Suffering from tinnitus from the past 7 years Wats d solution for tht Kindly reply.

M S, MBBS
Ear-Nose-Throat (ENT) Specialist, Gurgaon
Tinnitus at times could be real difficult to treat. Kindly get yourself examined for hearing loss by getting pure tone audiometry. You may use sound generators to mask and suppress tinnitus. If there is associated anxiety, reducing the anxiety also helps.

I always find blood with mucous from right nose only. Doc told me its sinusitis but xray proved its wrong. I do not have DNS too.

MS(ENT), MBBS
Ear-Nose-Throat (ENT) Specialist, Hyderabad
lybrate-user X ray is not a good tool to comment on sinus status. You should get CT scan of nose and paranasal sinus. Other than sinusitis there are many other nasal diseases which can cause one sided nasal bleeding. So you should also undergo nasal endoscopy to detect it from a good ENT expert.

My doctor told me to get TSH test done for me. I am diabetic and I feel very low during working hours. I am taking diabetes medicine, still I feel lots of dizziness during the day. Doctor told me to get TSH test done. However, some family friends told me that thyroid disorders exist only in females. I am bit confused that should I go for thyroid treatment or not. Please suggest.

MBBS, MD - Internal Medicine
General Physician, Delhi
Dear lybrate-user, diabetes is an autoimmune disease that means your own body attacks the cells that produce insulin. Similarly thyroid disease is also an autoimmune disease. And it has been found that people who have diabetes are at higher risk of having thyroid disease. As for the other part it is false that only women have thyroid disease, even men can have thyroid disease. So follow your doctors advice and get your thyroid profile done. However whether you have thyroid disease or not, can only be ascertained when your report comes.

Respected sir /madam, from the last 3 days my right ear has been blocked please till me how to sort it out.
Blockage of one ear is because of cold allergy etc. Wherein there is cold inside nostrils or throat which air blocks air movements inside eustachian tube. There may be nasal defect, or wax in ear. For effective treatment you should see physician or ent specialist for definite diagnosis.

Picking Your Nose Secretly - Can It Be Harmful for Your Body?

MBBS, MD - General Medicine, FCCS,USA, DIPLOMA IN HOSPITAL MANAGEMENT, POST GRADUATE DIPLOMA IN JOURNALISM AND MASS COMMUNICATION
General Physician, Jaipur
Picking Your Nose Secretly - Can It Be Harmful for Your Body?

Do you have a habit of secretly picking your nose? This is a very common bad habit, which many people carry out, in spite of it being a habit which is frowned upon. There is a certain amusement that people seem to enjoy about picking the nose. However, on top of being a very unhealthy and unhygienic habit, it is harmful for the body as well.

Why should you stop picking your nose?

Picking your nose is quite dangerous for your body. Your fingers contain many harmful germs, which are transmitted into your nostrils when you are digging into your nose. A specific germ known as Staphylococcus aureus can live in the front part of your nose. Combining the habit of nose picking along with the germs, may lead to the development of abrasions. These abrasions can bleed and promote more germs. As a result, the crust and irritation increase the more you keep on picking your nose. Based on where you are and what you have touched with your hands, some seriously dangerous germs may enter your body, causing health hazards and complications.

Children are notorious by nature and it is very common among children to pick their nose resulting in nose bleeding. The blood supply to the nose is quite vigorous in nature and there are five arteries that reach to the front part of the nose or Kisselbach’s plexus. When an abrasion takes place, there are chances of severe bleedings, due to damage to these fragile arteries.

Other reasons

  1. Picking your nose may lead to the development of pimples in the nose hair follicles.

  2. In case a small pimple in the nose develops into a boil, the infection may travel to the brain through your bloodstream.

  3. In case you are suffering from cold and your sinus is blocked, picking your nose may lead to the development of sinusitis. This happens because of the introduction of various bacteria present beneath your fingernails into the nose. They may proceed to the sinus cavity from your nose. Due to insufficient drainage, the bacteria will multiply and cause a sinus infection.

  4. Picking your nose on a regular basis makes your nose a breeding group of dangerous germs. If you do not wash your hands after picking your nose, these germs may be transmitted to others.

If you feel some irritation in your nose or feel a constant stuffiness, you should use a tissue paper to soothe your nostrils. Avoid using your fingers for picking and if the irritation lasts even after cleaning it, you should consult a doctor.

I have had tinnitus (ringing sound in the ears) for 2 years now. I have tried many doctors since than but absolutely no improvements. Is there a cure for tinnitus in medical science? I have been listening to white noises in silence of the night in order to sleep.

Being an antifungal and anti-inflammatory agent, apple cider vinegar can also be used to treat any underlying infection that may be contributing to tinnitus. Apple cider vinegar also balances the alkaline level in the body. Mix two teaspoons of apple cider vinegar and a little honey in a glass of water. Drink this solution two or three times daily until the ringing sensation in the ears stops. For further queries get back to me.

Hi Good Evening! How to control snoring? Does pranayam help on it? Thanks and Regards Smit.

C.S.C, D.C.H, M.B.B.S
General Physician,
Lifestyle changes to stop snoring Lose weight. If you’re overweight, dropping even a few pounds can reduce fatty tissue in the back of the throat and decrease or even stop snoring. Exercise can also help to stop snoring. As well aiding weight loss, exercising your arms, legs, and abs, for example, also leads to toning the muscles in your throat, which in turn can lead to less snoring. There are also specific exercises you can do to strengthen the muscles in your throat (see below). Quit smoking. Quitting is easier said than done, but smoking irritates the membranes in the nose and throat which can block the airways and cause snoring. Get help with quitting here. Avoid alcohol, sleeping pills, and sedatives because they relax the muscles in the throat and interfere with breathing. Talk to your doctor about any prescription medications you’re taking, as some encourage a deeper level of sleep which can make snoring worse. Establish regular sleep patterns. Create a healthy bedtime ritual with your partner and stick to it. Hitting the sack in a routine way together can help you sleep better and often minimize snoring. Bedtime remedies to help you stop snoring Clear nasal passages. If you have a stuffy nose, rinse sinuses with saline before bed. Using a Neti pot, nasal decongestant, or nasal strips can also help you breathe more easily while sleeping. If you have allergies, reduce dust mites and pet dander in your bedroom or use an allergy medication. Keep bedroom air moist. Dry air can irritate membranes in the nose and throat, so if swollen nasal tissues are the problem, a humidifier may help. Change your sleeping position. Elevating your head four inches may ease breathing and encourage your tongue and jaw to move forward. There are specially designed pillows available to help prevent snoring by making sure your neck muscles are not crimped. Sleep on your side instead of your back. Try attaching a tennis ball to the back of a pajama top or T-shirt. (You can sew a sock to the back of your top then put a tennis ball inside.) If you roll over onto your back, the discomfort of the tennis ball will cause you to turn back onto your side. Alternatively, wedge a pillow stuffed with tennis balls behind your back. After a while, sleeping on your side will become a habit and you can dispense with the tennis balls. Try an anti-snoring mouth appliance. These devices often resemble an athlete’s mouth guard and help open your airway by bringing your lower jaw and/or your tongue forward during sleep. While a dentist-made appliance can be expensive, cheaper do-it-yourself kits are also available. Throat exercises to stop snoring
