Importance of Oral Hygiene Pre-Pregnancy and for Expecting Mothers

Importance of Oral Hygiene Pre-Pregnancy and for Expecting Mothers

Maintaining proper oral health is very essential for everyone but it becomes more important for women who are planning to conceive or are pregnant. Studies reveal that if a woman is suffering from gum disease, the chances of the baby being born prematurely or having inadequate weight increase.

Moreover, the alteration in the levels of the hormone in the body caused due to pregnancy might also trigger gum disease and a condition known as pregnancy gingivitis, which makes taking care of oral hygiene mandatory for expecting mothers.

How can you ensure proper oral hygiene before conceiving?
Visiting a dentist before conceiving is necessary to diagnose and treat any issues related to oral health, so that it doesn't affect the health of the baby in any way. During this visit, you can opt for professional cleaning of your teeth and proper scrutiny of your gum tissue to detect any oral health issues, which might influence your pregnancy.

How can you maintain proper oral health during pregnancy?
You can take the following measures to ensure that your teeth and gums remain healthy during pregnancy.

  • Visit your dentist regularly - Pregnancy should not keep you from going for regular dental checkups. The dentist can conduct the requisite periodontal exams and provide you instructions for maintaining healthy gums and teeth during this period.
  • Inform your dentist about the drugs you are consuming - Letting your dentist know about all the medications you are consuming and their dosages is advisable so that he/she can accordingly design your dental treatment plan.
  • Don't avoid dental X-rays - If you need a dental X-ray, you can opt for it even while you are pregnant. Informing your dentist about your pregnancy will ensure that, he/she takes extra measures for your and the baby's safety by protecting your thyroid gland and abdomen from the rays.
  • Consider morning sickness while choosing your toothpaste - Morning sickness often hinders with the normal process of brushing due to the taste of the toothpaste. In this case, asking your dentist to recommend a suitable brand for you would be the right thing to do.
  • Ensure that you follow a healthy diet - Following a diet which contains a minimum amount of sugary snacks and more dairy products like yogurt and cheese is recommended for expecting mothers. This not only decreases the risks of tooth decay but also ensures proper development of the baby's gums, bones, and teeth.

Salivary Gland Disorder - Common Causes Behind it

DNB (ENT), MBBS
ENT Specialist, Bangalore
Salivary Gland Disorder - Common Causes Behind it

Remember the sensation similar to that of a warm liquid flooding your tongue when you smell a deliciously baked chocolate cake? Or a freshly baked brown bread early in the morning? That is your saliva. The salivary glands present in the inner linings of the lips, cheeks and the mouth produce saliva. Saliva protects one from tooth decay, keeps the mouth moist and helps in the digestive process. Any disease that affects the saliva gland comes under the domain of ‘salivary gland disorders’.

Causes

There are three salivary glands in humans known as the Submandibular, Parotid and the Sublingual gland. The most common disorder that affects salivary glands is that of ‘blocked salivary glands’. Sialothiasis is a disorder wherein, calcium stones are formed in the salivary glands, which obstruct these glands. Obstruction of the salivary glands leads to an infection called sialadenitis, caused by strep or staph bacteria.

Sjogren’s syndrome is another condition which affects the salivary glands. In this condition, the antibodies in the body target the cells that produce saliva. This occurs mostly in women who suffer from autoimmune disorders. Viral infections are also common; flu virus and mumps are a few examples.

Symptoms

The symptoms of salivary gland disorders are problem specific; for Sialolithiasis, you will feel a painful lump below the tongue, which tends to aggravate when you eat. In case of Sialadenitis, there will be an odorous pus-filled discharge along with a lump beneath the chin. For viral infections, the symptoms will include muscle pain, swelling and fever. Symptoms of Sjogren’s syndrome are dry eyes and mouth, joint pain, fatigue and tooth decay.

Treatment

Like the symptoms, the treatments for salivary gland disorders are also problem specific. For salivary gland tumors, surgery is required. If it is a malignant tumor, then radiation therapy will be prescribed which may cause dry mouth syndrome (Xerostomia). For bacterial and viral infections, anti-bacterial and anti-viral medications are required for treatment, respectively. It is also important that you take good care of your oral health for an even more effective treatment. Brushing and flossing your teeth on a regular basis will help keep salivary gland disorders at bay. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a doctor and ask a free question.

