I am suffering from bad snoring while sleeping. Some time very loud. I think its sleep apnea, something very normally...
Hi, please follow these tips to stop snoring: - reduce your weight if you are obese. - perform pranayama (breathing exercises) everyday. - quit smoking which irritates the mucosal layer of the nose and throat and causes blockage and results in snoring. - quit alcohol and sedatives which relax the throat muscles and results in snoring. - sleep on sides instead on back. - elevate the head by using a thick pillow which eases the breathing. - clear the nose before going to bed. - establish regular sleep pattern. - keep the bedroom air moist by using humidifier; as dry air irritates the mucosal membrane in the nose and throat. - perform throat exercises like repeating the vowels a, e, i, o, you loudly for 2-3 mins few times a day or keeping the tongue behind the teeth and moving it backwards - 3-4 times a day. - anti snoring appliances can also be used.

My wife is taking tegrital (Carbamazepine) 200 mg daily, earlier she was taking 600 mg daily but gradually reduced to 200. This medicine she is taking since the age of 12 due to seizures, and now she is 46 years old. The last attach had happened almost 15 years ago, hence my question is that she will continue the medicine or should stop it.

MBBS, Master In Health Science
Neurologist, Mumbai
You should talk to an epilepsy specialist before stopping it. The chances of seizure recurrence after stopping medications is about 50-50. Studying earlier Mris and repeating the eeg might help in predicting if she needs to continue taking medications.

I am suffering from migraine and time to time it becomes worse. Please help how to cure and get rid of it.

Bachelor of Ayurveda, Medicine and Surgery (BAMS)

Hello Dear, Headache is caused mainly due to the changes in blood flow in the arteries and veins. There are so many theories but still it is mainly due to dilated blood vessels. Have you done any investiagtions as you are having for a long time? When the pain is present in one side it is generally migraine. Migriane has other symptoms like nausea, vomiting, dizziness, aura, dullness, restlessness. You can take Varunadi Kasayam - 10 ml with 40 ml of warm water, Cephagraine tablets, Anu thailam, Balahatadi thailam for head, Zandu balm to apply in the forehead. Eat healthy food with vegetables and fruits. Find out the triggers and avoid it like cheese, wine, onion, dairy, chicken, caffeine, pickles or fermented foods. Reduce fried fatty foods. Avoid sleeping too much, crying, skipping meals. Sleep well and relax. Exercise regularly.

Most likely, the cause of your symptoms are disc bulge. The best treatment at this stage is physiotherapy. Medications such as pregabalin and gabapentin are also helpful.

Migraine can be managed with lifestyle changes and medications, try muscle relaxation exercises. Relaxation may help ease the pain of a migraine headache. Get enough sleep, but don't oversleep. Get an adequate amount of sleep each night. It's best to go to bed and wake up at regular times, as well. Rest and relax. If possible, rest in a dark, quiet room when you feel a headache coming on. Place an ice pack wrapped in a cloth on the back of your neck and apply gentle pressure to painful areas on your scalp. It is very important keep a headache diary. Continue keeping your headache diary even after you see doctor. It will help you learn more about what triggers your migraines and what treatment is most effective. A dose of riboflavin in appropriate dose as prescribed under supervision, also may prevent migraines or reduce the frequency of headaches. Coenzyme q10 supplements may decrease the frequency of migraines, magnesium supplements may also be used to treat migraines.

DM - Neurology, MD - General Medicine, MBBS

There are no medication which can improve swallowing. Swallowing excercises can help in improving swallow to some extent. If improvement is inadequate, its better to got for peg insertion, in which a minor surgery will be done and feeds can be given directly into stomach.

You Might Be At Risk Too! Know Your Chances Of Developing A Brain Tumor
Symptoms you might have a brain tumor

Brain tumour at times displays warning symptoms and at times, none. The tumour pressing on to any specific part of the brain is becoming common symptom. A tumor could be a simple headache, if it persists and doesn't seem normal, it should be tested by a specialist rather than resorting to home remedies.

Here is when you must get tested for a brain tumour:

1. Severe headaches: headaches which are at their worst early in the mornings or after any activity.

2. Many people experience seizures of different kinds. It includes:

A. Myclonic - which are single or multiple spasms, jerks and muscle twitches
B. Tonic-glonic - which shows signs like loss of consciousness, loss of body function control, and not being able to breathe for about 30 seconds and turning blue which is followed by weakness, numbness or sore muscles.
C. Sensory - which is a change in smell, vision, hearing and/or sensation. The person doesn't lose consciousness in this symptom.
D. Complex partial - where a person may have lose of awareness. Another symptom is partial or complete loss of consciousness.

3. Changes in memory and personality.

4. Vomiting and/or nausea

5. Unexplained fatigue

6. Other very specific symptoms of brain tumour might look like these:

A. Change in vision. This could include partial loss of vision or double visibility.
B. Numbness or weakness of face muscles and difficulty in swallowing.
C. Headache caused due to pressure on the tumour.
D. Changes in motor skills and loss of judgment.

I have surfing from migraine. Sometime headache is out of control. How can I relief it.

