lybrate-user, Thanks for the query. It appears that you are having diabetes. In that case it is absolutely essential to have a very strict blood glucose control both for having conception and through out the pregnancy. Please also get your Thyroid assay done (TSH value should be around 2 mU/L). If blood glucose is not well controlled (between 90 to 120 mg /100 ml) during pregnancy then outcomes can be unpredictable or bad. So please achieve a strict blood glucose control. Then go for the pregnancy. If you have any doubts please come back. Thanks.

Abortion pills have a high hormone content. I would not suggest it in this period. If you want to go for abortion, better would be consult your local doctor. Do not delay. It will only complicate matters.

I have unprotected sex with my gf and I used ipill at that time. Now I was in great fear of it. It already completed 3 days after using ipill but it did not bleed till now. Her actual date is on 19th. Can you please help me.

MBBS, MS - Obstetrics and Gynaecology, DNB (Obstetrics and Gynecology)
Gynaecologist, Bangalore
She won't start bleeding after taking the pill. As her date is on 19th, you have to wait till 19th for her to start bleeding. The possibility of pregnancy in the current scenario is very unlikely. So don't worry. If she doesn't bleed by 25th, further testing is advised.

Yes if there is no tubal block then she can become pregnant just that there would be high chances of preterm delivery, so her pregnancy has to be supervised by the obstetrician through out the pregnancy period. Regards

Sleepwalking - 11 Things You Must Know!

Sleepwalking - 11 Things You Must Know!

Sleep is one such time when people usually are expected to lie down still and get rest. However, we have all heard of sleepwalking, a condition where a person walks during the sleep. Though it may sound strange, there is a deeper explanation for it both from a causative point of view and from managing it.

Things you should know?

  1. Sleepwalking happens when a person moves back from a deep sleep to a light sleep or awakening state.
  2. The person who is sleepwalking is usually not aware of it.
  3. Activities may range from simply getting up and sitting up in bed to walking around the room. They could also open the door and walk out to the neighbourhood. Moving furniture, changing dresses or driving a car, may also be some of the actions Most of these activities happens completely without their knowledge.
  4. Mostly happens in children up to the age of 12, but can be seen in adults also, where it assumes a more severe form.
  5. The person who is sleepwalking has a fixed stare with glassy eyes. They may appear dazed and lost when they are awakened.
  6. They may not respond when they are actually sleepwalking, or respond very slowly
  7. They can be brought back to bed and put back to sleep without being disturbed. Most children would go back to sleeping when this is done
  8. Though the parents can be very worried when they see children sleepwalking, reassurance is required, as it usually disappears as they cross teenage.
  9. There could be chances of small injury like tripping or fall during the sleepwalking episode
  10. Sleepwalkers may be more restless compared to other children during their waking hours
  11. Bedwetting is also quite common in children who sleepwalk

Causes

  1. Inappropriate sleep pattern with lack of sleep for prolonged periods is one of the main reasons for sleepwalking
  2. Stress
  3. Excessive drinking
  4. Medical conditions like heart rhythm problems, acidity, gastric reflux, and seizures
  5. Psychiatric conditions like panic attacks and post-traumatic stress disorder can also lead to sleepwalking

Management

  1. For a parent to see their child walking around in their sleep can be quite disturbing.
  2. Reassurance is required stating that it is just a temporary phase and will not stay beyond the teenage years
  3. Most people do not require any intervention unless accompanied by severe symptoms like going out of the house or driving
  4. Once established, it is advisable to avoid by not drinking too much alcohol, avoiding stress and anxiety and taking precautions like extra-secure locks to prevent sleepwalking and/or other side effects. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a psychiatrist.

Vaginal Bleeding During Pregnancy - Is Miscarriage The Cause?

MBBS, MS - Obstetrics and Gynaecology
Gynaecologist, Agra
Vaginal Bleeding During Pregnancy - Is Miscarriage The Cause?

