Hello Doctor, I am 24 years old. My tongue got white every day and difficult to clean it. What are the reasons for this and how it should be cured.

MDS - Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery
Dentist, Chennai
Oral thrush is a fungal infection which occurs due to dry mouth, uncontrolled diabetes and weak immune system with debilitating disease or patient on corticosteroids. You may need fluconazole & renal safety dosage of amphotericin b (iv drugs to be used only with the advice of oral & maxillofacial surgeons). Kindly consult an oral & maxillofacial surgeon in person for further suggestion. We need more investigations with clinical examination to decide upon treatment. You may need candid ointment until then. Rinse your mouth thoroughly with a mouth wash. Advance procedures can be done with laser.

My b 12 level is 220 and tongue blister/ wound problem still exist. How to improve b 12 level by food and tab.

MDS - Oral Medicine and Radiology, BDS
Dentist, Ahmedabad
Hi, your b 12 levels are slightly on the lower side of normal. This is common in strictly vegetarian people. You should not worry, increase the intake of fruits and green leafy vegetables. Meet your physician and start vitamin b12 tablets with his opinion. The blister / wound has nothing to do with vitamin b12 levels as tongue manifestations of vitamin deficiency are different. For tongue problem, visit an oral medicine specialist for its treatment. Regards.

Why People Avoid Dental Care Treatments?

Dental Health is important.

Although, most of us enjoy a healthy oral condition that's because we have been taught by parents and school teachers that we should keep our teeth clean. The School might have arranged dental health seminars and taught how to brush, what to do with your teeth, and how to keep them healthy.

That's how we are going to teach our generation. It's a process.

What Dentists Need to Do?

Dentists are experts in oral health care and management. Not only they treat the dental patients, but also make people aware how to avoid the dental issues. Dentist's responsibilities include:

Diagnosing the oral diseases and problems.

Spreading the awareness on oral health.

Providing the solutions for dental health issues.

Making and implementing the dental health plans for patients.

Make necessary assessment arrangements such as dental x-ray to start treatment.

Guiding the patients during and after the treatment.

Showing case studies of past experiences to aware patients and other people.

5 Reasons Why People Avoid Dental Treatment

Following are the reasons why people normally avoid their dental treatments in the first place:

1. They have busy Schedules

People have busy schedules. We all have jobs to do. That's one of the reasons most people delay or avoid their dental treatments because they think they don't have time after their job hours. Keeping that in mind, we shouldn't avoid our dental treatment.

2. They don't want lengthy Procedures

Admit it. Dental procedures are lengthy and time-consuming. It might take 3 to 4 months if you have a major oral disease or dental treatment. Haven't you heard from people that they have kept the braces on for next six months as per dentist's advice?

3. They Feel no Pain

If there is no pain, there is no problem. Some people think that way!

It's fair. You might be noticing the symptoms of a dental problem while having ice cream or drinking coffee. If you feel something is wrong with your teeth, you better consult with a dentist before something goes really bad and gets worse.

4. They don't want dental treatment pain

Pain is one of the treatment avoiding factors. Especially women and children don't want to have dental treatment pain. Delaying or avoiding the dental checkup or surgery due to the fear of pain isn't the right thing to do.

5. They don't consider it as Important

People who think it's not really important to get dental treatments should read the American Dental Association's views on Dental Care. Once they read that, they will find out that scientific studies have shown the association of dental issues with other diseases including diabetes and heart problems.

Dry Mouth and Eyes - Complications Associated With It!

Dry Mouth and Eyes - Complications Associated With It!

An immune system disorder distinguished by dry mouth and dry eyes is known as Sjogren’s Syndrome. It can also cause dryness in places that require moisture, such as throat, nose and skin. Sjogren’s syndrome is often linked to other diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and lupus (disease in which the immune system destroys its own tissues and causes inflammations). Sjogren’s syndrome normally affects people over the age of 40, and it mostly affects women.

Sjogren’s syndrome has mainly two symptoms, and they include:

  1. Dry eyes: You feel like there is sand in your eyes as it burns and itches
  2. Dry mouth: You have difficulty speaking or swallowing

Sometimes, you might experience other symptoms as well, such as:

  1. Joint pain, stiffness and swelling
  2. Inflamed salivary glands
  3. Dry skin or skin rashes
  4. Vaginal dryness
  5. Continuous dry coughs
  6. Sustained fatigue

The exact cause of Sjogren’s syndrome is not known, but research strongly suggests that the autoimmune disease could be caused by genetic factors; especially if the illness has been found in more than one member of the family. Also, families with members suffering from type I diabetes, lupus and autoimmune thyroid disease can cause one or more members of the family to develop Sjogren’s syndrome.

The complications of Sjogren’s syndrome include:

  1. Dental cavities: Saliva protects the teeth from harmful bacteria that cause cavities. Since your mouth is dry, you become more susceptible to develop cavities.
  2. Yeast infections: Oral thrush, an oral yeast infection, is likely to develop if you have Sjogren’s syndrome.
  3. Vision problems: Dry eyes can cause corneal ulcers, sensitivity and blurred vision.
  4. Problems in the lungs, liver or kidneys: Inflammations can lead to bronchitis or pneumonia in your lungs; may cause cirrhosis or hepatitis C in your liver; and may lead to kidney malfunctions.
  5. Lymphoma: Some people with Sjogren’s syndrome might develop lymphoma, or lymph node cancer.

Peripheral neuropathy: Another complication of this illness is peripheral neuropathy, which is a tingling, burning and numbness sensation felt in your feet and hands.

Sjogren’s syndrome is either treated with drugs, or with surgery. Doctors may prescribe drugs to increase the production of saliva and to treat inflammations. Alternatively, surgery is done to either seal the tear ducts or insert silicon or collagen plugs to close the ducts temporarily. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a doctor.

Tiny food particles that get stuck in the spaces between the teeth and gumline need to be cleaned before they transform into plaque. Proper flossing helps in removing these unwanted substances from the areas where the toothbrush cannot reach.

I have jaw pain, clicking jaw, jaw deviation to left side on opening mouth, tightness of jaw muscle, neck pain, upper back pain etc. Now I am heavily feeling difficulty in swallowing air from my lower part of neck. I am feeling very very uncomfortable and unhappy. Please help me.

My baby is 27 days old. My wife was having teeth pain at the time of pregnancy so due to that we had not taken any treatment. Now again after pregnancy she is having the same is there any medicine that will help her from teeth pain please suggest.

Dentist, Pimpri-Chinchwad
It is absolutely safe for your wife to go for a dental treatment even during and after pregnancy. Tooth is the only portion of the body which doesn't heal or repair on its own. So you need to c the dentist and get it corrected, so that she can eat food properly, since she is a nursing mother, her diet is also important for your child.
