My husband is 47 years old. He takes alcohol in the interval of 30-120 days. Once he starts drinking alcohol means that continues for at least one week. During this period he becomes very aggressive and out of mind and behaves almost madly. When he don't drink alcohol he is a perfect gentleman but bit short tempered. Whether this behaviour is normal? Please suggest.

If your husband loses control over his behaviour and if he is aggressive after consuming alcohol, then that is a cause of concern. He needs de-addiction treatment. Please take him to a doctor when he is sober. The doctor will prescribe some medicines for him to stay away from alcohol and also to treat withdrawal symptoms if any. He needs medical and emotional support.

This is not a good sign for you. It means that the activities on daily basis which you are suppose to do are not as per your liking or you are not capable of doing them. The best thing you can do is accept what your situation is, feel confident that you can make it better, start looking for solutions to the problems and start acting on the solutions. The best we can do is effort. Hard-work always pays, it might seem to you at stages that everything is going out of control but relax, thinking negative will not help. If the point of concern is a female or disappointment in love then you are too young right now to get your self messed up in such situations. Do not let emotions dominate your brains. If the point of concern is education and career, then just do not keep on expecting and start hardworking, you will get returns later on the right time. 1. Exercise daily 2. Have almonds raisins, milk etc 3. Add fruits and salads in diet hope you a speedy recovery.

All About Polysexuality

All About Polysexuality

With the fast changing times, the attraction of a person towards other people are also changing. The blurry lines of differences between the definite expressions of sexuality like bisexuality, polysexuality and pansexuality have often roused the curiosity among many and caused confusion among the others. While the traditional approach to sexual orientations only deem heteronormative attractions, that is "acceptable" and normal, the emergent clamoring about LGBTQ rights have catapulted homosexuality at the center of a lot of debates.

However, these terms are also closely intertwined with a rather binarist concept of sex and gender. On the contrary, one of the most dominant claims of modern discourse is that physical sex of a person is never the foremost determinant of one's gender identity. You may easily identify yourself with one or the other or even neither of the genders and consequently not conform to any of the set gender definitions. It is in this context that the terms cisgenders and transgenders come into play.

Similarly, for those attracted to individuals who do not necessarily belong to either the male or the female sex, the terms "polysexuality" and "pansexuality" become immensely pertinent. Pansexuality refers to attraction for anybody, irrespective of one's gender identity. The pansexuals are usually drawn to individuals from all genders. Polysexuality, on the other hand refers to a condition of attraction for multiple genders, but not necessarily all. The polysexuals harbor affinities for a specific gender, which may not necessarily be male or female.

Recent LGBTQ activism lays a lot of emphasis upon granting the due respect to as well as negating any stigmas whatsoever upon such expressions of unconventional sexual orientations. With the LGBTQ movement garnering greater steam over the recent past, more and more number of people are surfacing as polysexuals. In fact some of the well known faces from all across the globe may be counted among the polysexuals . Despite all these however, there are a few misconceptions that prevails all over.

Differentiating between bisexuality and polysexuality: Many a times, people refuse to register the difference between homosexuality, bisexuality and polysexuality. Either one expresses complete ignorance about these terms or tends to use the terms interchangeably without the slightest consideration of the existing nuances.

Insensitivity towards a non-normative sexuality: Often you may encounter people who not only are unwilling to understand your point, but would constantly discount the relevance of your sexuality. Polysexuality will only be an ambivalent jargon for them with no concrete reality and as for you, they will probably book you an appointment with the shrink.

Misconceptions about one's sexual life: If you have come out as polysexual, many might perceive you as a "loose-moraled" person with devious sexual fantasies and a highly promiscuous person. It is not uncommon to have a polysexual unduly shunned and discriminated against.

Can Yoga Improve Your IQ?

Can Yoga Improve Your IQ?

When you get a compliment, 'smart thinking or you are intelligent or that was intelligent of you', you definitely feel good. These comments fill us with confidence, admiration and pride and we want it to happen to us again and again. But owing to a busy schedule and long working hours it might not be possible. Having said this, it does not mean that a person cannot stay intelligent throughout. This can be easily achieved by regular meditation. Regular meditation and yoga helps the mind to be more reflective and efficient.

