This Festive season be Portion-Smart with Tips from Mitalee

Resolutions often spring from guilt about failure of willpower, when the focus can be on developing new portion awareness and habits that will work throughout the year. The goal isn’t to shun foods but to be mindful of the portions we’re eating while we’re eating them.

Mitalee Doshi’s PORTION-SMART STRATEGIES

- Take a healthy portion (on a small plate), sit down, and eat slowly, savoring every bite. The longer you take to eat a portion, the less likely it is that you will reach for seconds. It takes time for the body to begin signaling satiety.

- Eat fried or sweets in small portions may be 1 or 2 pieces.

- Whenever you indulge in fried foods or sweets cut down the consumption of carbohydrates like chapati or pasta or bread or rice and Have more Salads and soups.

- Have grilled , steamed, baked or roasted dishes instead of fried ones.

- Avoid eating too heavy and spicy food late night as it causes acidity & bloating.

-Have fibre rich foods
Have more salads , stir fried vegetables, pulses, fruits .Fibre takes care of stomach satiety and controls bingeing on unhealthy snacks.

- First order for soups & salads and then go to the main course .

- Opt for vinegar or olive oil salad dressing instead of ceaser or thousand island or mayonnaise dressing.

- Drinking plenty of water & green tea will help perk up your metabolism and ease digestion of high calories.

- Exercise more to help burn extra calories consumed.

Have a Smart & Healthy Welcome to 2016

Kitchen is a great pharmacy where spices are friends of a ‪dietitian and pride of the cooks.

We should ideally evaluate the extent of problems with your ovaries. On one side we need to do various blood tests to assess the level of your fertility hormones. On the other hand we need to do blood tests to evaluate presence of ovarian tumour. A mri should be done ideally as it delineates better, what exactly is the problem with the ovaries and also is able to define the tumour better. Nowadays there are many techniques for fertility preservation. We need to evaluate the situation fully to decide on the best course of action.

Mikacin can sometimes cause deafness but not in all cases. There is no test right now, by which we can predict the hearing problem. If you do not want to take chance, that's ok. But if you continue pregnancy, you must tell your paediatrician about it, so that he can arrange for the tests immediately to check baby's hearing condition.

I liked your query. Please note the following in respect to your queries: a.This is a myth which might have origination from earlier times when people used rivers or ponds as a source of common drinking water, bathing and for other house hold work. These sources were public places and bathing during periods would have caused embarrassment for women and uneasiness for others. This could be a possible reason for forbidding menstruating women/girl from take bath or head bath. In modern times where people have private bathroom, the belief of not bathing during periods in a total misconception and a myth generally propagated from the elder female members of the family. One should bathe everyday and it’s important to bathe during menstruation to maintain proper cleanliness and hygiene. There is no proven scientific or medical fact which support that head-bath should not be taken during menstruation. B.Also note that there are always reasons for what had been told in olden days. We may feel its better to take a bath even twice a day during periods. But the fact behind the olden words is, our body produces heat during that time to eliminate the wastes from the uterus, so when we reduce the temperature of the body by taking head bath may lead to stagnation of some of the matters in the uterus itself. This may lead to infection at course of time and even hormonal imbalance. Its better to clean the private parts to stay hygiene.

Signs You May Have a Hormonal Imbalance

Vaidya Visharad
Sexologist, Narnaul
Signs You May Have a Hormonal Imbalance
Signs You May Have a Hormonal Imbalance
he chemical messengers of your body, hormones, travel to each organ through your bloodstream and regulate vital processes, such as metabolism and reproduction.

The most commonly fluctuating hormones of your body are estrogen, progesterone and testosterone (sex hormones), thyroid (metabolism hormone), adrenaline (energy hormone), cortisol (stress hormone) and melatonin (sleep hormone).

Women experience greater hormonal changes than men. While both boys and girls go through puberty, women experience several additional defining stages throughout their lives – menstruation, pregnancy, postpartum, premenopause and, finally, menopause.

All these greatly change a woman’s body and cause her hormones to fluctuate. Being vital to key processes in the body, hormonal fluctuations significantly affect her overall mental and physical well-being.

Whenever we hear the phrase “hormonal imbalance”, our mind instantly procures an image of a flustered, hyperactive woman. This is a sad state of affairs as it reflects the negativity and insensitivity associated with this condition.

I am a 28 year old mother & having a 3 year old daughter. From past few days I have been experiencing pain in my breast area around the nipple. please tell me what should I do?

DGO, MBBS
Sexologist,
Breast pain is a common problem if it occurs before periods, because it happens due to hormonal changes, however if the pain stays all through the month or if you can feel some lump/swelling then you may need to do ultrasound examination of breasts. Wearing a well fitting bra may help.
