Follow these simple steps to ensure a good sleep every night and stay away from sleep disorders and other health problems associated with unhealthy sleep habits: 1) maintain a regular sleep routine go to bed at the same time. Wake up at the same time. Ideally, your schedule will remain the same (+/- 20 minutes) every night of the week. A good sleep hygiene routine promotes healthy sleep and daytime alertness. 2) avoid sleeping during the daytime. It can disturb the normal pattern. 3) avoid caffeine, nicotine, and alcohol near bedtime. While alcohol may speed the onset of sleep, it creates problems in he second half of sleep. 4) exercise can promote good sleep. Exercise should be taken in the morning or late afternoon. Yoga, can be done before bed to help. 5) have a quiet, comfortable bedroom. Set your bedroom thermostat at a comfortable temperature. Generally, a little cooler is better than a little warmer. Turn off the tv and other extraneous noise that may disrupt sleep. Background'white noise' like a fan is ok. If your pets awaken you, keep them outside the bedroom. Your bedroom should be dark. Turn off bright lights. Have a comfortable mattress. 6) avoid heavy meals close to bedtime. 7) ensure adequate exposure to natural light. 8) avoid emotionally upsetting conversations and activities before trying to go to sleep. Do not think of, or bring your problems to bed. 9) stop using all your digital devices and stop looking at digital screens be it mobile phones or televisions at least 1 hour before the time you plan to sleep. Instead try reading a fiction book near bedtime so it makes you help realxed and de-stressed. Sleep well live healthy and live longer.

I am 30 year old. I've all the symptoms of getting diabetes like sweating having weight loss, will be getting hungry ...
You should get yourself tested for diabetes. This includes a simple test of fasting blood glucose and a pp blood glucose (ie 1&1/2 to 2 hours after meal). If you do have diabetes, it is better to take medicines than develop complications. The dosage of medicines can be reduced with good healthy lifestyle.

I am having back fat in excess. When I tried to exercise. It strained. please give me solution to this problem.
Hi lybrate-usertips for weight loss eat fresh vegetables daily. Avoid having sugar completely. Eat whole wheat bread instead of white bread; avoid everything made from white flour and make whole wheat bread, chapattis and brown rice a way of life. Do not skip a meal and eat three meals a day. Drink plenty of water to eliminate the toxins from the system. Limit your fat intake to 2-3 teaspoons a day. Increase the fiber intake as it provides a sense of fullness and also prevents hunger pangs. Take antioxidants for protecting the body against the toxins released during weight loss. Exercise catalyzes your efforts to lose weight and even regular walking for thirty minutes can give you the benefits of an aerobics exercise. To improve the metabolism, try increasing the duration, frequency, intensity of your daily workout. Remember that maintaining the ideal weight is a lifetime commitment and not a short-term affair. Firmly believe that the pleasure of being trim and healthy is far better than the pleasure of eating unwisely.

I'm 44 years feels fatigue, tired and not feeling exciting.what is solution for this?

PGDD, RD, Bachelor of Home Science
Dietitian/Nutritionist, Mumbai
Thanks for the query. Feeling tired is majorly due to lack of energy and nutrition. It is important to know that just eating two heavy meals a day will not fulfill your nutrient needs. Most often we skip meals especially when at work or in college. We start our day on empty stomach but our work or stress or activity is never reduced. This causes weakness and lack of energy levels. Food is our source of energy and if you don't eat well as per your needs you are going to get deficient in many nutrients. So, start by eating the right foods at the right time. Eat meals at frequent intervals. Eat a mid meal between each main meal. Avoid junk foods. Include dairy, eggs, nuts, fruits in your meals. Avoid alcohol and smoking. Sleep well.    Exercise at least thrice a week.

This is due to allergic rhinitis. Start tab. Allegra-m daily at night and duonase nasal spray twice a day, steam inhalation also for 2 weeks. If even after that your symptoms are not resolved get a ct scan done to rule out any underlying pathology like polyps in nose.

My wife recently detected thyroid problems. She is about 32 years of AGe and having two children of 4 years and 1 and 1/2 years. Her T3 is 107 ng/dl. T4 is 4.2ug/dl. And TSH is 77.47. What should be the advice?

MBBS, CCEBDM, Diploma in Diabetology
Endocrinologist, Hubli-Dharwad
Hello, looking at the thyroid test report, she has severe hypothyroidism, needs immediate treatment with thyroxine dose depends on weight, tsh levels and t4 level. Plus she has to avoid soy beans, soy containing products, cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, radish, peanuts, mustard and coffee. She should consume more of green leafy vegetables and fruits. She should use whole grain flour for chapati and roti. Avoid refined flour like maida and products made of that. Starting the treatment early is very much essential. Thanks.

BHMS
Homeopath, Faridabad
Bronchitis/ asthma can be treated well with homoeopathic medicines completely, only need to be regular with the medication and avoid those foods/ things to which you are allergic to for sometime. Keep taking your already on going medication, reduce it gradually and slowly once homoeopathic starts acting. Take bakson's astha-aid drops/ 10-15 drops in 1/2 cup water/ thrice d day for 1 month. Report me back after a month.