Here are reasons how yoga and meditation lead to an intellectual learning and growth:

  1. Utilizes the brain: Almost everyone uses one half of their brain more and this leads to imbalance. Meditation is believed to sync the left and the right hemispheres, thereby allowing neural connection and great processing power. When logical left and creative right brains start working in harmony, then solving problems becomes easy; and it also increases creativity, deep thinking comes to be known of and concentration and focus magnifies. Highly successful people usually display whole brain synchronization.
  2. Functional capabilities of brain enhance due to meditation: Research backs it that meditation increases the gray matter thickness of the brain regions, thus making the brain smarter, bigger and faster. This is very similar to doing physical exercise which makes the muscles denser and stronger. The increase in Functional Capabilities of brain is based on the concept of neuroplasticity, which states that our intelligence is not based on genetics and there are some things which can be done to improve the way our brain works. Meditation is a good brain enhancer with an ability to increase intelligence.
  3. Beneficial brainwave patterns can be seen: Meditation can help to guide the brainwaves into beneficial frequencies. The frequencies: alpha, theta and delta when guided can show case a myriad of benefits including idea generation, creativity, cognitive functioning, and intellectual capacity. Meditation helps to transform these beneficial states of mind and help boost the IQ.
  4. Develops intuition and insights: These are generally obtained through listening and developing to the inner voice. Thus meditation forms to be the basic key to tap these latent abilities. The intelligence can be mapped through tests and quizzes and is valuable at each level to stimulate insights and creativity. As per some people, inner intelligence, is considered to be the most important and best success in the world. Successful people including Steve Jobs have stated that their super revolutionary ideas and business acumen came through their intuition.
  5. Meditation helps in improving both short and long term memory: The key memory areas hippocampus and frontal lobe show increase in activity during meditation. By stimulating these areas, the short and long term memories are improved.

Hi Please do the following exercise: JPMR- This progressive muscle relaxation script relaxes your body and your mind. Suggested tips before starting this progressive muscle relaxation script Find a quiet place that is comfortable for you. Practice at a regular time during the day. Preferably not after you have eaten Find a comfortable position. If you are sitting, then keep your back straight and feet flat on the floor. If lying down (the preferred option as your body is supported by the floor) then you can put a pillow beneath your knees for extra support. Adopt a passive attitude to PMR. When tensing muscles (without straining), do so for roughly 5 seconds. When you relax your muscles do so for roughly 15-20 seconds before progressing to the next muscle group. Tense each muscle group once before progressing. Progressive muscle relaxation script Start out with a few relaxing breaths. Use the diaphragmatic breath, and as you exhale feel the tension begin to ebb away. Clench your fists. Move your awareness to your hands. Clench both of your fists for up to 5 seconds. Release for 15-20 seconds, imagining the tension ebbing out of your hands. Tighten your biceps. Move your attention to your arms. Draw your forearms toward your shoulders, creating a bicep. Hold for up to 5 seconds and then release for 15-20 seconds. As you release and imagine the tension flowing out of your biceps. Forehead and scalp. Move your attention to your forehead. As you inhale lift your eyebrows and wrinkle your forehead. Hold for up to 5 seconds and then release for 15-20 seconds. As you release, feel the relaxation of the muscles of the forehead. Facial muscles. Move your attention to your facial muscles. Furrow your eyebrows and purse your lips. Try to pull all of your facial muscles towards your nose. Hold for up to 5 seconds and then release for 15-20 seconds. As you release feel the relaxation of the facial muscles. Jaw. Bring your attention to your jaw. Clench your jaw tightly, feeling the tension in the surrounding muscles. Hold for up to 5 seconds and then release for 15-20 seconds. Relax the muscles and allow the tension to disappear. You may feel your mouth begin to open a little. Neck and shoulders. Now bring your awareness this region. Shrug your shoulders towards your ears. Feel the tension in the surrounding muscles. Hold for up to 5 seconds and then release for 15-20 seconds. Feel the tension in the muscles ebb away. Upper back/shoulders. Now bring your awareness between the shoulder blades. Push your shoulder blades back as if you were trying to get them to touch. Feel the tension in the surrounding muscles. Hold for up to 5 seconds and then release for 15-20 seconds. Feel the tension in between the shoulder blades ebb away. Upper chest. Now bring your awareness to your upper chest. Tighten the chest muscles and hold. Feel the tension in the upper chest muscles. Try to draw your navel in to your backbone. Feel your stomach muscles tighten. Hold for up to 5 seconds and then release for 15-20 seconds. Feel the tension in the abdominal muscles dissipate. Buttocks. Now bring your awareness to your buttocks area. Squeeze your buttocks together, consciously tightening the muscles in this region. Hold, hold hold…and now release for 15-20 seconds. Feel the tension in these muscles disappear. Thighs. Now bring your awareness to your thigh muscles. Try not to contract your stomach muscles as you consciously tighten your upper thigh muscles. Hold, hold hold…and now release for 15-20 seconds. Feel the tension in the thigh muscles dissipate. Calves. Now bring your focus to your calf muscles. Consciously tighten your calf muscles by pointing your toes. Hold, hold hold…and now release for 15-20 seconds. Feel the tension in the calf muscles flow away. Feet. Now bring your focus of attention to your feet. Tighten your feet by curling your toes toward the ground. Hold, hold and hold some more…and now release for 15-20 seconds. Feel the tension in the feet flow away. Mentally scan your body for any residual tension. If you find a muscle group with residual tension then tense and relax this area again. Feel a wave of relaxation, from the top of your head to the tip of your toes. When you are ready bring your awareness back to your breath and slowly open your eyes. This entire progressive muscle relaxation sequence should take you 15-25 minutes. CONSULT FOR THERAPY. All the best.

