My grandfather who is 75 years old is suffering from esophageal cancer which has been detected recently. According to the doctor he is in the stage iii of the disease. Is there any chance of survival? We want to know details of experts in Guwahati. Please guide us.

MBBs, MD - Medicine, DM - Oncology
Oncologist, Cuttack
The Curative treatment options for esophageal cancer are either Surgery or concurrent Chemoradiation. Chemoradiation is preferred in upper esophagus and surgery is preferred in lower esophagus. But at the age of 75 he may not tolerate surgery we'll. So in my opinion chemoradiation if he is fit or only radiation may be tried in Curative intent.

I am 47 year and I take RMD (gutkha) from past 18 years regularly. Now I am worrying whether I may affect with cancer like disease. I would like to have through checkup for this. What should I do?

DNB, MBBS
Oncologist, Faridabad
Dear sir, first and foremost, quit gutkha from now to keep away cancer. You can get a detailed clinical examination done by ent surgeon or oncologist to rule out any ulceration, abnormal growth in even premalignant conditions like white patch or reddish patch, erythroplakia, reduced mouth opening or submucosal fibrosis. You can also take cancer preventive medicines or food rich in antioxidants. Preventive oncology department is available in oncology hospitals to screen cancers before appearance of symptoms.

He is suffering with bone cancer fourth stage. I want to know whether there is any treatment for curing this case.

DNB, MBBS
Oncologist, Faridabad
Fourth stage bone cancers whether it may be osteogenic sarcoma or ewings sarcoma, it would be by chemotherapy. Sometimes if it is a solitary site of metastases then surgery can be performed if excision Is possible and excision doesn't bring functional morbidity.

I am 28 years old women. Before 4 years I took a surgery for lump on my right breast. At the same time a tiny lumps on my left breast too. I took needle biopsy to the both breast at that time. The result is normal. The biopsy result of right breast is also normal. After 6 months of surgery I got married and delivers a child before our first anniversary. My left breast lump is become larger during this period. Am i suspect the left breast lump cancer. I am afraid to a medical examine. Please give me a clarification.

M.CH - Surgical Oncology, MBBS
Oncologist, Visakhapatnam
Hi, it is normal for benign breast lumps to enlarge rapidly during pregnancy. They usually don't turn into cancer. They enlarge secondary to the hormonal changes durimg that time and may regress back later. But if you still have a large persistent lump, please do consult a surgeon in person as a clinical examination will reveal a lot more. And if needed you can get it removed. Most importantly, your doubt regardin cancer will be clarified. Hope his helps. Take care.

If I smoke then what effects found on my body. It can be caused by cancer Or not.

POST GRADUATE DIPLOMA IN CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGY, Masters in clinical psychology

Hi Lybrate user If you are a long term smoker, on an average, your life expectancy is about 10 years less than a non-smoker. It can be caused cancer, heart desease and many more health problems, but if you stop smoking cigarettes your body start to recover from the effects of nicotine and addictives, your lung capacity increases and your breathing and general fitness will improved and you will live longer and feel better. Try to live a happy and healthy life. Thanks.
