There are many who claim that they can cure cancer with Ayurvedic, unani, homeopathic aswell as Tibetan medicine. If the patient was started on geftinib as per the EGFR report, then I would advise you to continue the same as it has a good chance of response and may be long lasting in a few patients. Alternative medicines may contain steroids, which can suppress cancer for a few days (steroid are a part of chemotherapy in lymphoma) and also give sense of well-being. However if it does not have a long lasting effect and the cancer may come back with a vengeance. If you want to share the details and discuss this further, feel free to contact me directly.

Viagra - Can It Cause Skin Cancer?

Bachelor of Ayurveda, Medicine & Surgery (BAMS)

Viagra - Can It Cause Skin Cancer?

Sildenafil (Viagra), whose function is to inhibit a substance called Phosphodiestarase-5 or PDE5 - was initially used only for the treatment of angina pectoris (a cardiovascular problem) and pulmonary hypertension. Incidentally, it was discovered that it could help the issue of erectile dysfunction too, and thus became hugely popular in the late 1990s. The little blue pill, as it was called, ruled more than 50% of the sexual dysfunction market for more than 15 years. However, as its popularity and usage increased, so did the scientific information about this drug, and now there is an increased speculation that it could be contributing to skin cancer, specifically melanoma. This is considered as one of the most dangerous forms of skin cancer and so the safety of Viagra sildenafil came into question.

Research has shown that users of Viagra sildenafil are at a higher risk for developing melanoma. There are reports stating that about 45 million men are at an increased risk of developing melanoma due to associated Viagra sildenafil use. The risk of developing melanoma was found to increase in men using ED drugs by 21%. Though there is no conclusive proof as yet that sildenafil is the cause, research is increasingly pointing out its role in melanoma. For example, PDE5 inhibitors (sildenafil, tadalafil, vardenafil) are known to promote melanin synthesis, which may exacerbate melanoma development.

The analysis of biochemical pathways of this correlation suggests that Viagra sildenafil triggers a special biochemical action involving the growth-stimulating cGMP (cyclic guanosine monophosphate (an intracellular signaling molecule) which in turn promotes the growth of malignant melanoma. In normal cases, the enzyme phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) regulates the cGMP preventing any adverse cellular activity. Sildenafil inhibits the production of this enzyme, and potentiates a specific cGMP-related biochemical mechanism (called cGMP-cGKI pathway) , and thereby contributes to malignant melanoma. This has been proven to happen in mice and is yet to be proven in humans.

However, there are also reports which suggest that this does not happen due to Viagra sildenafil per se, but due to greater exposure to sun, which even otherwise increases the chances of skin cancer in general, and melanoma in particular. The countering theories also say that the population in which skin cancer was detected, comprised mostly of high income individuals who spent a significant amount of time holidaying on beaches and are not connected to the extensive use of Viagra per se.

Therefore, though there is a correlation that has been established, there is no definite proof that Viagra sildenafil causes skin cancer. It is however, advisable to use ED drugs after medical consultation. If a patient has a genetic predisposition to develop melanoma, it is advisable to seek medical advice before the use of ED drugs. Occasional use should not be harmful. Also, when going out in the sun, limiting exposure to direct sun and UV protection should be managed too. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a sexologist.

Ayurvedic Remedies for Laryngeal Cancer

The formation of malignant cells in the larynx tissues leads to laryngeal cancer. Most tissue malignancy occur in the squamous cells (flat, thin cells inside the larynx lining). Men are more susceptible to laryngeal cancer than women.

Laryngeal cancer falls under the category of neck cancer and head cancer. The risk factors of laryngeal cancer include:

  1. Using tobacco based products
  2. Drinking excessive alcohol
  3. Exposure to asbestos and sulphuric acid

The symptoms of laryngeal cancer are:

  1. Coughing or sore throat that does not heal (know more about Whooping Cough)
  2. Difficulty in swallowing
  3. Pain in the ears
  4. Throat or neck lumps
  5. Hoarseness in the voice

The conventional treatments for laryngeal cancer are radiation, chemotherapy and surgery.

Ayurvedic treatment can be used together with conventional therapies. Ayurvedic remedies have minimal side-effects and as such are safe. Usually, conventional therapies weaken the body. Fatigue is a common side-effect of harsh treatments like radiation and chemotherapy. As such, Ayurveda aims to bring the body back to balance by fighting the effects of harsh treatments that cause imbalances in the body. It hopes to achieve harmony through natural methods. It can increase energy, promote wellbeing, balance the body, mind and spirit, reduce stress and prevent the disease from returning.

Eating certain healthy food, herbs and professionally prescribed Ayurvedic remedies can help with cancer treatment. Besides healing your body from the inside, there are other important beneficial remedies that can prove to be useful. They include:

  1. Meditation can reduce blood pressure, anxiety and improve all around well-being.
  2. Yoga and pranayama is supremely helpful
  3. Oil massages with healing herbs and essential oils are good for the body and mind

Cancer treatment requires time and patience. You cannot hasten the process. If you are recovered or you are in the recovery phase, it is important not to fall back to the bad habits that put your body out of balance. So if you are on treatment, or done with the treatment, do not start smoking or drinking again. smoking and drinking harms the good effects and can lead to recurrence of the disease.

Symptoms and Treatment of Ovarian cancer

Symptoms and Treatment of Ovarian cancer

Amongst the different types of gynecological cancers prevalent today, ovarian cancer is associated with the highest rate of fatality. This type of cancer refers to tumours that grow in the ovaries. In most cases, these develop on the outer lining or epithelium of the ovary. Though this type of cancer is difficult to treat in its later stages, if diagnosed early enough it can be easily managed.

In the early stages of ovarian cancer, very few symptoms may be present. Many women do not experience any symptoms at all. The symptoms that may be experienced can be associated with other conditions and hence often go unrecognized. However, in the case of ovarian cancer, these symptoms will gradually increase and worsen with time. Some of the early symptoms of ovarian cancer could include:

  • Pain in the lower stomach or pelvic area
  • Back aches
  • Indigestion
  • Frequent urge to urinate
  • Painful intercourse
  • Change in bowel habits
  • Nausea
  • Weight loss
  • Fatigue
  • Loss of appetite or feeling full without eating too much

Ovarian cancer usually affects women over the age of 65. Women with a family history of breast cancer or ovarian cancer have a higher risk of developing these tumours. Endometriosis and hormone replacement therapy could also increase one’s risk of ovarian cancer.

As with other types of cancer, treatment for ovarian cancer depends largely on how far it has advanced. The main forms of treatment include surgery, chemotherapy and radiation. Surgery is usually the first step of treating ovarian cancer. This involves a partial or complete hysterectomy. In the former, only one ovary and the adjoining fallopian tube is removed while in the latter both ovaries, fallopian tubes and the uterus are removed. The lymph nodes around the reproductive system and the fatty tissue in the abdomen may also be removed. A woman can conceive a child after a partial hysterectomy. In cases of advanced ovarian cancer, surgery may also include removing cancerous cells from the urinary system, intestines and spleen.

Surgery is usually followed by chemotherapy, medication for targeted therapy or hormone therapy. Radiation is rarely used to treat ovarian cancer. In addition, many patients also require counselling to cope with body change issues and the loss of sexual desire. Ovarian cancer can recur and hence it is also important to get regularly screened for any signs of recurrent tumours. In cases of recurrent cancer, chemotherapy is the most preferred form of treatment. Consult an Expert & get answers to your questions!
