All About Acute Respiratory Infections

MD - General Medicine, DTM & H
Internal Medicine Specialist, Motihari
All About Acute Respiratory Infections

Recent years have witnessed the severity of acute respiratory infections. The main cause is exposure to more of respiratory Infection causing microorganisms. Everyone is at a high risk of exposure. The infections can affect all age groups equally. Therefore, you must know all about acute respiratory infections.

Acute respiratory infections may interfere in normal breathing. The infection often starts as a viral infection in the nose, trachea (windpipe) or in the lungs. In cases of non treatment, the infection spreads to the entire respiratory system. The infections are transmissible.

Causes:
There are many respiratory infections of which causes are unknown. However, a few known viral causes are as follows:

  1. Adenoviruses: These viruses are known to have over 50 different types of viruses causing common cold, bronchitis as well as pneumonia.
  2. Rhinoviruses: These viruses cause common cold. Those individuals, be it young or old, who have a weak immune system can have an acute respiratory infection.
  3. Influenza virus: This is also known as Orthomyxovirus with six types of viruses, such as Type A, B and C, Isa Virus, Thogoto Virus and Coronavirus. Out of these, Type A is known to cause a severe disease.
  4. Enterovirus: This virus is associated with several human and mammalian diseases, including acute respiratory infection.
  5. Respiratory syncytial virus: This virus causes respiratory tract infections in the lower respiratory tract.

Bacterial causes are as follows:

  • Bacillus anthracis
  • Bordetella pertussis
  • Corynebacterium diphtheria
  • Pneumococcus: It is a cause of meningitis and Pneumonia.
  • Streptococcus pyogenes
  • Haemophilus influenzae

Symptoms:
Few of the prominent symptoms are as follows:

  1. Itchy, watery eyes - Soreness behind eyes and often conjunctivitis
  2. Nasal discharge and congestion
  3. Sneezing
  4. Having Sore throat
  5. Coughing
  6. Severe Headache
  7. Fever
  8. Malaise
  9. Fatigue
  10. Muscle pain
  11. Diagnosis

The first thing that the doctor tends to check is the breathing pattern of the patient, followed by a number of checks:

  1. Fluid and inflammation in the lungs
  2. Nose and throat checks
  3. X-ray or CT scan would be required to check the condition of the lungs in advanced cases

There could be complications such as respiratory failure, respiratory arrest or congestive heart failure

Treatment:
Ideally for viruses, there isn't any cure. Medications that are prescribed are for the symptoms.

  1. Cautious use of antibiotics for the symptoms can reduce adverse effects as well as decrease costs. It will also reduce drug resistance.
  2. A single oral dose of nasal decongestant used in common cold could be moderately effective to aid congestion in grown-ups for a short period.
  3. Alternate medications, such as the use of vitamin C help in the inhibition and cure of upper respiratory infections.

Prevention:

  1. Probiotics and vaccination are available for certain infections such as URTIs, Adenoviruses and Streptococcus pneumoniae.
  2. Best prevention is to boost your immune system.

My baby is 2 month old. She does sleep. She controls her sleep. She falls off to sleep when I am breastfeeding her. The minute I take nipple out of her mouth she wakes up. Is it ok to give her a pacifier to put her to sleep and let the pacifier be in her mouth till she wakes up?

Do not use a pacifier and it is normal for infants to fall asleep while feeding and it is a bit tiresome for mothers and is the pain of motherhood. You wake her up scratching foot or neck and continue to feed.

If I don't masturbate for 1 week my testicles will pain and I don't experience nightfall. What's wrong? 28: years male.

DHMS (Diploma in Homeopathic Medicine and Surgery)
Homeopath, Ludhiana
If I don't masturbate for 1 week my testicles will pain and I don't experience nightfall. What's wrong? 28: years male.
Your problem is termed as Blue Balls. It is the slang term for a congested prostate or vasocongestion, the condition of temporary fluid congestion in the testicles and prostate region caused by prolonged sexual arousal in the human male. It is often accompanied by a cramp-like ache of prostatic congestion and pain/tenderness or edema of the testes. The cause is the prolonged sexual stimulation of the erect penis (intentional or unintentional), that does not result in orgasm and ejaculation. In your case it is a erotic sexual denial. It will always happen when you are habitual to masturbation. So if you are trying to control this habit, start slowly and during that period dont watch porn or any other material related to sexual arousal as condition of Blue Balls will arise. It is normal and nothing to worry about ,what you have to do is slowly massage the testicles with some oil for 3-5 minutes whenever you feel pain or using a vibrator on the testicles during the prolonged sexual activity may prevent the blood from pooling and actually prevent or decrease the severity of blue balls. So from now onwards whenever you feel like prohibiting from masturbation you can take the help of below prescribed homoeopathic medicine which will prevent tenderness or odema of your Testes. Homoeopathic medicine CONIUM 30 ( Dr Reckeweg) Drink 2 drops direct on tongue 3 times daily.

