While speaking English I m stammering and repeating the words, but when I talk with my friends I m taking better Like one situation, I m talking with my teacher well in English than suddenly I remember, I have stammering problem I don't want to start again stammering Then I start stammering, because the fear of stammering. What should I do to overcome this problem It's a actually disease, or my mind creativity And this is problem start since my child hood. When I taking with my teacher I start stammering even though in my native Language

Stammering is not a disease. It occurs due to lack of confidence and fear. Whenever you talk to someone forget that you have this problem and be fluent. Even while talking if you feel like stammering ignore it and continue talking. Whenever you are stuck in between just pause for a while or cough and later continue. By doing this no one can notice. Try this and let me know. The best thing is to practice talking in front of the mirror.

How to get rid of stage fear? I often feel tense to give speech in front of my colleagues and students. I don't get words to speak.

It's a very comman problem. You need to practice at home with your friends, and go ahead. Just do it once and the fear will disappear. It's not a speech problem.

Vocal Cord Lesions - Causes + Treatment

MS - ENT
Ear-Nose-Throat (ENT) Specialist, Gandhinagar
Vocal Cord Lesions - Causes + Treatment

When the vocal cords suffer from the accumulation of non-cancerous and abnormal growth, these are known as vocal cord lesions. These lesions usually cause a variety of voice and speech related problems. These are also known as singer’s nodules and nodes, which may be caused by pressure, stress and stretching of the vocal cords. Women between the age of 20 to 50 are more prone to this condition. Here is everything you need to know about the types, causes and treatment of these lesions.

Types: There are three kinds of vocal cord lesions, that is nodules, polyps and cysts. A vocal cord polyps may be caused on one side of the vocal cords and may also lead to many disturbances in one’s voice. Another type of vocal cord lesions includes a mass of tissue that may manifest in the sac or membranes around the vocal cord. This cyst can be on the surface of the vocal cord or in the ligaments of the vocal cord. This may require surgical removal as well as voice therapy thereafter. Nodules are the third type of lesion that may form in the vocal folds. These are basically calluses that may disappear once the pressure and overuse of the vocal cords diminish.

Causes: These lesions are usually benign or non-cancerous growths that may be caused due to a variety of reasons. Screaming and overuse of vocal cords are few of the most common reasons for the eruption of such lesions. The heavy use of one’s voice can cause quite a bit of trauma to the vocal cords and may lead to problems including lesions and disturbances in one’s voice. Conditions like reflux and allergic reactions may also cause vocal cord lesions as a side effect.

Symptoms: From hoarseness to pain, there are a number of symptoms caused by this condition. A low pitch and difficulty while speaking are also some of the common symptoms of this condition. Patients suffering from the growth of such lesions will also find themselves making an effort in order to speak normally and to be heard. Constant throat clearing may be required as well.

Treatment: Besides giving your voice a rest and gargling warm saline water with salt, one can also have the condition checked by the doctor so as to ascertain whether or not it is a serious lesion that may require surgical removal and voice therapy. The doctor will usually prescribe medicines in order to deal with any underlying conditions that may have caused the lesions, including allergic reactions, reflux, sinusitis and other such ailments. One will also have to  stop smoking so that there is less chemical pressure on the vocal cord. Finally, one will have to go through voice therapy for more serious lesions. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a doctor.

Consult speech therapist. He will help to develop some vocal exercises. At the same time it is better to consult psychologist. May be it may cause for personality problems. Do not use any medicine. Therapy it is always best. Psychological counselling it improves your method of good thought process. It helps to improve your life style management. It improves your concentration levels. It is better to practice yoga and meditation. Do not be alone. Better to share your inner feelings and problems with your close friends and family members. It is better to spend most of the time with friends. Study hour completed later give priority for friends. Do not waste your time. Feel always comfortable and be flexible. Think always in a positive manner. Better to imitate to some one talk like them. Practice is very important at this stage. Better to communicate with new people it reduces your inferiority complex. Feel good always it is best method to entire life situations. Ok all the best.

Have breath problem and low voice due to vagus nerve tumor surgery. What is the treatment options.

