I am suffering from sinus allergies which precautions to take in up coming winter please give me good suggestions than sir.

Do you have pain on cheek bones on pressing it? hot fomentation is really helpful in sinus besides drink fluids, such as water or juice. This will help dilute mucous secretions and promote drainage. Avoid beverages that contain caffeine or alcohol, as they can be dehydrating. Drinking alcohol can also worsen the swelling of the lining of the sinuses and nose. Moisturize your sinus cavities. Drape a towel over your head as you breathe in the vapor from a bowl of medium-hot water. Keep the vapor directed toward your face. Or take a hot shower, breathing in the warm, moist air. This will help ease pain and help mucus drain. Apply warm compresses to your face. Place warm, damp towels around your nose, cheeks and eyes to ease facial pain. Rinse out your nasal passages. Use a specially designed squeeze bottle (sinus rinse, others), saline canister or neti pot to rinse your nasal passages. This home remedy, called nasal lavage, can help clear your sinuses. If you make your own rinse, use water that's contaminant-free distilled, sterile, previously boiled and cooled, or filtered using a filter with an absolute pore size of 1 micron or smaller to make up the irrigation solution. Also be sure to rinse the irrigation device after each use with contaminant-free water, and leave open to air-dry. Sleep with your head elevated. This will help your sinuses drain, reducing congestion. Being also a general physician and registered dietitian, I prescribe both evidence based herbal as well as allopathic medicines complementing with dietary guidelines and home remedies carefully personalized for each individual patient.

My 5-year-old daughter has asthma. What is the effect of using an asthma preventer long-term? I heard that using it for years might cause bone shrinkage. Is it true? Are there any vitamins or supplements to help vision?

Asthma is a disease of the lungs, not the bones. So the question is that is there any connection between Asthma and bones. The most important connection relates to the anti-inflammatory steroids (corticosteroids) used to treat asthma. Corticosteroids, if taken regularly or for many months of the year, can have major effects on the bones. This is especially true of steroids taken orally. In children, they can impair bone growth, leading to lesser height as an adult. In adults, steroids can decrease bone mass and predispose them to osteoporosis, a thinning of the bones. Osteoporosis can put you at risk for fractures, sometimes with minimal or no trauma. It can cause vertebrae in your back to collapse in on themselves (vertebral compression fractures), ribs to break with coughing or twisting, and hips to break when you fall. Because of the impact on bones and other side effects of oral corticosteroids, safer alternatives to treat asthma were developed. Inhaled corticosteroids are now available in many forms ( dry-powder inhalers, or a solution for nebulization). Inhaled steroids are far safer for your bones because they are given at a fraction of the dose of oral steroids, with only a small portion entering the bloodstream. However, if the dose of inhaled steroid is high enough and the duration of use long enough (several years), it is possible that inhaled steroids, like oral steroids, can still affect your bone health.

Is there any cure for allergic asthma or swelling of bronchi intermittently? If yes, then what type of cure? Please tell me.

DAA, DNB
Pulmonologist, Bangalore
Hi. I understand your concerns. Asthma is a common allergic condition which is not curable but can definately be controlled so that you can lead a symptom free life. You will need to undergo pulmonary function test which is needed for the diagnosis and treatment of asthma. You will benefit from a combination inhaler. Regular follow up and treatment of itha pulmonologist is advisable. Hope your questions were answered. Thanks.

I have a problem in breathing, what is the ayurvedic medicine for asthma disease.

Bachelor of Ayurveda, Medicine and Surgery (BAMS)
Ayurveda, Udupi
Dear Lybrate User, *Ayurvedic treatment for Bronchial Asthma is initially focused on improving the digestive system. Herbal medicines are administered to clear the blockage from the channels by eliminating toxins (ama) from the body. They will then liquefy the Kapha present in the channels, allowing proper movement of Vata and fostering proper and easy respiration. Additionally, immune-booster herbal combinations are given to the patient in order to provide both physical and psychological strength, as the patient becomes weak due to repeated attacks of Asthma. *Avoid smoking and exposure to dusty and cold air. *Drinking herbal teas or sipping lukewarm water with honey is helpful. *To avoid ama formation, have freshly prepared warm meals at regular intervals. *Eat less than the full capacity of the stomach. *Heavy foods like dairy products, fried foods, pickles, cold foods, rice, beans and legumes should be avoided.

CONTROL OF ASTHMA
*******************************
Most uncontrolled asthmatics think they are controlled

Two thirds of patients with uncontrolled asthma think that their disease is well under control. Asthmatics on proper medicines can not only live a normal life but also reduce their future complications.

Uncontrolled asthmatics invariably end up with complications related to right heart due to persistent lack of oxygenation in the blood.

Dr Eric van Ganse, of University of Lyon, France, in a study published in the Annals of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology, examined 1,048 subjects with inadequate asthma control. When asked how they would rate their asthma control over the past 14 days, over 69 percent considered themselves to be completely or well controlled. Failure to perceive inadequate asthma control was more likely to be found in patients between the ages of 41 and 50 years.

The reasons are:
Most asthmatics fail to perceive their level of disease control and with an uncontrolled state they often feel that their asthma is under control.
In severe asthma, low blood oxygen levels might impair a person’s ability to assess their own breathing difficulty.
The notion of asthma control seems poorly understood by asthmatic patients.
Mild to moderate asthma limits the activities of a person and over a period of time they take that as their normal limits.
