My father went a heart By-Pass surgery in October 2006. He is doing well now and is 67. However, he has issues with climbing stairs even for one store and gets tired too easily. What are the medical measures he needs to carefully undertake in order to keep himself fit ? Also , is there a likelihood of another surgery 10 years after one surgery ?

There are other effective, safe and economical non-invasive, non-surgical options like Artery Clearance Therapy (ACT) / Chelation therapy and External Counter Pulsation (ECP/EECP) for patients unfit for heart bypass surgery or angioplasty stents, where these have failed, when there is recurrence after surgery or stents get blocked again and for patients who want to avoid surgery. A diabetic person has to consume food like everyone else. However, total calories have to be restricted based on one's weight, sugar levels and amount of exercise done per day. You have not mentioned the sugar levels at all, secondly no info on level of physical activity. Further, you are overweight with a bmi of 27.7 kg/m2. Hence, your diet has to provide you a maximum of 1400 calories per day. I can not actually prescribe the whole diet here, but please keep in mind to avoid sweets, deep fried foods and fruits like mango, chikkoos, grapes and bananas. Consume more green vegetables and salads, whole grain flours, and eat more frequently but less quantity at a time.

Hello dear patient. High cholesterol can cause atherosclerotic heart disease or narrowed coronary arteries in the heart can cause the symptoms of angina, when theheart muscle is not provided with enough oxygen to function. Decreased blood supply to the brain may be due to narrowed small arteries in the brain or because the larger carotidarteries in the neck may become blocked. This can result in a transient ischmic attack or stroke. Peripheral artery disease describes gradual narrowing of the arteries that supply the legs. During exercise , if the legs do not get enough blood supply, they can develop pain , called claudication . Other arteries in the body may also be affected by plaque buildup causing them to narrow, including the mesenteric arteries to the intestine and the renal arteries to the kidney. Avoid fast foods, oily foods, junk foods, alcohol, smoking, fatty foods, non-veg.,avoid stress, take flax oil, omega-3 fatty meal or cap., take .green veg., whole grain.garlic,. Take anti cholesterol medicines .

When all the reports related to heart are normal it is less likely to be cardiac. The cervical x ray shows involvement of nerve roots supplying areas on chest, back, shoulders, axilla etc hence the pain is most likely to be neuaralgia. Stretch your neck and avoid forward bending of neck. If needed a cervical collar may be used to prevent forward bending of neck. Do not use pillows below head and do not sit in or lie down in abnormal postures in sofas while viewing television. This will definitely help in reducing your pain.

Mr. Lybrate-user, usually a minimum of 30 minutes a day of physical activity is recommended to keep fit and prevent adding additional weight. So the amount of exercise being done by you (cycling) appears to be good enough. But still if you walk for another 20 minutes a day, that will add to keep fit as well as remain free from diabetes. Thanks for the question.

Mr. Lybrate-user, when diabetes is not in control, blood glucose level goes up. If glucose level goes over 180 mg/100 ml, then it appears in the urine. If still higher level is there in the blood then more glucose is filtered in to urine. When glucose is present in the bladder, it draws more water through omosis, this fills the urinary bladder more often. This causes more urge to urinate at nkigt. Hence strict blood sugar control is the only option in reducing urination at night. Plus uncotrolled diabetes also causes more thirst and water intake increases, it also contributes.

Dear lybrateuser, -The solution to your problem is that you stop drinking altogether, stop drinking at the point where your problem starts as this is a adverse reaction to the alcohol intake, it can become serious like dizziness, headache & collapse, so better would be to avoid intake.
