The Ideal Diet after a Kidney Transplant

A kidney transplant is a surgical procedure where your kidneys are cleansed and rebuild using the kidneys of a deceased person, in order to flush out the excessive waste fluids from the kidneys. It is of paramount importance and your dietary patterns and lifestyle should be altered after you go through a kidney transplant. Your dietician will help you out by preparing your diet chart to clearly list out the foods that you should consume and those which you should avoid after the surgery. The diet chart that would be prepared for you would be highly subjective and it would totally depend on your lifestyle, medical history, family health records, genetically transmitted conditions and such others. Apart from improving the condition of your kidney and assisting your transplant, the diet chart will also help you to lose weight, boost your metabolism and enhance your immune system. Some of the most common recommendations that your dietician may give you are as follows:

  • Eating at least 5 full servings of fresh fruits and vegetables each day as both are an important part of a healthy diet for a person who has just undergone a kidney transplant. The vegetables should mostly be eaten after cooking/boiling as per the suggestions of your dietician.
  • Having enough of fiber rich foods in your daily diet is essential as it speeds up the process of digestion and prevents constipation by promoting frequent and easy bowel movements.
  • If you are a non-vegetarian, then you should be going for lean meat alternatives which are low on fat and high on nutritional value. Examples of such meat are fishes and poultry. Additionally, you should also avoid all kinds of red meat as it is high on fat.
  • Consume low-fat milk and dairy products as they help to prevent the fat accumulation inside the body and also maintain an acceptable level of calcium and phosphorus inside your body.
  • Maintain a low level of iodized salt in your meals, as it helps to keep your blood pressure under control.
  • Over the counter health supplements like vitamins and proteins can also be taken, if recommended by your dietician.

You must get culture of the urine done and treat it appropriately. Otherwise it may lead to longterm complications.

Sir, I have 6 mm stone in Both kidney, Can it Remove through Urination? And How? What Care I take? Please Answer only Kidney specialised person. Thanking You.

BHMS
Homeopath,
Sir, I have 6 mm stone in Both kidney, Can it Remove through Urination? And How? What Care I take? Please Answer only...
Dear Lybrate User, A kidney stone is mainly formed due to the accumulation of the minerals present in urine. Such accumulation occurs mainly due to low intake of fluids. Continuous low fluid intake results in the deposits of the minerals over the stone & eventually leads to an increase in the size of the stone. Formation of stone leads to pain along the kidney region. If the size of the kidney stone is below 3mm then it is possible to get rid of it without any surgery. Take Homoeopathic Mother Tincture BERBERIS VULGARIS Q, 30 drops, thrice daily, after meals, in a cup of water for 15 days. The stone will be expelled through urine in between the span of 15 days of medication. But if the size of the stone is more than 3mm then you should surely go for surgery.

Dear Your mother has fissure which is due to constipation and passage of hard faeces, Suggest: 1.Give emollient laxative like Duohaklax or cremaffin plus at night. 2.Give naturolax granules one sachet with a glass full of water at night or Isabgol powder 3-4 tsf in glass full of water at night. 3.Apple Zinc ointment inside and twice a day. This is a castor oil based ointment like a nappy rash cream. 4. Increase fluid intake 5.Five high fibre diet in form of green leafy vegetable, fruits like papaya, banana , mango etc. 6.If she can do some exercise in the bed 7. If she is still constipated then use suppository for toilet 8 If that doesn't work then use enema which are available in market regularly. Dr. Kiran Mehta.

It is suggestive of declining renal function. I recommend the following 1. Find out how much of protein you are losing in the urine. Protein in urine rises the creatinine. Tablets like ace/arb can reduce protein in urine 2. Avoid red meat 3. Avoid weight lifting exercises 4. Tab nephrosave twice daily has given good results in my patients 5. Most importantly make sure bp is within 130/70 at all times.

What is the reason for yellow urine. I do drink more water. And my age is 23. I even do walk and exercise for 1 hour.
around 5-6 litres of water should be consumed per day to keep your urinary system healthy..in summer times that volume might need increment depending on need.. since you exercise, you experience more sweating which increases the need of fluid intake..try drinking atleast 1litre of more water than you drink usually and see whether the problem persists.

I have ADPKD. Is following beneficial 1. Eating one white grapefruit each day 2, Taking Pavlostatin 3. taking Tovlapton orally

M.B;B.S, P.G.(FAMILY MEDICINE), D.O.H.
General Physician, Hyderabad
Dear, I don't think it will give cure. First understand what is ADPKD. Autosomal Dominant Polycystic Kidney Disease (ADPKD) is the most common, life-threatening single-gene disease. It affects over 500,000 individuals in the United States and 12 million worldwide. This disease is the fourth leading cause of kidney failure in the US. ADPKD does not discriminate based on gender, race, ethnicity or geography. People with a family history of ADPKD and younger people who develop high blood pressure may be diagnosed with ADPKD. In ADPKD, kidneys enlarge with age because they contain many cysts, or fluid-filled sacs. Over years, these cysts grow in size and in number and lead to kidney failure in about half of ADPKD patients. Medical evaluation consists of blood and urine tests, ultrasound or kidney MRI, and sometimes genetic testing.
