My 5-year-old daughter has asthma. What is the effect of using an asthma preventer long-term? I heard that using it for years might cause bone shrinkage. Is it true? Are there any vitamins or supplements to help vision?

General Physician, Mumbai
If steroids are given orally for long periods of time than only it will cause bone shrinkage but if given through nebulisation than it won't have any side effects

Dark spots are primarily caused by zits, acne, blemishes and black heads. The percentage of dark spots can increase with increased exposure to the sun. So, apply sunscreen, every time you go out and follow the home remedies below in order to get relief from dark spots. Take a medium sized tomato and squeeze the juice from it, add one tablespoon of lemon juice to the tomato juice and stir the mixture well. Apply on the face and let it dry for 20 minutes. Rinse the face with warm water. Collect the pulp from Aloe Vera leaves and let it dry in the sun for 5 minutes and then add few drops of lemon juice to the dried pulp. Apply this mixture on the face and wash it off after 15 minutes. The results are quite good. take a pinch of turmeric powder and add some lemon juice to it. Mix both the ingredients well and dab the mixture on the black spots. This pack can work very effectively to reduce marks on the skin and the results will be visible on the skin within a week’s time if you use this treatment daily.

My father is operated by pass surgery last month. Which type of food we gave him.

Diploma in Obstetrics & Gynaecology, MBBS
General Physician, Delhi
One month after operation he can have a normal diet like you people eat at home-daal ,roti, subjee , chaawal . Avoid extra salt through sauces , pickles , paapads and other foods which require preservatives , do not sprinkle salt on salads , encourage him to eat more of seasonal vegetables and fruits compared to before surgery , few nuts for good fats , a spoon of desighee or pure butter but no oily transfats like biscuits , cakes ,namkeen , street food or fried food at home. Use musturd oil for cooking and soy oil for frying ( yes sometimes he can be treated to home made pakodas/ puris) He should have 5 meals instead of large 3 meals . Do keep him occupied with light activities for body and some brain teasers to be aware of world around him. Whatever was his schedule before surgery , try to make him get back after 3 months of surgery.

Hair fall may be attributed to different reasons like using artificial colors, hair styling, chemicals etc. It may be due to some internal weakness also. Please go for herbal neem shampoo. Use shikakai and amla as conditioner (soak amla and shikakai in water overnight and boil a little in morning). Apply it on hairs. Keep for half an hour and then wash. It will condition the hairs. Basics of weight loss ( weight loss tips )

Dietitian/Nutritionist, Chandigarh
Basics of weight loss ( weight loss tips )

E- eat right food

A - eat right amount of food

T- eat right food in right amount on right time

What is right food:

  • Always choose easy preparations: those food items cooked easily are healthier, contain more nutrition and easy to digest.
  • Avoid deep fried extra oily food: generally deep fried over cooked foods causes acidity and a gastric problem which lead to indigestion and, later on, weight gain due to the improper digestive system.
  • Add colors to your diet: use color full vegetables, and eat different color fruits, it will provide phytonutrients. Phytonutrients are natural compounds found in plant foods such as vegetables, fruit, whole grain products and legumes. These plant compounds have beneficial effects working with other essential nutrients to promote good health.

Divide your plate into four sections with dairy on the side to represent the five food groups:

  1. Fruits
  2. Vegetables
  3. Grains
  4. Protein
  5. Dairy

What is right amount of food? (it means your portion size):

One easy way to size up portions if you don't have any measurements is to use your hand as a guide:

  • A clenched fist is about a cup - and a cup is the amount experts recommend for a portion of pasta, rice, cereal, vegetables, and fruit.
  • A meat portion should be about as big as your palm.
  • Limit the amount of added fats (like butter, mayo, or salad dressing) to the size of the top of your thumb.

Right time:

Fix meal timings, and try to stick to those timings. Maintain a proper gap between meals to get it digest well.

Dear lybrate-user, it is difficult to pinpoint why you wd be having this pain. May be the doctor would advise you certain tests and painkillers also. One can safely start walks any time and exercises from 14 weeks onwards as by this time the body strength starts recovering and sleepiness also lessens.

