My 6 years old daughter had sustained burns on her both lower legs about 20 days back which are almost cured now. Can you suggest any medicine to get rid of her burn marks?

M.D. homoeopathy, BHMS

Apply cantharis mother tincture/ cantharis ointment on her burn area. But it is most effective when applied immediately after burn. As now scar tissue has already been formed it is difficult to treat it completely.

What is the difference between type 1 and type 2 diabetes? Which one is curable and which one is incurable?.

MBBS, Diploma in Diabetology, Certificate Course in Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (CCGDM), Post Graduate Course in Diabetology
Endocrinologist, Mumbai
What is the difference between type 1 and type 2 diabetes? Which one is curable and which one is incurable?.
Type 1 diabetes is the kind in which the body cannot produce insulin hormone at all and hence daily insulin injections are needed lifelong to control sugar. Missing injections can prove fatal. Type 2 diabetes is the more common form which is mainly due to unhealthy lifestyles in genetically prone people. Lifestyle changes are the mainstay of treatment in this form and the person can be controlled for quite a long duration with tablets. Insulin becomes necessary after the tablets do not work well, which is usually after many years of diagnosis. Neither form is curable, it can only be controlled with medicines.

All About Nosebleeds

MS - ENT, MBBS
ENT Specialist, Delhi
All About Nosebleeds

Nosebleed is a condition wherein blood vessels burst in the nasal lining. Nosebleeds are fairly common and it is rarely a serious condition.

  1. Anterior nosebleed: It is caused by the eruption of a blood vessel at the tip of the nose. Anterior nosebleeds are generally easy to control by yourself or by a doctor.
  2. Posterior nosebleed: It is a rare type of nosebleed. Posterior nosebleed mostly occurs in older people. It occurs when an artery bursts behind the nose, which causes the blood to flow down the throat. Posterior nosebleeds are, thus, dangerous, and they need immediate medical attention.

Causes:

  1. There are numerous causes of nosebleeds. The most common cause of nosebleeds is dry air. Dry climates dehydrate the nasal membranes (internal nasal tissues). This dryness leads to crusting which can cause irritation or itching.
  2. Also, if you pick or scratch your nose too much, it can start to bleed.
  3. Decongestants for allergies, sinus infection or cold and antihistamines can make the nasal membranes dry and cause nosebleeds as well.

Some other causes of nosebleeds include:

  1. Some sort of foreign object stuck in the nasal cavity
  2. Allergic reactions
  3. Repeated sneezing
  4. Nose injuries (For example, car accidents, a punch to the face, etc.)
  5. Chemical irritants
  6. Cold air
  7. Respiratory Infection
  8. Consuming high doses of aspirin-high dosage thins the blood down, thus triggering nosebleeds

There are other rarer causes as well, such as:

  1. High blood pressure
  2. Bleeding disorder
  3. Blood clotting problems
  4. Cancer

Treatment: A nosebleed can easily be treated at home. While in a sitting position, close your nostril by squeezing the soft part of your nose. Hold your nose for ten minutes, then lean slightly forward. Inhale and exhale slowly using your mouth.

Never lie down when you are trying to stop a nosebleed, as you will end up swallowing the blood which can upset your stomach. Remove your hand from your nose after 10 minutes and check if the bleeding has stopped. If it has not, repeat the steps all over again.

However, consult a doctor if the bleeding does not stop or if there is a foreign object stuck in your nose.

If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a doctor.

Hi, Do let me know your hba1c value? also you need to provide me your daily food intake details. There are many lifestyle and dietary guidelines that can be followed: take high fiber prescribed diet which includes soluble fibre like apple, isabgol etc. Get more physical activity by prescription from a registered dietitian eat a balanced diet which includes whole grains and excludes all refined products like maida as prescribed by a registered dietitian, if you're overweight, diabetes prevention may hinge on weight loss. Every pound you lose can improve your health, and you may be surprised by how much. Participants in one large study who lost a modest amount of weight around 7 percent of initial body weight and exercised regularly reduced the risk of developing diabetes by almost 60 percent.

Since you ejaculate during masturbation it appears to be due to stress / anxiety, so relax and do exercise and you will be fine. If you don't get better then to exclude other cause you need to do some blood tests. Stop smoking if you smoke. If you are taking any medicine or nutritional supplement on regular basis then it may be due to side effect of that. Treatment is available.

I spent the night with a sex worker. Will I get HIV?

