How many reason of blood cancer? Which type medicins are available for blood cancer in india? How many percentage for live patient? And please tell me Ayurvedic medicine for blood cancer.

DNB, MBBS
Oncologist, Faridabad
Dear mam, blood cancer is usually caused by some mutations or change in genes which control the growth of blood cells. Blood is composed of multiple cells, rbc, wbc, platelets, plasma cells etc. Treatment depends on type of cells effected. Leukaemias have many long term survivors and is nearly curable, but one has to be tolerant enough to complete the treatment and be on regular follow up. I am not aware of ayuvedic medication.

DNB, MBBS

Animals do get cancer but it is unlikely that it can be transmitted by Eating animal meat. One should eat properly cooked meat to avoid infection but cancer is not a communicable disease and it doesn't survive in dead cells.

Prostate Cancer - Signs and Symptoms

Cancer is the most dangerous disease noticeable throughout the world. The most common type of cancer that affects men is prostate cancer. Prostate is a small exocrine gland situated directly below the bladder and in front of the rectum. This is gland is approximately in size of a walnut and plays an important role in production of a milky fluid during orgasm of sex in which the semen travels. During the climax stage of the prostate gland is forced to push the fluid and remove the semen out of the reproductive structures.

Prostate gland is a slow progressive disease which makes many males left unidentified even the presence of prostate cancer even until they die. 6 out of 100 male over the age of 60 are getting prostate cancer. Though prostate cancer can be cured at a better rate when compared to other type of cancer it is always best to stay protected. Prevention is always better than cure. Here are few tips to keep your prostate healthy.

Signs and symptoms of prostate cancer-

During the early stages of prostate cancer there are usually no symptoms. Most men at this stage find out they have prostate cancer after a routine check up or blood test. When symptoms do exist, they are usually one or more of the following:

  1. The patient urinates more often

  2. The patient gets up at night more often to urinate

  3. He may find it hard to start urinating

  4. He may find it hard to keep urinating once he has started

  5. There may be blood in the urine

  6. Urination might be painful

  7. Ejaculation may be painful (less common)

  8. Achieving or maintaining an erection may be difficult (less common).

If the prostate cancer is advanced the following symptoms are also possible:

  1. Bone pain, often in the spine (vertebrae), pelvis, or ribs

  2. The proximal part of the femur can be painful

  3. Leg weakness

  4. Urinary incontinence

  5. Fecal incontinence

Ways to have a healthy prostate –

  1. Diet and weight – the most important factor is the diet to maintain a healthy weight. Avoid fatty food items and take fats from vegetables than from animals. Avoid dairy products and increase the intake of fresh fruits and vegetables.

  2. Exercise – have a regular practise of doing exercise at least for 30mins a day. This really helps you to keep your body fit.

  3. Be precautious – if you have a family history of prostate cancer or if you feel you are at high risk of getting prostate cancer talk with your doctor about it and take preventive drugs as per the doctor’s advice.

  4. Red foods – research shows that men who consume red foods like watermelon, tomato and other red fruits are at lower risk of getting prostate cancer as they contain a powerful antioxidant called lycopene

  5. Caffeine – three to four cups of coffee per day reduces your risk of getting prostate cancer.

  6. Stop smoking – if you are at high risk of getting prostate cancer it is best advised to quit smoking and alcohol. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult an urologist.

Can prostate problem like (BHP or infection) affect morning erection. Doctor give me prostate alpha blocker medicine. Which quite help me. Is that serious?

MBBS
General Physician,
Alpha blockers are very effective in reducing urimary flow problems in prostatic hyperplasia and some of them also they help reducing size causing programmed cell death of cells. Now some of them like tamsulosin may cause retrograde ejaculation. Some of them cause dizziness, hypotension, priapism and impotence rarely. But they do not generally affect morning erection. Morning erection is physiological and occur when you wake up after rem sleep. Anxiety may be cause of absence of it. So stop overthinking about it consult your doctor if you have this problem for long.

What are the symptoms of breast cancer and what is the minimum age of its occurring? How we can cure it? Is any lump in the breast could be cancerous?

