Dear sir/madam, I want some suggestion. Which vegitables or which type of food I should take to prevent the high production of uric acid. Because I had a very hard pain in my gouts due to excess of uric acid in my body.

MBBS, DGO (cal)
General Physician,
Very pertinent question. Please tell and educate your friends about gout and food. 1) please do not take any uricosuric medicines for gout during acute inflammatory stage. These medicines itself may flare up gout. Only nsaids to reduce inflammation. 2) diets and dos nad donts: although there are no foods that do not contain uric acid itself, people who are concerned with reducing the level of uric acid in their body should know which foods contain high levels of purine. A) take plenty of oral fluid at least 3 - 4 liters per day. It helps to wash away uric acid from your systems through kidney and prevents to form crystals and precipitate in synovial cavities of the joints. Urinary alkalinisation (making urine alkaline) - promotes uric acid solubility. B) avoid all animal proteins (particularly red meat) and stop taking any animal organs like liver, kidneys etc. Occasional (avoiding is good) small fishes and small amount of chicken is allowed. C) avoid all vegetable seed particularly - spinach, tomato, brinjal, pulses etc. Strain or separate it out before cooking. Though beans are also contains purine but less. Beans in moderate quantity and soybeans do not harm that much. D) avoid bread - many bread products have yeast, a main ingredient that has excessive quantities of purine. Yeast creates a hostile environment in the body by disrupting its acidity. You could develop kidney stones and bladder problems. Chapati is best alternative. E) avoid asparagus and mushrooms - because of high uric acid content. F) avoid high oxalate containing food - that facilitates formation of kidney stone in presence of uric acid. G) a higher level of consumption of dairy products is associated with a decreased risk. H) moderate intake of purine-rich vegetables or protein is not associated with an increased risk of gout. Remember - a raised blood urate (hyperuricaemia) with no symptoms does not mean a patient will inevitably develop gout. A medicine thiazide diuretic raises uric acid level, may not produce gout. If gout develops however then it is prudent to stop thiazide. Raised uric acid is associated with other factors such as hypertension, dehydration, hyperlipidaemia there is also a theoretical risk of hyperuricaemia with low carbohydrate diets, due to higher protein content. Hope this shall be helpful. Please let me know whether it has enriched you.

lybrate-user, You are overweight with a BMI of 28.87 kg/M2, which very close to be a grade 1 obesity. You will have to take some specific measures and see that weight is reduced (ideal body weight 52 kgs). If Vit D is less then take the supplement of it. There is nothing like a specific time for exposure to sun. Early morning sun rays should fall on the skin. You may take calcium and D3 supplements. Thanks.

Combat Diabetes with These Ayurvedic Remedies

Diabetes is a condition wherein the sugar levels in your blood increases significantly. This happens when the sugar you consume from food is not efficiently processed by the body thus, raising your blood sugar levels. An excess concentration of sugar in the blood can make you prone to various health complications.

Symptoms
The symptoms of diabetes include frequent urge to urinate, increased thirst, increased hunger and rapid weight loss, combined with fatigue and irritability. Diabetes can also cause problems in the eyes, such as blurred vision as well as make you prone to cataracts and even glaucoma (in very rare cases). With diabetes, any injury or body sore tends to take a lot of time to heal.

Causes
Diabetes is a disorder that occurs due to impaired insulin functioning. Insulin is a hormone that is produced by pancreas, which is located right below the stomach. Diabetes, when occurs as a result of insufficient production of insulin by the pancreas, is known as Type 1 Diabetes. In this type, the immune cells in the body attack the cells in the pancreas, which produce insulin, thus discouraging insulin secretion.
Another kind is the Type 2 diabetes, which occurs when the cells in the body become insulin resistant. Most cases of diabetes are of this particular type, as one of the major reasons behind this is following an erratic lifestyle devoid of healthy habits.

Gestational diabetes is the third type, although it isn’t very common. During pregnancy, the various hormones that are secreted in the body can play spoilsport with the functioning of the pancreas, thus the production of insulin. This leads to a drastic rise in blood sugar levels.

Ayurvedic treatment

  1. Eat healthy: Eating healthy assumes the maximum importance; you need to eat healthy in order to control diabetes effectively. Include plenty of fruits and vegetables in the diet, but make sure to pick foods that contain little sugar. Fruits such as bananas and grapes are not the best options for a diabetic. Rather, one should consider cucumber and bitter gourd in such circumstances.
  2. Exercise regularly: Regular exercise can keep your body weight at optimal levels which goes a long way in preventing and controlling symptoms of diabetes. Besides being good for your heart, cardiovascular exercises such as running bring down the excess glucose levels in the blood.
  3. Limit stress: Stress is very harmful for the body as it reduces your immunity against diseases and infections. Leading a stressful life can make you prone to a variety of disorders, diabetes being one of them. Relaxation techniques such as meditation and yoga can help one deal with stress effectively. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult an ayurveda.

What is the current treatment? best is to takachie basal analogue insulin like injection basalog. Start with 10 units in the morning add two units on alternate days if target level is not achieved. You have to do self monitoring of sugar levels every day. Tight sugar control is must at your age. Also control your weight and food intake.

It is recommended that honey and lemon juice be taken early morning which is beneficial to health in more than anyway. My question is can a diabetic patient can take this?

MBBS, CCEBDM, Diploma in Diabetology
Endocrinologist, Hubli-Dharwad
Mr. Sitapati lybrate-user, There are a lot of benefits claimed about honey and lemon juice. It is very difficult to scientifically substantiate all those. Basically lemon juice has a fair amount of vitamin C, plus honey is basically similar to sugar, with some antioxidant properties. If one wants this can be had. In case of a diabetic person quantity honey has to be very limited because it is just sugar. Thanks.
