on 20th May. She had bleeding on 21st May which continued for 3 days. She had her period on 14th May and ended on 17th May. To be sure, she had a pregnancy test on 28th June. The result was negative. She is perfectly fine but till now she did not have her period since then. Is she pregnant? Or is she having any problem? One more thing, she was having irregular periods before such incident. And this is the first time she had Unwanted 72. Please advice.

Hi Mr. Lybrate-user, as she had irregular periods previously also this pattern is due to hormonal imbalance. Mostly it's not pregnancy it is delayed period. Please get blood test called tsh, prolactin. To be doubly sure please get a serum bhcg test done to rule out pregnancy mostly it would be negative.