PDDM, MHA, MBBS
General Physician, Nashik
You can use crocin or anacin or combiflam etc. (take it only if you have no known drug allergies) here are some tips to prevent a migraine attack: 1. Identify and avoid migraine triggers. You can keep track of your headache patterns and identify headache triggers by using a headache diary. 2. Recall what was eaten prior to an attack to help you identify chemical triggers. 3. Manage stress to prevent or reduce the severity of the migraine attacks. 4. Follow a regular daily routine and get adequate rest. 5. Exercise (in moderation) regularly.

Simple Tips To Overcome Sleeplessness (Insomnia)

BHMS
Homeopath, Delhi
Simple Tips To Overcome Sleeplessness (Insomnia)

@stick to a regular sleep schedule. Support your biological clock by going to bed and getting up at the same time every day, including weekends.

@ avoid naps. Napping during the day can make it more difficult to sleep at night. If you feel like you have to take a nap, limit it to 30 minutes before 3 p. M.

@ limit caffeine, alcohol, and nicotine. Stop drinking caffeinated beverages at least eight hours before bed. While alcohol can make you feel sleepy, it interferes with the quality of your sleep, and nicotine is a stimulant.

@ avoid late meals. Try to avoid heavy, rich foods within two hours of bed. Fatty foods can take a lot of work for your stomach to digest and spicy or acidic foods can cause heartburn.

@ get regular exercise. Regular exercise can improve the symptoms of insomnia, but it's not a quick fix. It takes several months to feel the full effects. Aim for 30 minutes or more of activity on most days but not too close to bedtime.

@ develop a better bedtime routine

@ it's not just what you do during the day that affects the quality of your sleep, but also those things you do to prepare your mind and body for sleep.
@make sure your bedroom is quiet, dark, and cool. Noise, light, and heat can interfere with sleep. Try using a sound machine or earplugs to hide outside noise, an open window or fan to keep the room cool, and blackout curtains or a sleep mask to block out light.

@avoid stimulating activity and stressful situations before bedtime. This includes vigorous exercise, big discussions or arguments, or catching up on work. Instead, focus on quiet, soothing activities, such as reading, knitting, or listening to soft music, while keeping lights low.

@ turn off screens one hour before bedtime. The light emitted from tv, tablets, smartphones, and computers suppresses your body's production of melatonin and can severely disrupt your sleep. Instead of emailing, texting, watching tv, or playing video games, try listening to a book on tape, a podcast, or reading by a soft light.

If by following these measures, still if there is difficulty to get a sound sleep, homeopathic medicines can be taken for some time to relax the body and assist in getting sleep. These medicines do not have any side effects and are not habit forming. There are various medicines to help insomnia, viz. Passiflora, kali phos, piscidia, nux, coffea, etc, but there prescription depends on individual case.

My hand got injured due to accident in the year 2001. I have no sensation in my thumb, index finger & middle finger. I had been operated once in the said year by an orthopaedic surgeon. But still, I don't feel any sensation in my above 3 fingers. My median nerve, radial nerve got damaged. Is it possible to get back my sensation after 15 years?

MD - Psychiatry, MBBS
Psychiatrist, Patna
Dear . Nerve injuries take many years to decades for recovery. It depends upon the gap in between to ends of a damaged nerve. Only few millimeters growth occurs in a year. It may take few more years to get your sensations back. I wish you all the best.

Types Of Behavioral And Emotional Disorders In Children

Types Of Behavioral And Emotional Disorders In Children

Are you aware of behavioral and emotional disorders in children? During the developmental years of a child, constant growth and change are signified. This fact should be strictly kept in mind while dealing with behavioral and emotional disorders in children. Brain disorders like bipolar disorder, depression and anxiety disorders may affect any child during early childhood. The assistance of a mental health professional should be taken while dealing with these problems. On a global scale, almost 15% of children suffer from behavioral disorders. Among the different forms of behavioral disorders, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) accounts for being one of the most common ones.

Here is a list of the different forms of behavioral and emotional disorders, which are observed in children:

  1. ADHD- This common mental disorder in children is more common in boys than in girls. Commonly, children affected with this disorder are unable to finish familiar tasks, plan or sit still. They may even lose awareness about what goes around them. ADHD-affected children may seem fine on some days, but on other days, they may experience disorganized and frenzied activities. This disorder may continue into adolescence and adulthood as well. There are several treatment options for ADHD, which may include medications, therapy and educational options.

  2. Autism- Children affected with autism seem to become indifferent, remote and isolated in a world of their own. They are unable to form emotional ties with other people or their peers. Autism is more likely to occur in boys than in girls. The condition may result in language delays, mental retardation, and in some cases, a child may suffer high functioning and usual speech and intelligence. This is because the brain of such children functions differently than others. Consistency is very important for managing autism in children.

  3. Bipolar Disorder- This disorder is most likely to begin in early childhood and it continues into adulthood. It is featured by extreme mood swings in the patient. A child may have extremely high or euphoric feelings, but his mood may turn into depression and sadness all of a sudden. This condition is a genetic illness, and it is often mistaken or misdiagnosed as ADHD.

  4. Anxiety- Anxiety disorders make children feel uneasy, distressed and unusually scared for no appropriate reason. Panic disorders, featured, by intense episodes of fear, which occur without any kind of provocation or signal are a common type of anxiety disorder. OCD or obsessive compulsive disorder, which is repetitive and compulsive in nature, is another type of anxiety disorder.

It is very important to treat and deal with children’s behavioral and emotional disorders at an early stage. Early diagnosis enables an early start of treatment, which prevents further degradation of the condition.