During the first 20 weeks of pregnancy, 20 to 30% of women have vaginal bleeding. In about half of these women, the pregnancy ends in a miscarriage. If miscarriage does not occur immediately, problems later in the pregnancy are more likely. For example, the baby's birth weight may be low, or the baby may be born early (preterm birth), be born dead (stillbirth), or die during or shortly after birth. If bleeding is profuse, blood pressure may become dangerously low, resulting in shock.

The amount of bleeding can range from spots of blood to a massive amount. Passing large amounts of blood is always a concern, but spotting or mild bleeding may also indicate a serious disorder.

Causes:

The most common cause is a miscarriage. There are different degrees of miscarriage (also called spontaneous abortion). A miscarriage may be possible or certain to occur (inevitable abortion). All of the contents of the uterus may be expelled or not (incomplete abortion). The contents of the uterus may be infected before, during, or after the miscarriage (septic abortion). The fetus may die in the uterus and remain there (missed abortion). Any type of miscarriage can cause vaginal bleeding during early pregnancy.

The most dangerous cause of vaginal bleeding is Rupture of an abnormally located (ectopic) pregnancy - one that is not in its usual place in the uterus. For example, one that is in a fallopian tube.

Another possibly dangerous but less common cause is rupture of a corpus luteum cyst. After an egg is released, the structure that released it (the corpus luteum) may fill with fluid or blood instead of breaking down and disappearing as it usually does. If an ectopic pregnancy or a corpus luteum cyst ruptures, bleeding may be profuse, leading to shock.

Warning signs:

In pregnant women with vaginal bleeding during early pregnancy, the following symptoms are cause for concern:

  1. Fainting, light-headedness, or a racing heart—symptoms that suggest very low blood pressure
  2. Loss of large amounts of blood or blood that contains tissue or large clots
  3. Severe abdominal pain that worsens when the woman moves or changes positions
  4. Fever, chills, and a vaginal discharge that contains pus mixed with the blood

When to see a doctor: Women with warning signs should see a doctor immediately. Women without warning signs should see a doctor within 48 to 72 hours. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a Gynaecologist.

My mother is 65 and she is suffering her left breast is from bleeding of puss and pain, can please suggest how to go ...
you should not wait ,if she has bleeding, and pain with pus from her left breast it could be either an inflammation due to which she is having all of the above, or it could be some other issue ,so ideally you should get a mammography done to ascertain the cause, along with routine and specialised blood tests to rule out any serious complications.

Trichomoniasis - How it Can Be Prevented?

Trichomoniasis is an infection that is caused by a parasite and is transmitted sexually. This disorder is characterized by symptoms of itching in the genitalia, smelly discharge from the vagina and pain while urinating. This disorder may also result in premature birth in case of pregnant women.

The symptoms of this disorder are:

1. Redness around the genitals, which may cause intense itching

2. You may experience pain during sexual intercourse and urination

3. A smelly colored vaginal discharge

4. You may experience discharge from the penis

5. A burning sensation during ejaculation and urination

6. A constant feeling of irritation in the penis

Causes behind it

The disorder is caused by a parasite known as Trichomonas vaginalis. Certain factors increase your chances of contracting this disorder; them being:

1. Engaging in unprotected sexual intercourse

2. If you have had an episode of Trichomoniasis

3. If you have been affected by STI/STDs before

4. Having multiple sex partners can certainly augment its chances

Prevention

There are certain preventive measures that you can adopt to prevent this infection.

  1. Avoid engaging in sexual activities once the condition is diagnosed.

  2. If you are, it is always advised to use latex condoms during intercourse to decrease your chances of contracting this disease.

  3. Avoid engaging in sexual intercourse with multiple sex partners. If this disorder is not treated, then it may increase your chances of getting affected by HIV as well.

  4. It also tends to cause an early rupture of the membranes in pregnant women; resulting in premature delivery.

If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a gynaecologist.