I spent the night with a sex worker. Will I get HIV?
The question: Hi I am a 26-year-old male and I had sex with a prostitute yesterday. I’m worried that I might get HIV. I am worried about getting it in the following ways:

We had sex twice – first time I used two condoms and second time I used only one. Do you think I should have used two condoms the second time?
She had a cold – is there any possibility of getting HIV that way?
She used an old cloth to clean my penis; could that cause HIV? She performed oral sex on me – is there any possibility of getting HIV?

Please help me. I am very worried. When should I get checked for HIV?
Here we try to answer the concerns expressed in the question in parts:

If two condoms are better than one: In case of condoms the phrase ‘two is better than one’ doesn’t hold true. In fact it’s more dangerous to use two since there’s added friction which can result in them tearing. And yes it’s possible to get HIV (if the aforementioned sex worker has HIV) even while using a condom if there’s a hole which is too minuscule to be visible to the naked eye. Here is all you should know about how not to use a condom.

If common cold could initiate transmission of HIV: HIV can’t be transmitted from one person to another the way the common cold or other flu spread. You can’t get HIV from someone if they have a cough or cold. The only way you can get HIV is through interchange of body fluids which can happen through sexual intercourse, blood transfusion, sharing injections (common among intravenous drug users) or similar methods where the blood or other fluids are transferred

If using an old cloth spread HIV: It’s impossible to get HIV from a cloth, because the virus can’t survive outside the body, it needs a temperature of 37 degree Celsius. Even if the cloth had HIV positive blood it’s a highly unlikely source of transmission.

If oral sex can lead to HIV infection: Yes it’s possible to get HIV through oral sex though the chances of transmission are fairly low.

When to go for a test: To find out when to get tested you can check out this article on testing for HIV. And finally a word of advice, not only are you risking sexually transmitted diseases like HIV but you’re also exploiting someone who’s probably been forced into that lifestyle because of circumstances beyond her control. Doesn’t that make you feel any sort of remorse? And let’s not forget it’s against our country’s laws. So stop visiting prostitutes and get a life. Read to find out if it is possible that we put an end to HIV/AIDS together.

Dear Lybrate User, I should appreciate you for the fact you believe that diabetes can be controlled by lifestyle modifications. Yes that's true, though it's not irreversible. Good that you have concentrated on physical activity , do concentrate on your diet as well. Make flaxseed, drumstick leaves, curry leaves powder and sprinkle 30 gm daily on all the foods you consume throughout the day. Also sprinkle wheat bran and germ daily 30gm throughout on all foods you consume. Consume lot of leeks and lettuce smoothie which is high in fibre content. Also you can consume raw lady's finger water soaked overnight for your diabetes condition.

Im 18 years old. I do masturbation everyday. Im addicted to it. How can I stop it?

Im 18 years old. I do masturbation everyday. Im addicted to it. How can I stop it?
To Controlling Masturbation: Find another outlet for your time and energy. Fill your life with engaging activities. The excitement of doing something different can help replace the urge to masturbate, and you'll have a go-to distraction next time you're tempted. Try some of these options: Be creative. The process of turning sexual urges into creative output (called sublimation) is something on which monks and sages have relied upon for centuries. Start writing, learn to play a musical instrument, paint, draw, or do whatever else makes you feel like you're doing something productive. Play sports. It takes discipline and persistence to excel at a sport. Develop an interest like running or swimming, or a group sport like soccer, football, basketball, or tennis. Also, any form of exercise will help you relieve tension, feel happier, and to make you focus on your physicality in a positive way. Yoga is another form of exercise that can help you feel more relaxed and less likely to feel the sudden urge to masturbate. Eat a healthy diet. Fruits and vegetables have healthy effects on the body and provide nutrients necessary to increase your energy to make you more active throughout the day. Minimize consumption of aphrodisiac foods, such as oysters, salmon, chili peppers, coffee, avocados, banana, and chocolate. Find a new hobby, or cultivate a skill. Learning something that takes a while to master can refocus your brain on the delayed gratification of achieving goals instead of the instant gratification of masturbation. Try skills like cooking, woodshop, archery, baking, public speaking, or gardening. Volunteer your time. Devote your energy to helping teens who've been less fortunate than you, such as working at a shelter, tutoring low-income students, cleaning up blighted areas, or raising money for a good cause. You'll get an altruistic feeling from helping others, and you'll have less time to stray from your goals. Get enough sleep. Urges to masturbate can be exceedingly strong, so make sure you have enough energy to fight those urges. Try to get at least 8 hours of sleep. If you frequently forget to go to bed at a reasonable hour, set an alarm to remind you.
