He wants her mother to feed him round the clock even if he is not hungry also, if she moves or sleep for while he will start crying. We are very tensed. Please suggest us what to do and how to understand our son problem.

Hi Mr. lybrate-user ask the mother to not to feed frequently and do demand feeding with proper position minimum 2-3 hrs gap in between and to feed one side completely and go for otherside. Follow this if that is not getting settled consult local pediatrician.

Baby girl aged 2 years had slight temperature for the last two days, she was administered acetominofin and she is under control, but yesterday we observed a slight swelling on the lower part behind her ear. What might be the reason for this. This is not paining and she is quite normal otherwise.

Could be a simple lymph node. Very common in this age group. Its normal. If its not painful then its not a cause of concern. Its normal physiology of childhood. Dont waste your time and money on it. Let it be.

Hello, There is nothing to worry. You can just slightly keep the neck of your baby tilted to avoid choking. Do not put the baby to sleep immediately after the feed. Burping is very important.

5 Foods That'll Help Increase Your Child's Height Naturally

5 Foods That'll Help Increase Your Child's Height Naturally

Did you know that there are certain foods that increase your child's height naturally? Foods that are rich in essential nutrients such as Vitamins, Calcium, Zinc, Magnesium etc can prove to be highly instrumental in adding extra inches to your child's height. Read on...

1. Whole Grains - Whole grains are rich sources of Zinc, Magnesium and Vitamin B, which play a very vital role in promoting your child's growth during his/her budding years. Additionally, whole grains also contain calories and carbohydrates, which ensure the maintenance of proper weight in your child, imparting him/her with the requisite energy to go on throughout the day. Feed your child whole-grain breads, cereals and pastas to make him healthier and taller.

2. Milk - Milk contains calcium and Vitamin D, which help in bone development during the growing years of a child, besides increasing his/her physical strength. Milk also helps in assimilating different proteins making it one of the best foods to be consumed by your child for attaining a good height. Three servings of milk, or milk products such as cheese or yoghurt, each day will suffice your child's Vitamin D and calcium requirement.

3. Fruits and Vegetables - Fruits are excellent sources of Vitamin A, which is instrumental in ensuring an enhanced rate of bone growth in your child, consequently making him/her taller. You can include carrots, mangoes, sweet potatoes, spinach etc. in your child?s diet to aid his/her height growth. It's advisable to provide him/her with 3 to 5 servings of fruits and vegetables every day.

4. Eggs - To ensure that your child grows taller naturally, providing him/her with a protein rich diet is very crucial. Eggs contain ample amount of protein needed to keep your child energetic throughout the day and help him/her grow taller. One to two eggs per day is considered to be the ideal intake amount for a child.

5. Soybeans - Soybeans are rich sources of protein and help in enhancing the growth of bones and muscles of your child, which in turn adds to his/her height during the budding years. You can cook various soybean dishes or you can add ground soybean powder to the dough while making rotis to make soybean a part of your child?s diet.

Although a child's height is also dependent on his/her genes, a well balanced diet containing these super-foods will increase your child's chances of growing to the fullest to attain a good height.

Delivery done for my wife 5 days before. But breast milk was not producing adequately. So insufficient diet for baby. can milk formation be done by some food? Any other diet can be given?

MD - Obstetrtics & Gynaecology
Gynaecologist, Mumbai
Milk supply is dependent on stimulation by the baby provides while feeding. More you breastfeed your baby, more milk will be produced. Try to feed your baby more often if your milk supply is less. Pumping your breasts after feeding also can stimulate more milk production. Two main causes of less breastmilk supply is poor latch or scheduled feeding. Baby should not nipple feed, rather should breastfeed. Baby should have wide open mouth and the nipple should go towards back of the mouth. There are certain medicines which can increase quantity of milk. If your child is sleeping well and active with your milk then milk is adequate for the baby. A substance that increases milk supply is called a galactagogue. Some of the most commonly used herbal galactagogues are fenugreek, blessed thistle, and alfalfa. There are also several prescription medications that can increase milk supply. Domperidone and metoclopramide increase the production of prolactin and thereby breast milk also. Shatavari powder is an ayurvedic preparation that can increase milk production.

Mucus and blood in loose stool means dysentery. Get a routine stool test done and show it to a pediatrician. An antibiotic or anti amoeba drug or both will be prescribed.

Top Five Myths about Hearing loss

Bachelor of Audiology & Speech Language Pathology (B.A.S.L.P)
Audiologist, Gurgaon

Hearing health has come a long way in the last 10 years, yet there are still a lot of misconceptions about hearing loss. Do you think hearing loss only affects the elderly? or maybe you believe your primary care physician can tell you if you have a hearing loss during a routine physical. Do you believe hearing aids will give you back normal hearing or that your health won't be affected if you have hearing loss in just one ear? how about this myth: hearing loss is a consequence of aging - and there's nothing anyone can do about it.

If you recognize your school of thought when you read any of these five myths, it's time to change your perspective. There's no reason misconceptions should stand in the way of hearing your best.

1)Hearing loss only affects the elderly.