Sometimes menses may get irregular due to hormonal changes, just wait for few days. And if you are still in doubt about pregnency test perform again by taking first few drops of morning urine sample after 5 days.

I have a dandruff problem from last 2 years. I tried different types of shampoos and hair oils but still no solution....
First of all, try to rinse your hair after every hair wash with mineral water that you drink! Only the last rinse, the water could be very hard wherever you live, so that affects the scalp a lot Secondly try to use ketoconazole salicylic acid combination shampoo along with tablet ketoconazole 200 mg daily once for 14 days and follow up! Do not consume alcohol during the period and do not take these medications if you have jaundice and take only for 14 days.

Burn Injuries - 5 Ways to Manage Its Pain

MD, FIPP
Pain Management Specialist, Kolkata
Burn Injuries - 5 Ways to Manage Its Pain

While injuries of any form can be painful, burn injuries are one of the worst to suffer from. While cuts and bruises can be temporarily assuaged with a proper dressing, burns are quite different in this regard. With burns, the damaged tissues will stay on the body and may cause continuous pain. Thus, burn injuries are difficult to treat and they require different strategies for pain management as well.

Treatment methods available for treating pain arising due to burn injuries

  1. Apply an anesthetic cream or aloevera gel to soothe the burnt skin. Avoid exposing the skin to air as that will cause painful sensations.
  2. Loose gauze or antibiotic ointment must be used to protect the influenced area.
  3. Soak the burnt area wound in cold water for about five minutes or more.
  4. If the burn escalates or affects a widespread area, seek medical attention immediately.

Pain management factors for burn injuries:

  1. Relaxation: During the phase of recovery, burn injuries put immense stress on your body and continue for a long period. Muscle tension is caused by stress that increases pain. Some relaxation techniques are proven to be beneficial to reduce the stress on body.
  2. Coping with your pain: Different people have different ways to cope with physical discomfort. Look out for situational aspects which are currently under your control and take it positively. The ‘what ifs’ or wishing that the burn didn’t occur in the first place will not help with your current situation. You should focus on things what you can control like self-rehabilitation, doing your daily exercises, physical therapy treatment or following a doctor’s suggestion of pain management strategies. This will help you cope with your pain to a greater extent.
  3. Sleep medications: If your normal sleep routine is hampered, consult your physician for safe sleep medications. Proper sleep is very important for the healing process and even more so in the case of burn related injuries.
  4. Antidepressants: Some people may not be suffering from depression, but they might still need antidepressants for relief and sound sleep. A health care provider might prescribe antidepressants as a way to deal with acute pain from burn injuries.
  5. Increase the pace of your activities: If you want to rebuild your health and stamina and get back in form soon, focus on the regular physical and mental activities. Exercise regularly, but don’t push yourself too much. Increase your physical activities gradually over time. Unless and until you are fully comfortable, don’t strain yourself too much. Occupational and physical therapists can help you with an appropriate activity program. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a doctor and ask a free question.

My face is oily which solution is used on this?

BHMS
Homeopath,
My face is oily which solution is used on this?
Hi. There are four main factors which causes acne: Oil production Dead skin cells Clogged pores Bacteria Factors that may worsen the acne: Androgen hormones, certain medications (drugs containing corticosteroids, androgens or lithium can worsen acne), dietary factors, including dairy products and carbohydrate-rich foods — such as bread, bagels and chips — may trigger acne and Stress can make acne worse. Management: Wash your face with Bakson's Facewash (wash your face with warm water only) and followed by CTMP, i.e., cleansing, toning, moisturising and protection (apply liberally Sunscreen Gel with SPF-30) after washing your face daily. Home-made remedies: - Take 1 tbsp of fuller's earth (multani mitti) + a dash of lime + bit of rosewater – apply this on your face till it gets dried up, then rinse it off. - Take 1 tsp of Alum (or fitkari), make it slightly wet with water and apply this on your wet face, spread it well; let it dry and rinse it off. Alum remove your excessive moisture or oil and it also tightens the skin's tonicity. Medication: You can take homoeopathic medicines – Berberis Aquefolium Q/ 10 drops in 1/2 cup of water/ thrice a day (and for local application as well) and Kali Brom. 200/ thrice a day – for 20 days. Use Bakson's Apricot scrub at least once a week.
