The milk teeth of every child need to be cleaned thoroughly. For this purpose they should use a toothbrush with a small round head and soft bristles.

I get bad breath from my mouth sometimes which is really frustrating because I have to interact with many people as per my professional requirement. Need assistance on the same.

BDS
Dentist, Vadodara
Bad breath is due to accumulation of plaque on teeth, decay teeth, dry mouth, smoking, tobacco chewing, consumption of caffeinated or aerated beverages, oilly n spicy food, sore throat, bad digestion. Go for scaling and polishing of teeth. Use mouthwash twice daily after brushing. Maintain proper oral hygiene. Increase your water intake.

I think a couple of my teeth look like they have cavity. A small black spot which is almost negligible though. Is there any way to heal them without going to a dentist clinic

BDS
Dentist, Asansol
Hello, As you said , some of your teeth have cavity. Teeth with cavity can be restored easily with suitable filling material. . But for that you need to visit your dentist. But once you leave that cavity as it is, you may have pain and sensitivity in the future. So to avoid all such complications you should immediately get you teeth restored.

Respected doctors, I have gum problem and also bad smell of mouth, please help me to come out of this problem. Please advise.

MDS - Orthodontics, BDS
Dentist,
Smell from the mouth may be due to conditions present in the mouth and from stomach. Conditions in the mouth are poor oral hygiene i. E presence of plaque and tartar, poor salivary flow, or may be due to some gum infections. Problems from stomach may be due gastritis. Dehydration is also a common cause. Drinking adequate water may also relieve this. Kindly consult your dentist for further clarifications and wish a confident smile.

Mouthwash: All You Need to Know About it

BDS
Dentist, Gurgaon
Mouthwash: All You Need to Know About it

Mouthwash has become an essential ingredient of one's oral hygiene kit. Though not a substitute for flossing or brushing, it offers additional oral protection. Due to a host of ingredients, such as alcohol,
Chlorhexidine, cetylpyridinium chloride, menthol, methyl salicylate, fluoride, antibacterial enzymes, hydrogen peroxide, essential oils, zinc chloride and other herbs and "natural" ingredients mouthwash has a number of benefits.

Alcohol is the basic ingredient in all of them. While fluoride protects against decay, chlorhexidine protects against gum diseases. Hydrogen peroxide produces a mild bleaching effect. Herbs and essential oils produce a freshening effect.

Benefits of using a mouthwash

1. Reduces formation of tartar and plaque.
2. Protects from oral problems like gingivitis and periodontal disease, especially if it contains cetylpyridinium or essential oils. Chlorhexidine is also effective in protecting plaque formation and gingivitis.
3. Kills bacteria in the mouth and prevents cavities or decay, especially if it contains fluoride.
4. Mouthwash, to some extent, covers up bad breath due to oral hygiene or oral disease and produces a fresher breath.
5. Certain mouthwashes containing cetylpyridinium chloride and zinc chloride produce a better breath freshening effect.
6. Helps manage dry mouth, especially if containing biotene.

Types of Mouthwash

1. Cosmetic
2. Therapeutic

The cosmetic one is usually for freshening up the breath and is not regulated by the FDA. The therapeutic ones contain active ingredients aimed at addressing one of the issues like plaque formation, bad breath, dry mouth, or decay. They kill bacteria, reduce plaque, fight gingivitis, and control decay. They are not a substitute for brushing or flossing but supplement these two very well. These are approved by FDA and are proven in terms of safety and efficacy. Rinses with zinc chloride are effective against bad breath, those with fluoride are useful in people who are cavity-prone, and chlorhexidine helps prevent gum disease.

Choosing a mouthwash: This depends on the oral health condition, and it is always advisable that the dentist prescribes the right rinse for you.

When and how to use mouthwash: When you are done with your brushing and flossing, rinse your mouth with a capful of the mouthwash liquid. Swish it around your mouth for about 30 seconds and spit it out. Avoid brushing, drinking water, or rinsing your mouth after using a mouthwash for about 15 to 20 minutes. This will give sufficient time for the active ingredients in the mouthwash (especially if it is a therapeutic one) to act in the mouth. Brushing after mouthwash removes all the effect of the rinse.

I have a small reddish painless bump underneath my tongue. Can you tell me the reason for that bump.

MBBS, Diploma in Venerology & Dermatology (DVD)
Dermatologist, Delhi
Red bumps on or underneath the tongue can be alarming. At the very least, they are the result of eating too many acidic or sugary foods and at the most they could be a sign of disease. In most cases, these bumps are merely a nuisance. Most of the time, red bumps underneath your tongue or anywhere in your mouth have probably been caused by irritation. If you've recently eaten something very sugary, salty or acidic, bumps may form in the mouth. In some cases, a red bump under the tongue may be exostosis. This occurs when extra bone forms in the lower jaw and presses into the tender underside of the tongue. If you eat hard or crunchy foods and accidentally poke this bump, it can get irritated. These bumps may take a while to heal. Should the red bumps under your tongue get worse, last longer than a couple of weeks, bleed or get so painful that you can't eat, see your doctor for a thorough diagnosis to determine the exact cause. He may also prescribe a stronger oral gel to ease your suffering.

Hello lybrate-user, thanks for your query. Well have you ever wonder why we call wisdom tooth wisdom, because it comes at age, at which person has gain wisdom. Well you will surprise to know that in most of people this tooth serves no function at all. It's like a vestigial organ just like apendix so if it's causing problem get it removed. It might damage adjacent teeth which will cause you more problem. So get it removed once for all and the best part is unlike other tooth you need not to replace it. It won't effect your jaw structure. Taking antibiotics might develop resistance in your body, so don't misuse drugs as it might harm you in your future life. I hope my suggestion would help you and soon you will get rid of your wisdom teeth. Thanks and regards.

Hello sir im chinmay of age 26 I had too much pain in my teeth and swelling too please hepl me thank you.
Toothache is mainly due to carious lesion or periodontal problem. First we have to identify the cause then we can start the treatment part. For pain relief, you can take an analgesic. Also start warm saline gargles. If the problem persist, you need to consult a dentist for more specific diagnosis and treatment would be tailored accordingly.