Hello doc ! This is not for me but a very close friend of mine, she seems to be under depression after her break up and some family issues , she is mature to understand things but she can't take herself off and out of this stuff , this has been goying on sice 3 years for now . She seems to be normal acts normally but she 5not the original one ,she cries n stress over small matters and has become indecisive , she keeps on taking online depression tests .Please guide me what could I do to help her get out of this

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd

Well, she is obviously not handling her situation well. She has to deal with her feelings. There is so much that has happened that that stress is taking a toll not because of it as such, but because she is not talking about it. Take her to a professional. You can support and encourage her to express herself. Take her out often and get her involved in social activities. I do not know her age but she can look at the prospect of marrying again. She certainly needs a companion in life, like all of us do. Perhaps some medication may also help, if she finds it too difficult to cope with the therapy. She has already delayed it by three years ? if you delay something which is a problem by inaction, it will only grow. That is what I see happening to her. So hurry and get her to help.

I have some problem with my memory. I can't remember anything after two days. What shall I do?

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd
Psychologist, Bangalore
You could be under some stress. Meet with a counselor and sort that out for good memory to return to you. In the meantime do the following: Daily exercise of at least half an hour is a must. Even if you go to a gym, ask for aerobic and/or callisthenic exercises with whatever else you are doing. A healthy body harbors a healthy mind. With regard to memory, it is very important that your brain and body is ideally rested to be able to recall whatever is required, rather comfortably. Puzzles pose problems to the brain that help it to use new pathways and neurons, which give the brain considerable exercise. It taxes the left brain to use logic to solve the myriad possibilities which other activities do not stimulate. Crosswords are excellent for vocabulary learning and use. Jigsaws and Rubik cube stimulate different permutations to finally settle on the most likely one. Picture completion and anagrams help approach problem solving from several angles. Do Sudoku, and memory co-relation activities and skills. Have a good night’s sleep, have a good breakfast of more proteins, meditate often, remain free of stress, eat a lot of fiber (whole grains, fruits and vegetables), nuts, avocado, eat dark chocolate, consume less of fat and use olive oil instead, do Yoga meditation exercises, etc. You need to check out if you are stronger visual or auditory. The visual is a better mode than the auditory. However, if you combine the two modes, you will get the best concentration. Have a special place of learning, which should be well lit, with soft painted walls, well-ventilated, with no distractions. When you get bored, study by writing. If you repeat learning at least five to seven times, you will apparently remember for a longer time. Sit comfortably but do not slouch. The reading material should be of a fairly large print. Study at small intervals of about 40 minutes and then take a break or change the subject. Short-term memory is a faculty of the left brain, and long-term memory is a feature of the right brain. When people are stressed, they tend to favor the right brain and abandon the left brain, where short-term memory resides. So, it is really very simple: deal with the stress and activate left brain functions. Here are a few suggestions to activate left brain function: shut your left nostril and breathe, move your eyes from right to left and vice versa for at least half a minute at a time, and do callisthenic exercises with some form of counting, regularly. There is a new exercise called Super Brain Yoga, which is done by holding the right earlobe with your left thumb and index finger, and the left earlobe with your right hand’s thumb and index finger. In this position you must squat down and rise up and do this for five minutes every day. There are some memory enhancing techniques and study methods that your teacher will be able to guide you with. If your home life is full of distractions and stress, it is likely to affect your memory, adversely. In that case, I suggest that the family goes for counseling too. The following foods do help too: Blueberries, walnuts, turmeric, Spinach, tomatoes, broccoli, acorn squash, green tea, oily fish, boiled egg, turkey, apples, oatmeal, leafy greens, lentils, pumpkin seeds, avocado, cinnamon, thyme, sunflower seeds, and red wine. Avoid sugar and junk food.

