Common Skin Problems in Newborns

Toxic Erythema

Although the name sounds scary, this is a self-limiting problem requiring no long term medical attention. This usually appears as red blotches with a central white spot. It can occur anywhere and often involves the entire body.

The most important factor to keep in mind is the baby?s general health. If the baby has no fever, stays alert and active, responds to the mother, feeds normally, and wets and soils the nappy as usual, then there is no need to be alarmed. However, if the baby stops feeding, stops crying or looks groggy all the time, then he or she needs to be assessed by a child specialist.

I have already replied ur same query in which age of baby wasn't mentioned. Since baby is 1.5 years old and must be taking all nutritious diet, it may have not much impact on baby development. But it is advisable to consult doctor for ur own benefits.

When Your Toddler Is A Late Walker

MBBS, MD - Paediatrics
Pediatrician, Varanasi
When Your Toddler Is A Late Walker

Some babies learn to walk by the age of nine to ten months, and others may take longer, much longer to start walking properly. By the age of 15 months, people may start asking you if your little munchkin is able to walk yet. These constant questions can eventually irk you off, and keep you wondering if truly your baby is facing any sort of disability or not. In most cases, you will probably find your baby was too lazy to start walking all along, and he has mastered the art of “toddling” a couple of months later. Other times, when your baby has not started walking in over 17 months, you may want to give your paediatrician a visit.

When should you not worry?

If your baby is an active child and is playing around normally, you may not worry about him or her too much. If you find your child able to move around crawling or rapidly kicking his legs around, then your child is probably a late bloomer when it comes to walking. Other factors that will indicate that your baby is not going through any developmental issues are when he or she is able to communicate with sounds or broken speech. Other thing that you must keep in your mind is the relative age of your baby if it is born premature. If your toddler was born two months prematurely, then you must consider his developmental age by adding two months to his actual birth. Also notice if your child is able to move positions on his own, like if he is able to change positions when he is sitting down or lying down. As such, inability to walk is not really a solid indicative of a developmental disorder.

When is it of concern?

When you go to your paediatrician with your child regarding his inability to walk, your doctor will firstly take a note of the general movement of your baby. Thus the “quality” of movement is what matters the most. If your baby is showing signs of rigidity or flaccidity in his limbs, it may concern your doctor, as it is the primary symptom of cerebral palsy. Nothing can be concluded unless your get proper reports of scans like MRIs which your doctor will recommend you to get.

If your child is not walking, avoid carrying him around too much to allow him to make movements on his own. Who knows, you may find yourself chasing him around all over in no time!

Hello, Simplest way of generating more breast milk is physical contact with baby as much as possible & also encouraging your baby to latch on to & suck nipples as much as possible (even if there is NO breast milk). Another trick is gently massaging your breasts & expressing milk droplets by gently squeezing breasts. Milk production in women is dependent on hormone oxytocin (or hormone of mothers love) & Oxytocin secretion (which in turn will help breast milk production) is dependent upon cuddling, fondling, physically touching your baby & baby sucking nipples (which activates milk secreation reflex acrc in your body) All the Best.

Febrile seizures-A nightmare

MBBS
General Physician, Hyderabad
Febrile seizures-A nightmare
FACTS:
1.Most febrile seizures occur in the first few hours of a fever, during the initial rise in body temperature. It occurs usually in children in age groups 3mths -5-6yrs.
2.Most febrile seizures last only a few minutes and are accompanied by a fever above 101°F (38.3°C). Although they can be frightening for parents, brief febrile seizures (less than 15 minutes) do not cause any long-term health problems.
3.Having a febrile seizure does not mean a child has epilepsy.
4Children at highest risk for recurrence are those who have:

their first febrile seizure at a young age (younger than 18 months)
a family history of febrile seizures
a febrile seizure as the first sign of an illness
a relatively low temperature increases with their first febrile seizure

What should be done in case of febrile seizure:

