Retinitis Pigmentosa: What You Should Know About It?

Diploma in Ophthalmology, MBBS
Ophthalmologist, Hyderabad
Retinitis Pigmentosa: What You Should Know About It?

Are you losing your sight day by day? Does it make difficult to see you at night? Is this the onset of Blindness? Get to know about Retinitis Pigmentosa with these tips.

What actually is Retinitis Pigmentosa?
Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP) refers to a group of diseases, which causes a slow, but progressive vision loss. It is a genetic disorder that affects the ability to respond to light. This inherited disease causes a slow loss of vision, beginning with decreased night vision and loss of peripheral (side) vision and eventually results in blindness.

Causes: Retinitis pigmentosa is often hereditary (runs in families). If you or your partner has retinitis pigmentosa, there may be up to a 50 percent chance that you will pass it on to your children. Ask an ophthalmologist about genetic counseling if you are planning to have children.

Symptoms

  1. Slow loss of vision
  2. Beginning of decreased night vision
  3. Loss of peripheral vision
  4. Difficulty in identifying colours

Diagnosis: If you have poor night vision or a loss of side vision or if there is a history of retinitis pigmentosa in your family, your ophthalmologist will conduct a comprehensive eye exam to determine if you have retinitis pigmentosa. Your ophthalmologist will dilate your eyes to look at the back of them for signs of disease.

Treatment: Currently there is no known cure for retinitis pigmentosa. However, research has shown that vitamin A palmitate may slow the progression of certain forms of RP. Your ophthalmologist can advise you about the risks and benefits of vitamin A palmitate and how much you can safely take. Taking too much vitamin A palmitate can be toxic, and evidence of vitamin A palmitate effect on RP progression is not substantial.
Another recommendation for slowing vision loss from RP is to wear sunglasses to protect your retina from harmful ultraviolet (UV) light.

Retinal prosthesis is also an important area of exploration because the prosthesis, a man-made device intended to replace a damaged body part, can be designed to take over the function of the lost photoreceptors by electrically stimulating the remaining healthy cells of the retina.

7 Things To Avoid When You're Suffering From Cough

M.Sc. in Dietetics and Food Service Management , Post Graduate Diploma In Computer Application, P.G.Diploma in Clinical Nutrition & Dietetics , B.Sc.Clinical Nutrition & Dietetics

7 Things To Avoid When You're Suffering From Cough

1. Avoid eating cold foods: According to Dr. Pradip shah, consultant physician, fortis hospital, mulund, a common cold and cough triggered by cold food items like ice-cream and cold drinks is a common complain of people visiting local health clinics. Although there is no scientific evidence as to how cold food items trigger and worsen coughs, patients are normally advised to avoid them altogether until they recover completely. One sensible explanation for this would be that cold beverages and foods cause a drying out of the respiratory lining making it susceptible to infections and triggering coughing due to irritation.

2. Avoid overeating at night: Having a heavy dinner at night or overeating can be a cough trigger for people suffering from gastroesophageal reflux disease (gerd). People with gerd may have poor coordination between contraction and relaxation of the sphincter muscle that prevents reflux of food to the esophagus. As a result, the stomach acid can flow back to the food pipe, causing irritation of the lining to trigger cough. So, it’s better to have an early dinner and maintain a gap of at least 2 hours between dinner and sleeping time.

3. Avoid sleeping flat on the back: Sleeping posture plays an important role in triggering coughing at night, especially if you have a productive cough. All the mucus and phlegm that gets collected throughout the day, flows up to irritate the throat when you lie down on your back. Instead, sleeping in an inclined posture, or sleeping on the sides will keep the phlegm settled and avoid bouts of coughing at night.

4. Avoid eating fried foods: Fried foods are oily in nature and oil is a well-known cough trigger. Deep-frying foods in hot oil generates a compound called acrolein, which acts as an allergen that aggravates coughing and causes throat itching. So, it’s best to avoid oily, fried foods while you have a cough.

5. Avoid smoking: Smoking is one of the causes of a cough due to bronchitis. Not only does it irritate the throat lining, but it also delays recovery and increases your risk of cancer. If you don't smoke, remember second-hand smoke is equally dangerous.

6. Avoid caffeinated beverages: Caffeine should be avoided by those who cough due to acidity and gerd. While it may provide temporary relief from a coughing bout, it actually causes the esophageal sphincter to become loose, allowing more acid to get flushed into the esophagus.

7. Avoid over-exertion: Nobody takes an off from work because of a cough, but that doesn’t mean you should exert yourself by overworking. Coughing is an indication that something is wrong with your body, so make it a point to get adequate rest to give your immune system enough time to recover.

