Hello lybrate-user, from your history it appears to be a hormonal disturbance. Pcos is a condition which causes hormonal and metabolic disturbances which can lead to irregularity of periods, weight gain, acne, excessive hair growth and difficulty in conceiving. Have you done any tests? any sonography? if yes. Pls send reports. If no. Then you would need a few tests. Let me know.

Hi, it might be because of implantation bleeding, which usually occurs this time. If ultrasound report is normal then just relax. Continue with whatever tablet your doctor has prescribed.

Hi lybrate user, if her bleeding is not as normal as previous periods there is chance of pregnancy with cyclic bleeding, if there is any doubt you can confirm by doing a blood test called beta hcg.

Nothing to worry if pain is nit too severe. Watch for bleeding. Get ultrasound done after a week to confirm healthy pregnancy

I had unprotected sex. Following it up I took unwanted 72 within half an hour sex. After two days again I took the unwanted 72 pill. 3 days before my period was due I had a little bit bleeding which lasted for 3 days. It was not at all heavy like a period bleed. The colour of bleed was deep red and brown. Nor was there any cramps like I usually have. After it ended I took the pregnancy test it came out negative. I took the test again after 5 days and still it came negative. Am really worried. Its been a week I haven't got period and the tests are coming negative. What could this be?

It can be a case of hormone imbalance in your system. The medications like unwanted 72 have high doses of synthetic progestin, Levonorgestrel (hormone). The side effects of this medicine include the irregular menstrual bleeding that you are having. Don't worry. Get a ultrasound done if in doubt.

Hello, it's very normal to get irregular or missed periods at your age as it is the menopausal age, your menses are going to get stopped gradually and slowly. So, don't worry, relax! medication: as such no need to take any medication, but I would suggest you to take this medicine as it contains calcium & iron - five phos. 6x/ thrice daily/ 1month. Take more of milk, milk products, green veggies, seasonal fruits, salads, etc.

5 Alarming Reasons You Must Visit Your Gynaecologist

5 Alarming Reasons You Must Visit Your Gynaecologist
5 Alarming reasons you must visit your gynaecologist

In India, statistics reveal that more than 92% of women suffer from gynaecological problems. Some of these problems may turn out to be more serious than you expected. Here are 5 danger signs you should watch out for that signal an immediate visit to your gynaecologist.

1. Painful sex
Most women feel that it is normal to feel a little bit of pain in your vagina during sex. However, the truth is that pain during sex is not at all normal. If you feel pain while indulging in sexual activity, there are chances of you suffering from either vaginal dryness or a mild infection, which if left untreated can become worse. Some of these infections can even be STDs such as herpes, gonorrhoea etc.

2. Considerable bleeding during periods
If you bleed heavily during your periods, so much so that you have to change your sanitary napkin 2-3 times in just one to two hours, it’s a cause of concern. If this heavy menstrual flow is also accompanied with shortness of breath and rapid heart rate, you may be suffering from anaemia. In extreme cases (which is very rare), this can lead to extreme blood loss, which may require a blood transfusion.

3. Itchy vagina
Vaginal itching is very commonly ignored as most women consider it to be embarrassing, and as something that does not require any attention. However vaginal itching may be an indication of something more serious. Usually vaginal itching is a sign of fungal infection or a symptom of a sexually transmitted disease. In the worst-case scenario, it can even be a sign of vulvar cancer (a cancer of the vulva, which is the external part of your vagina).

4. Abnormal vaginal odour
Abnormal vaginal odour, just like an itchy vagina, may be a sign of a bacterial infection. Sometimes vaginal odour may even be accompanied with a thick and heavy vaginal discharge. This usually indicates vaginal yeast infection (an infection caused by an increase in the number of yeast cells present in your vagina), and if ignored these infections can recur, making sex and urination very painful activities.

5. Lump in your breast
A lump in the breast, whether or not accompanied by a bloody discharge from your nipples, is most likely a warning sign of cancer. You should also watch out for any type of pain in your breasts or even an abnormal growth as all of these indicate the development of cancerous cells in the breasts.
Schedule an appointment with your gynaecologist if you experience any one of these symptoms. It’s better to be safe than sorry.

