My question is that my father has discharge from a hospital after Bronchoscopy treatment. He has been suffering from cough bleeding before hospitalisation. Doctors have checked and tested. According to Doctors he has suffered from Lung Infection or cavity in chest. There is no TB found. Doctors said bleeding may be stopped or continued. At the time of discharge from Hospital, father was fine but within two days after discharged again bleeding starting. Can you suggest what should we do? Can you suggest for full treatment.

MBBS, MD - Pulmonary Medicine, DNB - Pulmonary Medicine, MD - Internal Medicine, Diploma in Tuberculosis and Chest Diseases (DTCD)
Pulmonologist, Delhi
Bleeding can be stopped by bronchial artery embolisation. Tuberculosis is not ruled out completely in this case. MTB culture and Gene expert are other tests in addition to AFB smear. A CT scan of chest will be helpful in diagnosing cause of cavity. Be in touch with pulmonologist.

Doc, you said ear had 3 parts, how will I know if my ears is affected by 1, 2 or 3? I'using hearing aid now but the sound is not good and I cannot identify the voice, I been with my audiologist many times to fine tune my hearing aids but still the same. What should I do?

Bachelor of Audiology & Speech Language Pathology (B.A.S.L.P)
Audiologist, Kolkata
Hello, after audiometry test the audiologist will either mark or show pictures of ear to compare your hearing status, and tell you which part of your ear is affected. Nxt part is about your hearing aid, get your audiometry test again and adjust your aid accordingly, if the problem is not resolved then it is either your sensorineural loss or the aid is not suitable for your loss.

Hello, PCOS or pcod s a problem in which a woman's hormones are out of balance. It can cause problems with your periods and make it difficult to get pregnant. PCOS also may cause unwanted changes in the way you look. If it isn't treated, over time it can lead to serious health problems, such as diabetes and heart disease. The most common symptoms are: Acne. Weight gain and trouble losing weight. Extra hair on the face and body. Thinning hair or even hair loss on scalp. Irregular periods. Often women with PCOS have fewer than nine periods a year. Some women have no periods. Others have very heavy bleeding. Fertility problems. Many women who have PCOS have trouble getting pregnant (infertility), depression. Regular exercise, healthy foods, and weight control are the key treatments for PCOS. Treatment (hormonal) can reduce unpleasant symptoms and help prevent long-term health problems. Try to fit in moderate activity and/or vigorous activity often. Brisk Walking, jogging, dance or aerobics are great exercise that most people can do. Eat heart-healthy foods. This includes lots of vegetables, fruits, nuts, beans, and whole grains. It limits foods that are high insaturated fat, such as meats, cheeses, and fried foods. Most women who have PCOS can benefit from losing weight. Even losing 5 kg may help get your hormones in balance, regulate your menstrual cycle and can make you ovulate.

Gut Feelings: Eight Steps to Better Digestion

C.S.C, D.C.H, M.B.B.S
General Physician,
Poor digestion can put a cramp in anyone’s style. But sometimes it’s tough to know what might be causing the problem. Here’s a quick way to make sense of bad gut feelings, along with some steps you can take to improve your digestive health.

Your gut is your guardian

Your gut is a bit like a watchdog. It’s a tough and loyal guardian, and very smart.

Its job is to welcome healthy nutrients and life-giving water, while protecting you from various toxins and irritants that may try to sneak in alongside them.
Most of the time, your gut has great judgement. But occasionally, it’s a bit hasty. Every now and then, it overreacts. And sometimes, it’s just not strong enough to fend off the “bad guys.”

What kind of bad guys are we talking about? Well...there are dozens. You can learn more about them in this in-depth article. But in the meantime:

too many over-the-counter or prescription drugs
too much sugar or refined carbohydrates
too much alcohol
“bad” bacteria
parasites, yeast
stress (acute & chronic)
environmental contaminants.
When your gut hurts

Any of these can irritants can lead to bloating, gas, constipation, or diarrhea.

If you’re suffering from symptoms like these, it means your “enemies” are too strong. Your guardian has been overpowered and simply can’t protect you any more.

Symptoms of poor gut health can also show up outside the gut.

Have you ever been bothered by unexplained headaches, joint pain, fibromyalgia, skin problems, sleep disturbances, or fatigue? Any of these might be due to poor gut health.
The good news is that with the right nutrition, you can strengthen your gut’s defences and provide a stronger barrier. Not only will your gut be happier, but you’ll also enjoy better overall health.

