Migraine Vs. Headache: Know the Difference

Migraine Vs. Headache: Know the Difference

Migraine vs. Headache: know the difference

How to differentiate between a migraine and headache?

When you feel pain or pressure in your head, it may become difficult for you to assess whether you are experiencing a common headache or a migraine. Let's understand how different they are from each other.

A typical headache usually affects both sides of your head and varies from a mild to moderate pain. It can last from 30 minutes to up to a period of one week.

Some specific areas which get affected by a headache are:

  •   Temples
  •   Forehead
  •   Back of your neck

Factors that trigger this headache type are a muscle strain, stress or anxiety.

A migraine, on the other hand, is also a type of a headache which results in an acute throbbing sensation in one part of your head. Usually, migraine headaches are highly painful. Migraine pain makes it difficult for a person to carry out his/her daily tasks. Symptoms or signs associated with migraine attacks are:

  •   Vomiting
  •   Nausea
  •   Sensitivity to sound or light
  •   Pain in the temples
  •   Temporary loss of vision
  •   Pain behind your ear or eye

What are the common causes of a migraine?

  •   Hormonal imbalances in women - fluctuations in oestrogen, especially during menopause or pregnancy seem to trigger a migraine
  •   Drinks like wine and extremely caffeinated beverages
  •   Foods such as salty foods, aged cheese as well as processed foods can trigger the migraine attack.
  •   Medications - vasodilators such as nitroglycerine and oral contraceptives can intensify migraine pain.

How to treat a headache?

Fortunately, you can get rid of stress-induced headaches through over-the-counter treatments, which include:

  •   Aspirin
  •   Acetaminophen
  •   Ibuprofen

How to treat a migraine?

If you experience migraine attacks less frequently, these medicines may give you quick relief:

  •   Triptans, such as rizatriptan (Maxalt) or almotriptan (Axert)
  •   Antinausea medicines, such as chlorpromazine (Thorazine), promethazine (Phenergan) or prochlorperazine (Compazine)
  •   Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as acetaminophen, naproxen sodium, aspirin or ibuprofen

Some preventive tips:

  •   Make changes in your diet such as avoid such foods, including caffeine and alcohol which are believed to trigger headaches.
  •   You can also try muscle relaxation exercises, yoga or meditation to ease the migraine attack.

Stress does not lead to causing brain tumour at all. It may precipitate episodes of headache in a patient of migraine. If you are already on medications for stress and not finding relief, you may end adjustment of doses or a change in ongoing medications. Consult your traveling psychiatrist for that. In case of any further queries or assistance you may contact me online.

I met with an accident in 2012 and in that accident the calcanious bone was fractured after operation one week later it got infected and gangarin developed in my feet so doctor removed the infected calcanious bone and all the infected tissues from my feet and after that they have done skin transplant in the feet by taking skin from the thigh to cover the open wound now it is completely covered and healed but my problem is there is no flesh in feet around the calcanious bone region only skin is there over the feet bone so I can't give any pressure on my right foot and cannot walk in bare foot, even don't have sensation in that area also. I walk now although I limp with the help of applying soft silicon gel in my sock and wearing shoe but always had a fear that my skin in lower feet will be damaged or get cut while walking and I won't be able to know as I dnt have sensation in that area as it happened 2-3 times earlier also and then the slight cut took weeks to heal also and by that time I couldn't wear anything on my feet so that it will dry up and heal. Now I want to know is there any permanent solution through any further surgery possible so that I will have sensation in my feet back and can walk without any fear.

Unfortunately it happened, but there is remedy. There are braces available that may transmit the weight directly from leg (below knee) to the boot. It will protect your heal and also provide you confidence to walk. Please consult you orthopedician.

I am suffering from migraine so I used to take crocin twice or thrice in a week since last 5-6 years. And now I am suffering from stomach pains as well as other problems. Whenever I eat something the pain starts, the doctor has prescribed me rabic dsr and florawell but no improvement is there. Also he has recommended me sibelium 10 mg for migraine but it is making me depressed and tired. Need help. What medicines should I take?

MD, MBBS
General Physician, Delhi
Might be because of painkillers. You have gastritis or a gastric ulcer. Continue rabic dsr once daily on empty stomach for 2 weeks. Avoid any over the counter pain killers. Crocin is safe. Start naprox 500mg twice daily for 3 to 4 days during migraine attack. Coffee works wonders in migraine but again can lead to gastritis.

My grand mother is suffering from Parkinson but the bigger problem is that she gets fainted when she walks or sits. Is there any thing by which she can walk properly or even sit properly. Her age is about 75 years. She has problem of even getting up from bed.

FRACP, DM - Neurology
Neurologist, Ludhiana
She probably has postural hypotension. Bp has to be checked in lying and standing position. If it drops by more than 20 mm then she will need medications. Alternatively she may be having multisystem atropy or drug induced bp fall on standing.
