Hi, please follow these tips to stop snoring: - reduce your weight if you are obese. - perform pranayama (breathing exercises) everyday. - quit smoking which irritates the mucosal layer of the nose and throat and causes blockage and results in snoring. - quit alcohol and sedatives which relax the throat muscles and results in snoring. - sleep on sides instead on back. - elevate the head by using a thick pillow which eases the breathing. - clear the nose before going to bed. - establish regular sleep pattern. - keep the bedroom air moist by using humidifier; as dry air irritates the mucosal membrane in thenose and throat. - perform throat exercises like repeating the vowels a, e, i, o, you loudly for 2-3 mins few times a day or keeping the tongue behind the teeth and moving it backwards - 3-4 times a day. - anti snoring appliances can also be used. Apply rumalaya liniment on the chest and the back 3 times a day and give hot water fomentation.

Cholesterol level should be measured at least once every five years in everyone over age 20. The screening test that is usually performed is a blood test called a lipid profile. Experts recommend that men ages 35 and older and women ages 45 and older be more frequently screened for lipid disorders. The lipoprotein profile includes: Total cholesetrol LDL (low-density lipoprotein CHOLESETROL also called "bad"CHOLESTETROL HDL (high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, also called "good" cholesterol) TRIGLYCERIDES (fats carried in the BLOOD from the food we eat. Excess calories, alcohol, or sugar in the body are converted into TRIGLYCERIDES and stored in fat cells throughout the body. High triglycerides and cholesterol can cause atherosclerotic heart disease or narrowed coronary arteries in the heart can cause the symptoms of angina, when theheart muscle is not provided with enough oxygen to function. Decreased blood supply to the brain may be due to narrowed small arteries in the brain or because the larger carotidarteries in the neck may become blocked. This can result in a transient ischmic attack or stroke. Peripheral artery disease describes gradual narrowing of the arteries that supply the legs. During exercise , if the legs do not get enough blood supply, they can develop pain , called claudication . Other arteries in the body may also be affected by plaque buildup causing them to narrow, including the mesenteric arteries to the intestine and the renal arteries to the kidney. Change life style .do meditation, yoga, Go walk daily, do any one physically activity daily i.e.play any game., Avoid fast foods, oily foods, junk foods, alcohol, smoking, fatty foods, non-veg.,avoid stress, take plenty of water in day time. And 1 glass of water before bed at night. use flax oil, omega-3 fatty meal or cap., take .green veg., whole grain. GARLIC,. Cod liver oil. Take anti cholesterol medicines . Cap. Ecosprin gold-10 at night daily. caciral sachet once a week up to 6 weeks.

Dear Blood cholesterol levels are not affected by food. Cholesterol is made in liver as per body needs. Recent studies show that cholesterol is not related to heart attack. Stress is major reason for high cholesterol and IBS. Please take medicines as suggested. Every effect has some side effect in long run. Stress needs to be controlled. Meditations will help. A dietcregimn will help. Attend stress management courses. Energy medicine like pranic healing will help a lot. Allopathy has limited resources to handle this. Be happy and have a reasonable disciplined life style. Best luck Vm.

What is triglycerides and how we can lower it ?

MD - Medicine, MBBS
Cardiologist,
Triglycerides are a type of fat in your blood. Although harmful for the heart but not as harmful as total cholesterol or ldl cholesterol. They can be reduced by weight reduction, regular exercise and avoiding fat intake. In case they are still high then medicines are available to control triglycerides.

A friend of mine was healthy and problem free. He had an argument with someone very close to his heart and he is possessive about. My friend is very sensitive about that person and the person means a lot to him. Now after the argument my friend started sweating, had vomiting and passed 2-3 stools. I am really worried about him since distance does not permit me to go and see him. Is it some sign of cardiac arrest or something?

As details of age and medical background are not available, it is difficult to make an assumption. However to be on the safer side, get an ECG done. It will reduce your fears once it turns out to be normal. It is likely that the sweating, vomiting and passing of stools was an acute reaction to the stressful situation. Look for any other signs of infection (fever, loose motions, abdominal pain, etc) and consult a physician if required. If all of the above is normal, consider approaching a psychiatrist or counselor who will be able to help your friend cope with such situations.

As it means that your son has 2 leaflets in his valves as compared to normal 3 leaflets. As of now it is causing mild restriction in the valve but it is not severe. In such cases you need to keep reviewing the echo every 6 months and if the severity increases your son will require a valve replacement surgery. Consult a paediatric cardiologist for your follow ups.

Avoid excess salt in diet take 8-10 glass water daily avoid fried and spicy food and coffee take a nutritious diet and a early morning walk start doing kapal bhati pranayam daily for 15 minutes. To start with do for 3-5 minutes nd slowly increase upto 15 minutes. The procedure for doing this asana is o sit in a comfortable crossed leg posture, sukasana (using padmasana or vajrasanais the best) and keep your back straight. Rest your hands on the knees using gyana mudra or chin mudra. O inhale deeply trough your nose, this will expand you abdomen. O exhale using a great force so that your abdominal muscles contract to the maximum o these exhalations are similar to your breath outs, but they should be forceful o make sure while exhaling, the air should be pushed out of your lungs by contracting the diaphragm o after exhalation again do inhalation, but this time with out any effort. To do this just relax your lungs, they will automatically expand and fill with air o one cycle of kapalabhati pranayama include one deep inhalation, then forceful exhalation and an effortless inhalation. O a learner can practice up to three rounds, each with 15 exhalations. Small breaks between each round are allowed.