Eight easy steps to a happier gut

It may be tempting simply to mask your symptoms with medications like over-the-counter antacids or prescription drugs.

But soothing the symptoms won’t make your underlying problem go away, and may actually make things worse.

Instead, try these simple nutritional strategies. Followed with a bit of care, they can help you figure out the source and treat it at the same time.

Eat when hungry, stop when satisfied. Believe it or not, this simple rule can save you countless hours of misery (and might help you lose unwanted pounds).
Eat slowly. Chewing is important for enzyme release and breaking food into particles that the gut can manage.
Eliminate any foods or drinks that bother you. Aren’t sure what those are? Try an elimination diet to find out. Common culprits include sugar alcohols, refined grains, MSG, and dairy products.
Add real food. Fruits, vegetables, beans, tea, and coffee are good sources of gut-strengthening flavonoids. Beans, peas, whole grains, nuts, seed, fruits are high in fibre, which helps to ensure regular elimination of toxins.
Balance your bacteria. Good bacteria strengthen the intestinal barrier. Choose 1-2 probiotic/prebiotic rich foods or drinks and eat them often. Here are some ideas to get you started.
Recover well. Sleep, stress management (like meditation or yoga) and exercise are vital to help us control inflammation, which in turn can improve gut health. But remember that too much exercise is taxing on the body. And give your gut a break: avoid big meals before exercise.
Reduce your chemical burden. Choose organic when you can, try not to heat foods in plastic containers, avoid food colorings and fish high in mercury.
Supplement wisely. A few options to consider include glutamine, digestive enzyme supplements, Vitamin D, Omega-3s, iron, turmeric. But be sure to address the underlying problem first. You can ask me doubts, privately

Mr. lybrate-user, Thaks for the query. It is good to know that blood glucose level is well in control. As regards numbness and heaviness in right hand, it could be due to (peripheral neuropathy, which does develop once diabetes goes on for a long period (over months to years). This happens even when glucose control is very good. I am sure you are aware good control means maintaining FBG < 100 mg & PP 150 to 160 mg & HbA1c% <6.8 Most important is to achieve very strict glucose control plus certain medications like methylcobalamine, and some combinations are useful. Plus gabapentine or pragabalin could be used. As regards BP 150/90 mm Hg, is high needs some antihypertensive. In this commiunication we are supposed to give only general guidelines, no prescriptions are allowed. That can be done only in private conversation. Thanks.

Blood in my stools. Today I found blood in my stools. It happened in two bowel movements one in the morning and the other in the evening. Generally I never had this problem earlier. Generally I don't feel bowels completely empty after my first visit to bath room, but at the end of the day after one more bowel movement I feel free. I drink water in the morning every day ,and then do cardio on stationary bicycle. But my some times my meal timings are not regular, some times there is a 5-6 hour gap between meals .And 10-11 hour gap between dinner and breakfast. This happens because of my hectic work load of my software job. Is my problem serious? Please help.

Hello. Masturbation is a medically healthy and psychologically normal habit. It is considered abnormal only when it inhibits partner-oriented behavior, is done in public, or is sufficiently compulsive to cause distress. Masturbation does not produce premature ejaculation. Post-masturbation effects: a man whose penis has suffered a blunt trauma, severe bend or other injury during intercourse or masturbation may, rarely, sustain a penile fracture or suffer from peyronie's disease. Phimosis is" a contracted foreskin (that) may cause trouble by hurting when an attempt is made to pull the foreskin back" in these cases, any energetic manipulation of the penis can be problematic. A small percentage of men suffer from postorgasmic illness syndrome (pois), which can cause severe muscle pain throughout the body and other symptoms immediately following ejaculation, whether due to masturbation or partnered sex. The symptoms last for up to a week. Masturbation drains vital nutrients from the body. If body is in the state of good health to recover, supported by healthy food, regular exercise and calm mind, this practice may cause no impact. Continued drain without enough nutrition reach can lead to weakness (trauma), reflected both in mind (lack of self confidence is the most common) and in the body (digestive disorders, hair fall, frequent urination etc). Medication: take staphysagria 200 and alfaalfa tonic - both twice daily for 3 weeks.