Advice for Patients on the Use of Herbal Products

BHMS
Homeopath, Mumbai
Advice for Patients on the Use of Herbal Products

1. If you are going to take herbs, see a practitioner formally trained in botanical medicine.
2. Buy herbal remedies from trusted and reliable sources.
3. Avoid herbs in which the purity and quality are suspicious, especially imported herbs.
4. Most herbs, like drugs, should be avoided during pregnancy and lactation and should not be given to small children.
5. Consider drug/herb interactions.
6. Start with low dosages and beware of the dosages: two pills from the same bottle may have completely different strengths.
7. To avoid possible chronic effects, do not use herbal remedies for long periods.
8. If you are unwell, discontinue use immediately and seek medical advice.

When a woman's not interested in sex?and would like to be?it may have something to do with her relationship, her upbringing, or something else in her experience, but there could also be a medical explanation. For instance: 1. Reduced blood flow Diabetes and high blood pressure are among the health problems that can restrict genital blood flow. 2. Hormonal issues Menopause, breast-feeding, birth control pills, and thyroid problems can dampen sexual desire. 3. Medication side effects Antidepressants and chemotherapy agents such as tamoxifen are frequently to blame. Approaching Menopause, She Stopped Wanting Sex More about women and sex ? Medical Reasons for Low Sex Drive ? Psychological Reasons for Low Sex Drive ? Answers About Women's Sex Problems ? The Female Dysfunction Debate 4. Nerve damage Pelvic surgery can cause nerve damage, as can diseases such as multiple sclerosis or Parkinson's. Other reasons for low desire might include lack of sleep or depression. Talk to a doctor or sex therapist If you have low desire, get checked out by your primary care doctor. Whether or not he or she finds a physical problem, a consultation with a certified sex therapist can be helpful, because physical sex problems usually create a psychological or relationship issue, as well. "It's usually not just one thing," says Marjorie Green, MD, director of the Mount Auburn Female Sexual Medicine Center in Cambridge, Mass., and a clinical instructor at Harvard Medical School. On the other hand, if you feel your lack of desire is a physical issue and your primary care doctor is not able or willing to help, you may want to consult a sexual medicine specialist. Treatments These vary depending on the source of the problem, but may include switching prescription medication, taking estrogen or testosterone, taking a drug that increases dopamine levels, or trying products such as Eros Therapy, an FDA-approved prescription-only device that uses gentle suction to increase blood flow to the clitoris and vulva. Some women may also see improvement with regular exercise, sex therapy, or relationship counseling.

MCh - Surgical Oncology, FEBS - Fellow of European Board of Surgical Oncology

Its not cancer for sure. Cancer will never cause pain. Its probably related to your age - either because 1] your breasts are enlarging/ growing or 2] related to your menses or 3] Costochondritis - which means a peculiar condition affecting the joint of the ribs under your chest Kindly give more information regarding your menstrual cycle and if the pain is cyclical or non cyclical.

Dear patient, irregular menses, pcod or any uterine troubles are because of hormonal imbalance. You can now safely use homeopathic medicines to get rid of pcod or fibroid uterus. You need mensoreg syrup with constitutional medicine to get rid of pcod or fibroid uterus or irregular menses. This can also be successfully used for painful menses.

Orgasm basically depends on the stimulation, during fore play or while having intercourse/masturbation. Meaning the sexual gratification depends on the external factors and the intensity of you being stimulated/aroused by the carassing/touch are pressure on the sexual organs. amongst them the breast and clitoris play major role. while performing the intercourse or manual during masturbation these need to be stimulated. having said this, there is another saying the arousal depends depends not between the thighs, meaning genitals but between ears, meaning brain. so every thing depends on your arousal due to the partner/self stimulation and imagination. But do not expect orgasm to occur every time you have intercourse, because arousal will become less and less as the frequency increase. all the best

If you are sexually active, you must get a pregnancy test done. Sometimes, because of hormonal disturbances, stress, environmental changes, periods may get delayed but if it has become a routine then it needs to be evaluated.

Hello, It is common to experience delay and slight irregularity in cycles till 3-6 months post marriage as hormonal re-adjustment occurs post first intercourse. So if menses are regular and for 2-3 days, its normal and not to be worried about.