PDDM, MHA, MBBS
General Physician, Nashik
Breathe deeply and exhale on a hisssssssing sound. Repeat 10 times. Proper breathing is the foundation for a healthy voice AND control over nervous energy that can make the voice quiver. Say “Mm-mmm (as in yummy) Mmm-hmm (like yes) ” Repeat 5 times. This develops mask resonance, which creates a clean and vibrant sound by creating a clean approximation of the cords and a resonance that will sound great and project easily. Say “Mm-mmm. Mmm-hmm.” up and down your vocal range, from low to middle to high and back again, 10 times.

You need to learn the" relaxation response" in times of stress and anxiety. This can be learnt in a step wise process only and with practice you can excel. Start with doing relaxation exercises like yoga and meditation. Also try breathing exercises for 15-20 minutes daily. Once you learn how to relax you will have to learn when to relax too. If you still find things difficult you might need help with some counselling and medications.

With their consultation I went to speech therapist for two weeks of speech therapy. But I felt there is no changes in my voice. After speech therapy also my voice is like as before. Kindly prescribe me a speech therapist specialist. Pls sir because I faced lot of problem with this voice. Pls help me sir.

Master of Speech Language Pathology

Dear lybrate-user, yes for puberphonia you need to consult a speech pathologist. It is not prescribed by any one. Correcting puberphonia needs consistent practice of some techniques and frequent monitoring by speech therapist. St will help you attain a low pitch voice, maintain it, and also keep the health of your throat and vocal folds. I am not really sure what kind of exercises carried out. I would be able to help you in a better way if you could consult me privately where you can share the voice samples too. Thank you.

People also make fun of my voice when they cannot understand what I am speaking. Also my 2 upper front teeth are outwards and my voice is a bit Raucous. One of the main reasons for stammering is fear and anxiety. Reduce your speed of speech for now, thus the stammering would decrease and fluency of your speech would become better. When fluency of speech reaches normal, then you gradually increase speed of speech, thus the overall speech can become as original. Because stress and anxiety increases stammering , you should also do transcendental meditation. How meditation affects health? It has been scientifically proved that meditation not only helps the mind but also body because controlled mind and purification of consciousness leads to better lifestyle and improved habits of food, sleep etc which in turn leads to better overall health. Most diseases have their roots in uncontrolled mind and impure consciousness. So do transcendental meditation or Bhakti Yoga

I always have cough im my thyroid it make me difficult to talk. And make my voice hoarse. How to solve this problem.

BHMS
Homeopath, Raebareli
Gargling with warm salt water is an effective way to treat a sore throat. Salt can even help kill the bacteria or virus causing pharyngitis. 1. Mix three teaspoons of salt (preferably sea salt) in two cups of warm water. 2. Gargle with this solution. Do not swallow it. Spit the water out after gargling. 3. Do this several times daily for one to two days. Also take hepar sulph 30 - thrice daily for next 3 days.

You need to go for thyroid testing, as this is the main organ which deals in the small muscles of larynx, secondly this may be due to the dryness in the mouth as this can be improved by taking iron diet properly, and milk products.

I am aged 39Y. I'm unable to speak since 12/01/2016. I have contacted ENT specialist and undergone STOBORNOSCOPY on 19/01/2016 as suggested by the doctor. The doctor has written stobornoscopy report that PHONOTARY gap is positive. Please suggest, can I able to speak or Not?

PDDM, MHA, MBBS
General Physician, Nashik
A positive phonatory gap means the vocal folds fail to close during phonation. A phonatory gap may be seen in patients who have muscle tension dysphonia, vocal fold paresis or paralysis, loss of tissue, or vocal fold flaccidity. Treatment aims to rectify the cause.

Dear lybrate-user. Please don't worry about your voice now. You are just 14. When you attain the age of around 18, automatically your voice will change. If you worry too much, you may have anxiety disorder. Take care.

Sir I have recent stammering problem what can I do fr it to cure. What is its treatment?

MD - Psychiatry
Psychiatrist, Chennai
Stammering is typically recognised by a tense struggle to get words out. This makes it different from the normal non-fluency we all experience which includes hesitations and repetitions. Commonly it involves repeating or prolonging sounds or words, or getting stuck without any sound (silent blocking). Sometimes people put in extra sounds or words. Often people lose eye contact. Some people who stammer talk their way round difficult words so that you may not realise they stammer at all. This avoidance of words, and avoidance of speaking in some or many situations, is an important aspect of stammering. Stammering varies tremendously from person to person and is highly variable for the person who stammers who may be fluent one minute and struggling to speak the next. Get an mri brain and eeg with a neurologist evaluation.