>Note the start time of the seizure. If the seizure lasts longer than 5 minutes, call an ambulance.
> The child should be taken immediately to the nearest medical facility for diagnosis and treatment.
>Call an ambulance if the seizure is less than 5 minutes but the child does not seem to be recovering quickly.
>Gradually place the child on a protected surface such as the floor or ground to prevent accidental injury. Do not restrain or hold a child during a convulsion.
>Position the child on his or her side or stomach to prevent choking. When possible, gently remove any objects from the child’s mouth. Nothing should ever be placed in the child's mouth during a convulsion. These objects can obstruct the child's airway and make breathing difficult.
>Seek immediate medical attention if this is the child’s first febrile seizure and take the child to the doctor once the seizure has ended to check for the cause of the fever. This is especially urgent if the child shows sym.ptoms of stiff neck, extreme lethargy, or abundant vomiting, which may be signs of meningitis, an infection over the brain surface.

No do not do this. The production of milk is dependent on suckling reflex. Milk production will stop on its own minus medicines if no body is fed. If you wish, you can donate milk to milk banks to be used by other mothers who are unable to feed.

General Physician,
I have a 4 weeks baby boy. He des breastfeed. My breast milk is not sufficient. Can I give him lactogen1?
It is very important for mothers to know that infants need nothing more than breast milk in the first 6 months of life. Anything new must be introduced only after 6 months, and in a gradual manner along with breastmilk. As for milk, after six months, mothers can start using infant formula milk as, it is the safest alternative to breast milk and it also contains more nutrients than in cow’s milk. Animal milk must be introduced to infants only after 12-18 months of age because, unlike mother’s milk, it lacks adequate nutrients, contains no antibodies that protect against infections, it is also a poor source of iron and can be harmful to the baby’s developing kidneys. As for choosing between cow’s milk and buffalo milk, cow’s milk is a better option to start with, as buffalo milk is rich in fat and difficult to digest. Indigestion can lead to diarrhea. While introducing milk, start by adding a few teaspoons of the pasteurized milk to soups, halwa and some room-temperature curd. If he/she tolerates this well, then over time the quantity can be increased with careful monitoring. When introducing buffalo milk, mothers must first boil the milk, let it cool and then remove the layer of cream before feeding the baby.

My 14months daughter was born with low birth weight (1.75kgs). She doubled her birth weight by 5 months, but since then her weight has not increased much. Started solids after six months. Before that she was exclusively breastfed. She has got a mild pulmonary valvular stenosis but docs told it has got nothing to do with her weight gain. She is only 4kgs now. Twice during winter she has to be hospitalised with respiratory distress with upper respiratory tract infection (viral). Since than she was on nebulizer for 5 months. Done many blood tests there to find out the reason behind her poor growth as well but all test gave normal report. Only she has very high eosinophil level and high WBC count. Mentally she is alert and very active. Kindly advise what to do to improve her condition of FTT. Right now I am giving her high calorie foods like banana, sweet potato, egg yolks daily. She does not like milk at all. So I am making porridges n pudding with it and feeding her. Also she is suffering from chronic constipation since she started solids. From past two months she has to be given milk of magnesia twice daily.

My daughter is 8 years old. She has suffering cough problem and disturb to take air in morning 3 am. Dust, hot temp, cold, is problem. A minor sound is release from chest when she take air. More cough is deposited inside the chest. Not disease food properly. Discontinue stool.

MD - Paediatrics, MBBS

As per your description, she probably has bronchila asthma. Try to avoid exposure to dust/smoke etc. Do not use deo, perfume or anti mosquito spray or coil in the bedroom. Give her steam whenever she has cough. Ensure that you give her influenza vaccine, this is very beneficial in such cases. She also might require long term inhalers, for which you have to consult your paediatrician.

Please send the reports to me so as to understand all details. Hyperammonemia is a metabolic condition characterized by elevated levels of ammonia in the blood. Increased entry of ammonia to the brain is a primary cause of neurologic disorders, such as congenital deficiencies of urea cycle enzymes, hepatic encephalopathies, reye syndrome, several other metabolic disorders, and some toxic encephalopathies.