Dear, I can understand your emotions. Please don't worry. There are solutions for every problem. Your body do have the power to do hard work. You just have to be habitual. Earlier, you did many works. Once you became depressed, you could not do such work and that became a habit. Now, to overcome your lethargy and to start a new life style, you need motivation and you need to work hard. You will be able to manage your depression only if you learn to do many works, entertain yourself and be happy. The discoloration under your eyes could be due to sleeplessness. Exercise and other physical activities will surely provide you sleep. You may also talk to your psychiatrist and appraise him of your emotions. Take care.

Hi Doctor,
Often I get nervous and afraid while interacting with group of people. I keep on thinking what I will say ...
Hi, you need medication as well as psychotherapy for this. Practice mindfulness: The primary goal of mindful breathing is simply a calm, nonjudging awareness, allowing thoughts and feelings to come and go without getting caught up in them. Sit comfortably, with your eyes closed and your spine reasonably straight. Bring your attention to your breathing. Imagine that you have a balloon in your tummy. Every time you breathe in, the balloon inflates. Each time you breathe out, the balloon deflates. Notice the sensations in your abdomen as the balloon inflates and deflates. Your abdomen rising with the in-breath, and falling with the out-breath. Thoughts will come into your mind, and that’s okay, because that’s just what the human mind does. Simply notice those thoughts, then bring your attention back to your breathing. Likewise, you can notice sounds, physical feelings, and emotions, and again, just bring your attention back to your breathing. You don’t have to follow those thoughts or feelings, don’t judge yourself for having them, or analyse them in any way. It’s okay for the thoughts to be there. Just notice those thoughts, and let them drift on by, bringing your attention back to your breathing. Whenever you notice that your attention has drifted off and is becoming caught up in thoughts or feelings, simply note that the attention has drifted, and then gently bring the attention back to your breathing. It's okay and natural for thoughts to enter into your awareness, and for your attention to follow them. No matter how many times this happens, just keep bringing your attention back to your breathing.

5 Ways to Fight Depression If you feel depressed, it's best to do something about it — depression doesn't just go away on its own. In addition to getting help from a doctor or therapist, here are 5 things you can do to feel better. 1.Exercise. Take a 15- to 30-minute brisk walk every day — or dance, jog, or bike if you prefer. People who are depressed may not feel much like being active. In addition to getting aerobic exercise, some yoga poses can help relieve feelings of depression. Two other aspects of yoga — breathing exercises and meditation — can also help people with depression feel better. 2.Nurture yourself with good nutrition. Depression can affect appetite. One person may not feel like eating at all, but another might overeat. Proper nutrition can influence a person's mood and energy. So eat plenty of fruits and vegetables and get regular meals (even if you don't feel hungry, try to eat something light, like a piece of fruit, to keep you going). 3.Identify troubles, but don't dwell on them. Try to identify any situations that have contributed to your depression. When you know what's got you feeling blue and why, talk about it with a caring friend. Talking is a way to release the feelings and to receive some understanding. 4. Express yourself. With depression, a person's creativity and sense of fun may seem blocked. Exercise your imagination (painting, drawing, doodling, sewing, writing, dancing, composing music, etc.) and you not only get those creative juices flowing, you also loosen up some positive emotions. Take time to play with a friend or a pet, or do something fun for yourself. Find something to laugh about — a funny movie, perhaps. Laughter helps lighten your mood. 5. Try to notice good things. Depression affects a person's thoughts, making everything seem dismal, negative, and hopeless. If depression has you noticing only the negative, make an effort to notice the good things in life. Try to notice one thing, then try to think of one more. Consider your strengths, gifts, or blessings. Most of all, don't forget to be patient with yourself. Depression takes time to heal. If you are happy with these answers please click on "useful” link so that I can know my efforts are not wasted. If you want more clarifications or prescription for medicines consult me on this site to ask me directly and not in open questions session It's not easy to say exactly what causes depression and anxiety – it's different for everyone. Sometimes a difficult time in you or your mates' life can set off depression or anxiety, sometimes it's caused by a combination of things that has built up over time and sometimes, there's just no obvious cause at all.