I am a semi professional football player , and I am used to a hectic schedule of intense training n workouts. Then hitting gym later on! Meanwhile I Also attend my classes and ride a lot which indirectly patches me to an unhealthy diet! Like if I eat healthy breakfast, I tend to skip lunch and eve snack n later on gore on dinner with whatever available. Can't help it my schedule is so tight, mostly I had to skip meals. Which I am not comfortable with! So I don't know because of this or something else, I feel restless and weak every time, like I feel sleepy at anytime. And a major problem is my body is very hot from inside, at least that's what the doctor said. Like if I play, I can feel the heat exiting from my body and if It exceeds , it. Mostly ends with nose bleeding. Someone said that masturbation helps to release the body heat, so I tend to practice that twice or thrice daily. Still ain't helping, I got struck with the acne n pimples on my forehead because of this heat, what should I do now, please help!

With this kind of hectic schedule you need to take'vrushya' herbs and'vrushya' diet. If you are not regular in meals, you have to plan alternatively with intake of shukra dhatu vardhak' dry fruits, milk, other things that you can take anytime. Masturbation to release heat is foolish idea. Shukra dhatu is'saumya' loss will further increase heat. All shukra dhatu enhancers will be saumya to balance heat. Pimples etc can be done away simply. Wash face, apply aloe vera from plant direct if possible. Keep for night. Wash again. If effect not visible soon, some herbal powder capsules/ tabs will help orally/ locally. Pl consult for further advise.

Masturbation bad effects 1.       Masturbation makes you weak, it drains protein and calcium content in the body 2.       Masturbation creates nervousness and neurological problems 3.       Masturbation is one of the main cause for erectile dysfunction. 4.       Masturbation addicts you even if you taste it for one time. Controlling it is a very big menace. 5.       Masturbation creates drowsiness; you will be sleeping most of the time after ejaculation of your sperm. You will experience a damn tired. 6.       Masturbation causes stress and strain in your mind and soul. 7.       Masturbation also affects us psychologically; it creates depression after ejaculation and makes one feeling bad on his own. 8.       Getting red hot while masturbating will give a bad name in that environment and it is an indecent activity. 9.       Masturbation cannot be done simply, it needs to see, touch, indulge or, at last to think of a sexual practice/ sex organ of the opposite sex. This is more harmful that the image in your memory that you see could not be erased easily. This will lead you to a noxious problem that you cannot see any girl/ lady/ women without a single thought i.e. Sex. 10.   Masturbation creates an urge to do indefinitely; it doesn’t see the place, people and culture. It makes you digging worse sexual problems if chance knocks the door. 11.   Masturbation leads you to illegal contacts because the urge increases day by day and finally will lead to the search of a source for sexual pleasure. 12.   Masturbation is the main reason for speedy sperm release during sexual intercourse. It will create dissatisfaction to you and to your wife. 13.   Over masturbation reduces your sperm count. Couples who desire to get pregnant should not masturbate. 14.   SThe seminal fluid that gets released on masturbation contains proteins that are needed for many metabolic activities and cell formations. Proteins are the building blocks of our body; ejaculation often will create you to be lean and distracts your metabolism of muscle building. 15.   Ethically masturbation is wrong; you think of X/Y and do sex of your own. This hinders your values and respect for others. You may be are good in all other regards but will end up in a great problem if not concerned to stop this habit. 16.   Masturbation wastes your time and makes you useless. 17.   The pleasure of masturbation never lasts for a long time. 18.   Masturbation creates more problems as you lose your memory and thought-provoking ability. 19.   Masturbation is not the end of your desire; you may be fooled by your own practice. It will never give you a solution or a satisfaction but seems that it gives. 20.   It is not needed in any way to your sexual life that it has to be practiced without fail. 21.   Guys who masturbate will lose interest in sex with their wife very soon. They can’t feel pleasurable for a long time. 22.   Masturbation induces homosexuals in schools, colleges and hostels. Many times the latter creates sexually transmitted diseases like VD, syphilis, AIDS etc. Prevention of masturbation 1.Never touch the intimate parts of your body except during normal toilet processes. Avoid being alone as much as possible. Find good company and stay in this good company. 2.If you are associated with other persons having this same problem, you must break off their friendship. 3.When you bathe, do not admire yourself in a mirror. 4.When in bed, if that is where you have your problem for the most part, dress yourself for the night so securely that you cannot easily touch your vital parts, and so that it would be difficult and time consuming for you to remove those clothes. 5.If the temptation seems overpowering while you are in bed, get out of bed and go into the kitchen and fix yourself a snack, even if it is in the middle of the night, and even if you are not hungry, and despite your fears of gaining weight. 6.Never read pornographic material. 7.Put wholesome thoughts into your mind at all times. Read good books . 8.Pray. But when you pray, don't pray about this problem, for that will tend to keep it in your mind more than ever. Pray for faith, pray for understanding of the Scriptures, pray for the Missionaries, the General Authorities, your friends, your families, but keep the problem out of your mind by not mentioning it ever -- not in conversation with others, not in your prayers. Keep it out of your mind! A Homoeopathic constitutional treatment will give you permanent cure from this problem.