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common disorder among women of your age. Don’t worry, a lot of females knowingly or unknowingly suffer from this but it can be controlled to a great extent by following some medications, few lifestyle changes ,good diet and exercise. The main cause of PCOS is hormonal imbalance that may or may not be hereditary. Excessive levels of androgens that are male hormones, but females also produce is small quantity, can lead to problem with ovulation in females. Confirm to me if you are experiencing these symptoms - missed or irregular periods, excessive facial and body hair growth, cyst on the ovaries, sudden weight gain, pelvic pain, acne or mood swings? If yes, then you are most likely suffering from hormonal imbalance which needs proper attention. Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome is curable with the Homeopathic mode of treatment. Homeopathic treatment for polycystic ovarian syndrome is very safe and free from any side effect. Which Homeopathic medicine is required to extract the disease from its roots varies from case to case. Both the physical and mental spheres of the patient are thoroughly investigated while prescribing the Homeopathic medicine. The complete cure of PCOS is a time-consuming process and it cannot be expected in a few days. Along with the treatment a regular exercises, a healthy diet, weight control is also equally necessary. A good treatment can be started after proper diagnosis with the help of blood tests, pelvic examination and an ultrasound. In my many years of practice, I have successfully treated many patients for the same. No Periods/Missed Period If a woman does not get her period for a while, it might be because she is pregnant. Or in some cases, it might be that she has a medical condition that affects her reproductive organs. The exact cause can be known only after thorough history & physical examination by a gynecologist, so visit one nearest to you today to prevent complications. Absent or irregular periods may be caused due to pregnancy, PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome), being too thin or having too little body fat, exercising too much, use of birth control pills etc. The most common tests that we do to find out the cause of no periods is urine pregnancy test, hormonal assay & ultrasound of the pelvis. Depending upon what is the cause for no periods, the treatment is decided You should opt Homoeopathic treatment for the permanent cure of the underlying cause of irregular periods. Possible treatment will include losing weight if you are overweight, medicines to help you get pregnant if you are having trouble getting pregnant on your own, reducing stress, easing up on exercise if you are exercising too much and other medicines to manage your hormones.

Being depressed can make you feel helpless. You're not. Along with therapy and sometimes medication, there's a lot you can do on your own to fight back. Changing your behavior -- your physical activity, lifestyle, and even your way of thinking -- are all natural depression treatments. These tips can help you feel better -- starting right now. 1. Get in a routine. If you’re depressed, you need a routine, as Depression can strip away the structure from your life. One day melts into the next. Setting a gentle daily schedule can help you get back on track. 2.Set goals. When you're depressed, you may feel like you can't accomplish anything. That makes you feel worse about yourself. To push back, set daily goals for yourself. "Start very small, "Make your goal something that you can succeed at, like doing the dishes every other day. As you start to feel better, you can add more challenging daily goals. 3. Exercise. It temporarily boosts feel-good chemicals called endorphins. It may also have long-term benefits for people with depression. Regular exercise seems to encourage the brain to rewire itself in positive ways, Just walking a few times a week can help. 4. Eat healthy. It's a good idea to watch what you eat. If depression tends to make you overeat, getting in control of your eating will help you feel better. Although nothing is definitive, there's evidence that foods with omega-3 fatty acids (such as salmon and tuna) and folic acid (such as spinach and avocado) could help ease depression. 5. Get enough sleep. Depression can make it hard to get enough shut-eye, and too little sleep can make depression worse. Start by making some changes to your lifestyle. Go to bed and get up at the same time every day. Try not to nap. Take all the distractions out of your bedroom -- no computer and no TV. In time, you may find your sleep improves. 6. Take on responsibilities. When you’re depressed, you may want to pull back from life and give up your responsibilities at home and at work. Don't. Staying involved and having daily responsibilities can help you maintain a lifestyle that can help counter depression. They ground you and give you a sense of accomplishment. If you're not up to full-time school or work, that’s fine. Think about part-time. If that seems like too much, consider volunteer work. 7. Challenge negative thoughts. In your fight against depression, a lot of the work is mental -- changing how you think. When you're depressed, you leap to the worst possible conclusions. The next time you're feeling terrible about yourself, use logic as a natural depression treatment. You might feel like no one likes you, but is there real evidence for that? You might feel like the most worthless person on the planet, but is that really likely? It takes practice, but in time you can beat back those negative thoughts before they get out of control. 8. Do something new. When you’re depressed, you’re in a rut. Push yourself to do something different. Go to a museum. Pick up a used book and read it on a park bench. Take a language class. When we challenge ourselves to do something different, there are chemical changes in the brain. Trying something new alters the levels of [the brain chemical] dopamine, which is associated with pleasure, enjoyment, and learning. 9. Try to have fun. If you’re depressed, make time for things you enjoy. What if nothing seems fun anymore? That's just a symptom of depression. You have to keep trying anyway. As strange as it might sound, you have to work at having fun. Plan things you used to enjoy, even if they feel like a chore. Keep going to the movies. Keep going out with friends for dinner. When you're depressed, you can lose the knack for enjoying life. You have to relearn how to do it. In time, fun things really will feel fun again. I have answered your query. If you need any further help please contact us. Warm Regards,