DNB (Obstetrics and Gynecology), PGDHHM, MBBS
Gynaecologist, Delhi
Signs and symptoms of breast cancer include: A lump in the breast – the most common first sign The woman usually finds the lump. Sometimes the lump is seen on a screening mammogram before it can be felt. The lump is present all the time and does not get smaller or go away with the menstrual cycle. The lump may feel like it is attached to the skin or chest wall and cannot be moved. The lump may feel hard, irregular in shape and very different from the rest of the breast tissue. The lump may be tender, but it is usually not painful. Pain is more often a symptom of a non-cancerous (benign) condition, but should be checked by a doctor. A lump in the armpit (axilla) Sometimes small, hard lumps in the armpit may be a sign that breast cancer has spread to the lymph nodes. Although these lumps are often painless, they may be tender. Changes in breast shape or size Skin changes The skin of the breast may become dimpled or puckered. A thickening and dimpling of the skin is sometimes called orange peel skin, or peau d’orange. Redness, swelling and increased warmth (signs that look like an infection) may be a sign of inflammatory breast cancer. Itching of the breast or nipple may be a sign of inflammatory breast cancer. Itchiness is often not relieved by ointments, creams or other medications. Nipple changes Some people’s nipples are always pointed inward (inverted). Normal nipples that suddenly become inverted should be checked by a doctor. Discharge from the nipples can be caused by many conditions, most of which are non-cancerous (benign). Discharge from one nipple may be a sign of breast cancer, especially if it appears without squeezing the nipple (is spontaneous) and is blood-stained. It may occur in any age but mostly in the old ages.

Ayurveda and Cervical Cancer

Cancer in the female reproductive organs has been on the rise in the past few years and is a major health concern. While conventional medicine has been able to improve certain aspects of the lives of patients afflicted by this, Ayurveda also has some great remedies for cervical cancer. Let's have a look at some of the remedies in Ayurveda.

  1. Ashwagandha or Withania Somnifera: Ashwagandha is an all rounder herb, which has long been a favorite of Ayurvedic practitioners. It is a great antioxidant as it has very strong anti-inflammatory properties which help fight the growth of cancer cells and thus can be very helpful in arresting or preventing cervical cancer.
  2. Lodhra or Symplocus Racemosa: This is a herb, which is used as an extract in powders or even found in the form of capsules. It is commonly used to treat vaginal discharges and menstrual problems and has been known to be very effective. It is also very useful for all cancers of the female reproductive organs including the cervix.
  3. Shatavari or Asparagus Racemosus: As a herb, Shatavari is very good in increasing libido in women and also increasing energy for daily activities. Ayurvedic practitioners have used this herb to treat many female sexual disorders since ages. It is also very effective in preventing cervical cancer and limiting the growth of cancer cells within the female reproductive organs.
  4. Ashoka bark of Saraka Indica: This is another ingredient, which is used frequently in the female health products. Ashoka bark is of special interest in case of female reproductive health as it has been known to reduce pain and symptoms caused by tumors in various organs. This natural remedy is also very effective in lessening painful PMS symptoms and correct menstrual problems. Thus, it can also reduce the chances of cervical cancer and also keep it under check.
  5. Guggul or Commiphora Mukul: Used in many health tonics because of its rejuvenating properties, this herb can be very helpful in the treatment of cervical cancer as it provides the body with many essential minerals which cannot be administered by other medications or food.

Hi Mr. lybrate-user, I appreciate you seeking help. Well, first and foremost, I would advise that you continue with treatment as advised by your urologist and see for symptomatic improvements, if any. Should you not feel better still, you can connect for the needful alternative medicine traction. From a dietary standpoint, do ensure that you include fresh tomatoes and turmeric in your diet on a daily basis. Spicy, oily, greasy, fatty, sweets and other high calorie foods including fast foods etc all are best avoided. Stay well hydrated and keep up an active and streamlined lifestyle. Hope this helps. Do take care and all the very best.

