Several things can be done to prevent cold: -Always wash your hands after coughing or sneezing into your hands, blowing your nose, after touching someone who is sick, or when using public restrooms or telephones. -Cover your mouth and nose when you sneeze or cough. -Get plenty of rest/sleep.Avoid people who have a cold or cold symptoms. -Drink plenty of fluids(veg/tomato soups, dal water/coconut water/herbal tea etc), and eat nutritious food(like sprouts/boiled eggs without yolk with milk). Hope he is taking anti tb treatment daily. There is no sputum production or blood in sputum (good, it is a close case, he cannot infect others) there is no chest pain. Only symptom is breathlessness & noisy breathing. Use honey with warm water. Torrex syrup is also helpful & does not interfere with other medicines for heart or for tb. Some people cannot tolerate- curd, oranges, lemons, acchhars, chutneys, sour foods like imli as it triggers cough. Avoid any of these if they cause cough. Every vegetable that does not cause distention is allowed as cough becomes worse due to heavy oily food, vegetables cooked by frying. Saute the vegetables & pressure cook to retain the taste. Every fruit is allowed. As he is a heart patient too, I am sure that his intake of fats is low. With anti tb medicines also being toxic to liver, it is advised to take low fat diet & avoid other toxic antibiotics given routinely for fever! give him a high protein diet like toned milk, protein supplements of his choice. Avoid medicines to lower cholesterol also as they can cause toxicity to liver.

Dear Lybrate User, this is a long time to be suffering. You could start doing warm salt water gargles in the morning and night. Certain tests would need to be done to find out whether this is an allergy or an infection. Please do consult a doctor as empirical medication might not help your condition.

Hello lybrate user. Coughing is a natural body reflex It keeps the lungs, throat and airway clear of foreign material But constant coughing causes discomfort and caused by infection like common cold. Rx Steam inhalation with halin drops or mint leaves. Dashamoola katutrayadi kwatha 10ml diluting with warm water twice a day before food. Sudarshan vati 2 twice a day after food. Avoid cold heavy fermented oily food stuffs. Avoid exposure to direct wind and sunlight.