If you miss your menses by 7 days then only you can check for pregnancy. Before that it will not come positive even if you r pregnant. Menses can be delayed normally also with hormonal changes.

Plz tell whether masturbation delays period. Masturbation once in two weeks delays periods. please reply.

MD - Obstetrtics & Gynaecology, MBBS
Gynaecologist,
Plz tell whether masturbation delays period. Masturbation once in two weeks delays periods. please reply.
Masturbation doesnot influence menstrual periods. So you can continue to do it. From the information you have given, at 5.6 feet height your weight is 85 kg, this is obesity. And in obese persons menstrual irregularity is common. Visit a near by gynecologist to get examined and evaluated for irregular menses. Most probably gynec will sugegst some tests like blood tests for thyroid disorders and hormone analysis and a sonography to evaluate your pelvic organs. Weight loss has been shown to normalise the internal hormonal balance and menses also regularise. So do go to gym and start diet and exercise together to achieve a good weight for your height. Take help of a dietician to plan your diet.

Hi
My wife had delivered baby normally on 20 Jan 17. Now she is ok. When we can start sex?
Dear user. In olden days it was almost 6 months. But in present medical advanced conditions, you can have penetrative sex after around 4 months of delivery. You should consider your wife's condition. On delivery she had a large wound inside her uterus and it takes time to heal. Give rest to her and give support. Take care.

Treating Spinal Stenosis the Right Way

MS - Orthopaedics, MBBS
Orthopedist, Hyderabad
Treating Spinal Stenosis the Right Way

What is spinal stenosis: The narrowing of the gaps in the spine or the backbone is called as spinal stenosis. This leads to pressure on the nerves and the spinal cord. 5% of cases of spinal stenosis are seen in the low back of the lumbar spine. In some cases the narrowing of the spine leads to the compressing of the nerve root, which leads to pain in the leg.

Causes of spinal stenosis: It can be caused by aging, arthritis, trauma to the spine, spondylolisthesis and tumor of the spine

Symptoms of spinal stenosis: There is constant pain in the back and legs as stenosis pinches the nerve responsible for sensation and muscle power. Other symptoms are numbness and tingling in the legs, frequent falling and pain while walking.

Treatment of spinal stenosis:

  1. A routine program with exercises and physical therapy are the best treatment for spinal stenosis. The exercises are not a complete cure but they are beneficial in keeping the patient active. A physical therapy can be supervised and once the period of the same is over people easily transition to the exercise program. The key for exercise is starting slowly in order to build strength.
  2. Generally, the patients are counseled not to perform strenuous activities as that might worsen the symptoms of spinal stenosis. In case of lumbar stenosis, patients find it comfortable when they are flexed forward. The doctor might recommend walking while being bent over and leaning when using a walker if not walking upright; sitting in recliners is also recommended instead of straight back chairs.
  3. Injections of cortisone are usually given in the epidural space. This is believed to relieve the symptoms of spinal stenosis temporarily. Though there have been studies which question the use of these injections as they lead to the risk of osteoporosis related fractures. This is still being pondered over by the doctors as a suitable treatment option as it has its own benefits and risks.
  4. Medications such as the anti inflammatory medicines like ibuprofen or aspirin are helpful in controlling the symptoms of spinal stenosis. Narcotic drugs might also prove to be helpful if used with care and for a short while. This is helpful for severe pain related to the nerves. Muscle relaxants like gabapentins might also be recommended. In some case antidepressants might also be given to provide relief from pain.

Though side effects are a concern when using these medications and the patient should let the doctor knows about their allergies.

Which day to which day is safest sex and there have low chances of pregnancy before Menstruation? Her period cycle is 35 days.

MD - Obstetrtics & Gynaecology
Gynaecologist, Mumbai
Which day to which day is safest sex and there have low chances of pregnancy before Menstruation?
Her period cycle is...
If a women’s menstrual cycle varies from 26days to 35days cycle, The shortest cycle (26days) minus18days=8th day. The longest cycle (35days) minus 10days=25st day Thus, 8th to 25st day of each cycle counting from first day of menstrual period is considered as fertile period. That is UNSAFE PERIOD. Period other than this fertile period in a menstrual cycle is considered as SAFE PERIOD.
