All about Dengue

MD
General Physician, Gurgaon
All about Dengue
Dengue (deng-gey) fever is a mosquito-borne disease that occurs in tropical and subtropical areas of the world. Mild dengue fever causes high fever, rash, and muscle and joint pain. A severe form of dengue fever, also called dengue hemorrhagic fever, can cause severe bleeding, a sudden drop in blood pressure (shock) and death.

Millions of cases of dengue infection occur worldwide each year. Dengue fever is most common in southeast asia and the western pacific islands, but the disease has been increasing rapidly in latin america and the caribbean.

Researchers are working on dengue fever vaccines. For now the best prevention is to reduce mosquito habitat in areas where dengue fever is common.

Symptoms:
Many people, especially children and teens, may experience no signs or symptoms during a mild case of dengue fever. When symptoms do occur, they usually begin four to 10 days after you are bitten by an infected mosquito. Signs and symptoms of dengue fever most commonly include:

Fever, as high as 106 f (41 c)
Headaches
Muscle, bone and joint pain
Pain behind your eyes
You might also experience:

Widespread rash
Nausea and vomiting
Rarely, minor bleeding from your gums or nose
Most people recover within a week or so. In some cases, symptoms worsen and can become life-threatening. Blood vessels often become damaged and leaky. And the number of clot-forming cells (platelets) in your bloodstream drops. This can cause:

Bleeding from your nose and mouth
Severe abdominal pain
Persistent vomiting
Bleeding under the skin, which might look like bruising
Problems with your lungs, liver and heart

Prevention:
If you are living or traveling in tropical areas where dengue fever is common, these tips may help reduce your risk of mosquito bites:

Stay in air-conditioned or well-screened housing. It's particularly important to keep mosquitoes out at night.
Reschedule outdoor activities. Avoid being outdoors at dawn, dusk and early evening, when more mosquitoes are out.
Wear protective clothing. When you go into mosquito-infested areas, wear a long-sleeved shirt, long pants, socks and shoes.
Use mosquito repellent. Permethrin can be applied to your clothing, shoes, camping gear and bed netting. You can also buy clothing made with permethrin already in it. For your skin, use a repellent containing at least a 10 percent concentration of deet.
Reduce mosquito habitat. The mosquitoes that carry the dengue virus typically live in and around houses, breeding in standing water that can collect in such things as used automobile tires. Reduce the breeding habitat to lower mosquito populations.

U might be suffering from anxiety, public phobia, inferiority compkex, low confidence status. To overcome all these, you need few sessions of councelling from psychologist.&they will try to exclude the origin/reason for your problem&will suggest few guide lines. You need to open up mentally very liberally to help them to find out the reason. Like your back ground, family environment, relations, attitude, way of thinking, any disappointments, shocks, low spirit abt what, fears, etc all.

Hello Madam/Sir, Greetings. My age is 31. I am married since three years and now trying to conceive from the last two months. we have sex during the 13th and 14th day after my periods. But failed to conceive. My periods are regular and my hormone levels are normal. My Gynaec gave me ovulation induction medicines for 3 months. I was unable to go for TVS for the first two months of medication and the third time I went for regular trans vaginal scan. My follicle was ready but she diagnosed polypoid endocervical thickening of 1.0 X 0.4 cm thickness and she stressed to do IUI and told that there is no chance of conceiving until the polyp is removed. Suggest me to get conceive. Thanking You.

Before jumping into IUI, your detailed work up must be done as well as your husband's semen analysis. Now, ''polypoid endocervical thickening'' is misnomer. We should exactly detect the problem. If there is big polyp or bleeding polyp, it should be removed. Otherwise, we can go for simple IUI. Wish you all the best.

Ideally at your age you should try 12 months before going for treatment. But if you are in hurry then both your and husband's tests have to be done. Your sex feeling is lost because you are too much anxious for pregnancy, relax more you become anxious more delay will be there.