MD - Dermatology , Venereology & Leprosy

How to Get Rid of Old Pigmentation on Your Face

Melasma, commonly known as skin pigmentation, is a skin disorder, which causes brown and blotchy spots on your face. Everybody craves to have spotless and flawless skin. But usually no one does anything about it. Contrary to popular belief, having perfect skin is not really difficult. You need to religiously follow your skincare regime to keep it healthy and flawless. In case you are suffering from melasma or have skin pigmentation,

Here are a few tips which you can follow:

  1. Apply raw potato on your face: Take a clean and fresh potato. Cut it into two halves and wet the exposed surface with a little water. Rub this on all the affected regions on the face and wash your face after 10 to 15 minutes with lukewarm water. Potatoes are extremely effective in removing pigmentation as they have an enzyme called catecholase, which can help to lighten darkened areas on the skin.
  2. Use apple cider vinegar on your skin: Apple cider vinegar helps to restore the natural color of the skin. It also contains beta-carotene, which helps to treat the damage done to the skin by the atmosphere's free radicals. In fact, one of the famous qualities of apple cider vinegar is to make the skin supple and bright.
  3. Apply aloe vera on your skin: Regular usage of aloe vera on the skin is one of the best and most effective remedies for skin pigmentation. Aloe vera can help clean the skin without harming the natural balance of the skin, as it has marvelous cleansing properties. It helps to reduce spots on your face, and also provides protection against the harmful UV rays of the sun.
  4. A sandalwood pack can also work wonders: Sandalwood acts, both as a stimulant as well as a blood purifier. These two properties of sandalwood help it to treat skin pigmentation. Make a pack using sandalwood and rosewater and apply it to your face at least twice a day to get rid of the pigmentation. Sandalwood is also one of the major ingredients for a sunscreen as it can protect the skin from the harmful UV rays.
  5. Keep an eye on what you eat: Your diet plays a very crucial part when it comes to the wellbeing of your skin. Make sure that you add a lot of green leafy vegetables and foods rich in Vitamin A and C to maintain your healthy skin. Drink lots of water and eat a lot of fruits in order to keep your skin hydrated. This will also detoxify your body.

Follow the above tips and ensure yourself a spotlessly beautiful skin.

Top 7 Mental Health Applications For Your Smart Phone
The smartphone revolution has changed our lives in many ways. With several adults and even teenagers relying more on their smartphones for information online, doctors are also turning to mental health apps or mhapps to share their medical knowledge with users. Frequent use of technology has created a better avenue for communication - in this case between doctors and patients that is beneficial for both.

Here are the top 7 mental health apps that can be used by patients to improve their mental health:

Code blue: bullying is a real problem that has led many down the path of depression and suicide. And sometimes, the solution to this problem is much easier than you think, and with smartphones, it's just a click away. With the code blue app, you can choose people from your contact to be a part of your support group. With just a few clicks, the app will alert the support group if you need their help. The app communicates the user's location to the group, and the group can also indicate that the help is on the way.
Breath2relax: feeling too anxious or angry? want to let your bad side take over the situation? hold on and downloaded breath2relax on your phone to browse through a series of breathing exercises. These will help you in reducing stress, stabilizing your mood, controlling anger, and managing the anxiety. The important aspect of this app is that it can be operated independently.
Lantern: lantern is a web-and-mobile-based platform that combines the cognitive behavioral therapy (cbt) techniques with advices from real experts. The app starts by measuring the your strengths, weaknesses, stress, anxiety, mood and social behavior, and then tailors daily exercises that suit your pattern. Next, the app matches your score with a professional cbt coach who can answer all the related questions you have.
Ptsd coach: ptsd stands for post traumatic stress disorder. Ptsd coach is an app developed by the department of veterans affairs at national center for ptsd. It is intended for use by veterans, military personnel, and civilians experiencing symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder. The app provides a self assessment tool that tracks stress symptoms over a period of time. It also connects with the support group from the contact list, and locates nearby treatment programs.
Optimism: optimism is a family of applications that focuses on self-tracking as a tool for coping with mental illnesses like depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety, and ptsd. Users can record the intensity of their mood, which will eventually detect patterns and help identify problem triggers. You can create a customizable wellness plan to chart the coping mechanisms, which will come from experience and with better understanding of the mental condition.
Talkspace: this free app helps users connect with a therapists with whom they can chat anytime. It isn't exactly a substitute to in-person therapy, but more like a precursor where the app's therapists can monitor and guide the users if they need more advanced help.
Big white wall: sometimes, just knowing that others are also sailing in the same boat gives you the much needed courage to fight with the problem. The app does the same for you by acting as a community where users with different type of mental health problems come together for discussion boards, reference articles and self-assessment tests.