In fact, teens and young adults are at risk for developing a very preventable type of hearing loss. Noise-induced hearing loss (nihl) is one of the most common causes of hearing loss, affecting approximately 26 million americans between the ages of 20 and 69. According to the centers for disease control and prevention (cdc), as many as 16 percent of teens age 12 to 19 have reported some hearing loss which may be caused by loud noise. Approximately 20 percent of americans - around 48 million americans - report some degree of hearing loss. Additionally, hearing loss occurs in five out of every 1, 000 newborns each year in the united states. Hearing loss can be caused by any number of factors: ototoxic medication, environmental factors, disease or genetics. In some cases, the cause of hearing loss is simply unknown.

2) My primary physician will tell me if my hearing is failing.

The last time you went for a physical, did your doctor perform a hearing test on you? chances are he or she didn't, because very few doctors do. Your doctor relies on you to bring any health problems to light just as much as you rely on your doctor to do the same. Since your general practitioner is only so well-versed in specific areas of the body, you should have your hearing checked routinely by a hearing health practitioner, just as you have your vision checked or your teeth cleaned.

Hearing health professionals are specifically educated and trained to administer hearing tests, diagnose hearing loss and prescribe treatment. If you notice your hearing has diminished, find a hearing healthcare professional in your area and make an appointment. At the very least, you will have established a relationship with someone you trust who now has a baseline of how well you hear. If you visit them annually, just like you do your primary care physician, they'll be able to detect any hearing loss as it occurs.

3) I notice a difference in one ear, but the other is fine so I'm ok.

Your brain is a thing of wonder. If the hearing in one ear starts to fade, your brain will adapt to the changes, at least up to a certain point. Your hearing loss could be well-advanced before you even notice a difference. There are countless stories of people who were oblivious to the extent of their hearing loss before they finally admitted they needed hearing aids. A regular hearing test can help track your hearing capability.

Here's another brain fact. Your brain is so involved with your sense of hearing, it can 'forget' how to hear certain sounds if the auditory pathways become damaged and hearing loss is untreated. That's one of the reasons why it's important not only to have your hearing checked regularly, but to seek treatment once hearing loss has been diagnosed.

Untreated hearing loss has also been associated with dementia, social isolation, depression and anxiety - other good reasons to see your hearing healthcare professional as soon as you notice you are not hearing well.

4) Hearing aids will restore my hearing to normal levels.

Today's hearing aids are technological marvels. Their sensitive microphones can focus on speech while tuning out background noise, they can be programmed with the touch of a smartphone, and they work in tandem with many other personal electronic devices in our lives. The one thing hearing aids can't do; however, is restore your hearing to 'normal.' as much as we've learned about how our sense of hearing works, there is no man-made device that can completely replicate human hearing.

The good news? hearing aids can significantly improve your ability to hear well, which leads to enhanced communication with family, friends and co-workers. The key is to work closely with your hearing healthcare professional to make sure your hearing aids help you hear your best in each of your personal listening environments.

5) My hearing loss cannot be helped.

Have you asked a hearing health practitioner about your hearing loss? many forms of hearing loss can indeed be improved, whether it be by hearing aids, surgery, medication or a simple ear wax removal procedure. You'll never know if you never ask. And, if it's been a few years since you've seen a hearing healthcare professional, consider making another appointment. The field of hearing health is rapidly changing. Hearing loss that was difficult to address even a few years ago may be treatable now.

Gynaecologist,
Im feeding my baby she is 11 month now. My legs become numb when ever I sit down or take my baby on my lab. I can not...
When you sit crosslegged and taking your child on your lap, there could be atemporary reduction in blood flow to the legs and this could be due to weight gain or nerve compression or blood vessel compression. For your height, of 5.3 feet, your weight is ok, so may be the problems could be due to cramps in muscles and this can be best helped by sitting with legs straight if you sit crosslegged, you must change position everyf ew minutes to allow good blood flow. If tingling numbness if there, it signifies vitamin or calcium deficiency and its better to meet a doctor before popping a pill generally many pregnant women take calcium off and on in pregnancy but do not take calcium in postd elivery period. If you are still feeding your child or if you have not taken calcium in the post delivery period, perhaps you must visit the gynecologist who will evaluate you and provide the necessary treatments.

My son Jeremy is 14 months old and his fontanelle has still not closed. What can I do? He has also not started to walk.

DHMS (Diploma in Homeopathic Medicine and Surgery)
Homeopath, Ludhiana
My son Jeremy is 14 months old and his fontanelle has still not closed. What can I do? He has also not started to walk.
The Anterior fontanelle (AF) is simply an area on top of a baby’s head where the various bony plates that make up the skull have not yet come together. The fact that a newborn’s skull isn’t one solid bone at birth, but rather comprised of several bony plates is not just useful, but necessary, as it allows a newborn’s head to adjust enough in size to pass through the birth canal and then allow the skull to expand as babies’ brains grow considerably throughout the first year.------------AF is generally between 3 to 6 centimeters diameter during the first 6 months of life, and gradually gets smaller thereafter—closing some time between the ages of 10 and 25 months old. Any babies who are born prematurely, however, may have their anterior fontanelles close even later. -------So your question is of little concern right now and nothing to worry about-----------------------