6 Amazing Ways to Add Passion in Your Life

6 Amazing Ways to Add Passion in Your Life

According to research, 80% of women fail to reach the pinnacle of gratification during physical intimacy. Therefore, certain tips may come in handy for women when it comes to achieving an orgasm by making the man last longer.

  1. Indulge in foreplay: Foreplay is usually very helpful in making the man last longer than usual. According to a popular woman's magazine, alternating between the actual intercourse and foreplay might actually titillate the man's senses even more, which helps him last longer.
  2. Change positions: Changing positions frequently may also delay orgasm for the man, thus helping him to last longer. Certain positions are rather helpful in this regard, especially the ones which let the woman take charge of things in the bedroom.
  3. Take it slow: It might be useful for the couple to begin slowly and for the woman to take her time in exploring her partner's body. The idea here is to increase the pace gradually instead of getting too fast too soon.
  4. Try to take his mind off the action: It usually helps a man last longer in bed by taking his mind off the immediate act. This reduces the heightened levels of arousal, making him to last comparatively longer.
  5. Indulge in more "between the sheets" action: Having more sex causes the man to be more sexually experienced, thus making him out-last his previous standards.
  6. Some DIY can help you beat the clock: Masturbating more frequently increases a man's ability to hold off ejaculation. This habit, though in excess is bad for a man's libido, if practiced in moderation, can help him stretch his couch sessions. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a doctor and ask a free question.

Hi lybrate-user. Sometimes hormonal disturbances can also cause delay in periods. If pregnancy test is negative you can be fairly sure that you are not pregnant. I suggest you wait for a few more days for your period. If they still don't resume on their own we can help you start them. All the best.

Placental Abruption - What are the Risks and Complications Associated with it?

MS - Obstetrics and Gynaecology, MBBS
Gynaecologist, Agra
Placental Abruption - What are the Risks and Complications Associated with it?

Pregnancy can have a number of complications. One of these is known as placental abruption. This is a serious yet uncommon complication. The placenta is a structure in the uterus that nourishes the growing baby. In rare cases, this placenta can get peeled off- partially or completely, before delivery. This is known as placenta abruption and deprives the baby of oxygen and essential nutrients and can cause the mother to experience heavy bleeding. If left untreated, this condition can put the life of both the baby and mother in jeopardy.

The cause of placental abruption has is still not known, but there are a number of conditions that can increase the risk of suffering from this condition. This includes:

  1. A prior placental abruption
  2. High blood pressure
  3. Abdominal trauma such as a fall or blow to the abdomen
  4. Substance abuse or smoking
  5. Premature rupturing of the amniotic sac that surrounds the baby
  6. Any condition that reduces your blood’s ability to clot
  7. Multiple pregnancies
  8. Pregnancy after the age of 40

A placental abruption can be diagnosed through blood tests, an ultrasound and a non stress test to check the baby’s heart rate. Placental abruption affects the life the mother and baby in many ways. For the mother, it can result in excessive bleeding that triggers shock, blood clotting problems and the need for a blood transfusion. It can also cause kidney, liver and pituitary gland failure. Even after delivery, the mother may still experience vaginal bleeding. If this cannot be controlled, an emergency hysterectomy may also be required. The uterus may also not contract properly after delivery and the mother may need medication to help the uterus contract back to its original position.

Placental abruption deprives the baby of essential nutrients and can lead to premature birth or stillbirth. After delivery the baby may suffer from breathing and feeding difficulties. The baby may also be born with low levels of oxygen in the blood. Low blood pressure and low blood count can also be triggered by this condition. In severe cases, it can also lead to brain damage and death shortly after delivery.

Placental abruption can be prevented by following a healthy diet that helps regulate blood pressure. Get plenty of rest and take multivitamins regularly to reduce the risk of suffering from this condition. Lastly, if you experience any contractions or vaginal bleeding, consult your gynaecologist immediately.
