Brain Damage - Types, Causes and Symptoms

Regardless of whether the cause is a tumor, trauma, stroke or any other illness, any injury which inflicts damage on your brain cells is considered to be a brain damage. 

There are two types of brain damage, both of which interfere with the standard functioning of the brain. 
They are:

  1. Acquired brain injury (ABI): Either resulting from a tumor or a neurological illness, for instance a stroke, this type of brain injury originates from the cellular level and is commonly linked with brain pressure.
  2. Traumatic brain injury (TBI): It results from any damage imparted to the skull usually from an external and physical force like a blow to the head or a head accident, which in turn damages the brain.

How severe the brain damage is depends largely on the type of brain injury. Mild brain injuries are temporary, causing headaches, memory lapses, nausea and confusion. On the other hand, severe brain injuries cause cognitive, physical and behavioral impairments which are often life-changing and permanent.

Causes:
Acquired brain injuries may be caused by:

  1. Poisoning
  2. Being exposed to toxic substances
  3. Choking, strangulation or drowning
  4. Heart attacks
  5. Infections
  6. Stroke
  7. Tumors
  8. Neurological illnesses
  9. Aneurysms
  10. Illegal drug abuse

Traumatic brain injuries are usually caused by:

  1. Car accidents
  2. Sports injuries
  3. Physical violence
  4. Head blows
  5. Falls and other mishaps

Symptoms:
Whether acquired or traumatic, symptoms of brain damage can be classified under four major groups:

1.  Cognitive symptoms generally include

  • Having a hard time processing information or expressing thoughts
  • Difficulty in understanding others or abstract concepts
  • Indecisiveness
  • Memory loss
  • Short attention spans

2.  Physical symptoms generally include

3.  Perceptual symptoms generally include

  • Spatial disorientation
  • Smell and taste disorders
  • Heightened pain sensitivity
  • Changes in hearing, seeing, or touch sensations
  • Unable to perceive time
  • Balance problems

4.  Emotional or behavioral symptoms generally include

  • Decreased stress tolerance
  • Heightened or flattened reactions or emotions
  • Aggressiveness
  • Sluggishness
  • Impatience and irritability
  • Self-denial

Insomnia going through regular on my sleep and stress myself and I am not able to sleepy in nights and usually 10 pm to 1 am or 2.30 or sometimes 12. 30 am and some nights wake up this I could not continue my sleep any more.

Hi stop taking spicy food at night (too much Spice). Take food after 9 at night. No fried stuff. At 10 or 10,30 take a glass of milk and sleep. Any worries ,should sort out yourself.

Stretching exercises for the wrist without irritating median nerve, rest to wrist with splints if using a lot when typing, playing sports, ice pack, few times a day. Physiotherapy in form of ultrasound, soft tissue mobilizations, stretching and strengthening can help significantly. Good luck.

I have 2 problems. 1) I am suffering from migraine for about 2 years, daily morning head pains very badly sometime it remains for 7 days. 2) I have dhaat problem, this problem is from 18 years, I have tried many medicine but none has worked, even I am from Ayurveda field, daily night some white substance flows from my penis, please advice some really good medicine. This fluid coming out is semen .Semen, also known as seminal fluid, is an organic fluid that contains sperms. It is secreted by the sexual glands. Semen coming out at night is also called Night fall or Nocturnal emission or Wet dreams. Do not be tensed about this issue. It is normal at your age. It is not an illness but a natural phenomenon by which old sperms come out and make space for new sperms. New sperms are produced continuously in our body by pushing away the older ones. It does not cause any physical harm or weakness.

I have thyroid autoimmune disorders. I have chronic insomnia. Can I have to take sleeping pills. I am not able to sleep at night .if I start these pill I will have to take lifetime. There is any other treatment so I will not have to take sleeping pills.

It true that sleeping tablets are habit forming and one should avoid using then as far as possible. Keep yourself busy throughout the day. Avoid sleeping during day time. Do regular exercise. Take light food in dinner.