MD - Obstetrtics & Gynaecology

As you r just 14 years of age, your hormonal secretion is not yet established yet, causing hormonal imbalance and nipple pain. You can take pain killer if pain is severe other wise it will go without any treatment.

I have a prostate problem .which are the medicines that I can take for an early relieving from the problem. I have more strain while urinating.

BHMS
Homeopath,
Dear lybrate user, benign hypertrophy of prostate is a non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate gland. In this clinical condition multiple nodules are formed inside the prostate gland. These nodules often compress the urethra resulting in the narrowing of the lumen of urethra & producing a resistance to the urine flow. Resistance to urine flow requires the bladder to work harder during voiding, possibly leading to progressive enlargement, instability, or weakness of the bladder muscle. Benign hypertrophy of prostate can be easily diagnosed by an usg of whole abdomen along with blood test for prostate specific antigen (psa). Follow the given medication as directed:- 1) 5 drops of homoeopathic causticum 30 at early morning daily before brushing teeth 2) 5 drops of homoeopathic conium mac 30 before going to bath daily. 3) 5 drops of homoeopathic baryta carb 30 just one hour before dinner daily. 4) homoeopathic mother tincture sabal serrulata q, 30 drops, twice daily, after meals, in a cup of water. Along with the aforesaid medication few changes in your lifestyle are also necessary. Lifestyle alterations to address the symptoms include decreasing fluid intake before bedtime, moderating the consumption of alcohol and caffeine-containing products, and following a timed voiding schedule. Also it would be better if you could void the urine in sitting position.

Can person sufferings from blood cancer can be cured by bone marrow transplant? If yes how it can be possible?

European Society for Medical Oncology certification, DM - Oncology, MD - General Medicine, MBBS
Oncologist, Faridabad
The term bone marrow transplant is actually a misnomer in the present context as transplant is now conducted by harvesting stem cells from the blood of the donor. So the correct and logical term now is peripheral blood stem cell transplant. This is just like a blood donation for the donor and poses no risk at all to the donor. The term blood cancer is generally used for leukemias, these can be of two types - acute and chronic. For the chronic leukemias, specially chronic myeloid leukemia, stem cell transplant is now generally not required as drugs like imatinib, dasatinib and nilotinib are extremely effective. For chronic lymphocytic leukemia too transplant is rarely done these days and is generally reserved for relatively younger patients. Even in the imatinib era transplant is an effective procedure and can cure patients with cml (chronic myeloid leukemia) who do not respond to imatinib and other tyrosine kinase inhibitors. For acute myeloid leukemias stem cell transplant is recommended for all cases except the low risk cases, after completion of chemotherapy. Risk is defined based on kind of genetic mutations in the leukemic cells for acute lymphoblastic leukemia transplant is generally done at relapse, but certain genetic mutations necessitate an earlier transplant, so does presence of or increase in minimal residual disease, which signifies cancer cells not visible to the human eye under the microscope. Procedure of stem cell transplant hla matching is done between patient and siblings. Best match is selected as a donor. Matched sibling is the most commonly used donor in blood cancers. In many cases a match is not available, for such cases matched unrelated donor, cord blood, or a partially matched donor (haploidentical donor) is sometimes selected. Donor is given growth factor injection subcutaneously to bring out the stem cells from the bone marrow to bloodstream, twice daily for 5 days. After that the stem cells are collected and stored. Patient is given high dose chemotherapy to kill cancer cells as well as his normal marrow. After chemotherapy, donor stem cells are injected into the body of patient from a vein. After approximately 11-14 days the donor cells get engrafted in the patient's marrow and start producing normal blood cells. The donor cells also kill the cancer cells and prevent cancer from coming back. Overall depending on whether the patients cancer is controlled or not before transplant the cure rate after transplant can vary from 60 % for patients who have a good control and less aggressive disease biology, to less then 20 % in patients with uncontrolled disease before transplant. Overall, approximately 40 % patients get cured with a transplant. Upto 40 % patients can develop complications, and half of these may be very severe and life threatening. This figure is more in mismatched transplants. Apart from complications, there is still a risk of relapse and these patients need close monitoring in the first few years after transplant.
