I have gone through spine surgery l4-l5, there is still numbness in my right leg, even after three years.
Hi thanks for your query and welcome to lybrate. I am Dr. Akshay from fortis hospital, new delhi. Actually the relief in symptoms will be better if surgery is done as early as symptoms appeared and I will have to see your discharge papers to understand what was the exact story in your case. Also a recent mri of ls spine can be of help along with a detailed neurological examination to see whether there is any compression there or not? do not hesitate to contact me if you need any further assistance. You can also discuss your case and treatment plans with me in a greater detail in a private consultation.

Dear if the baby is recovering then it is a very good sign. You should continue the physiotherapy and maintain the protien & calcium rich diet. The baby will recover completely within 18-24 months probably. Be healthy.

Dear jerking of whole body may be due to epileptic fits. You should get eeg & mri brain done. If jerking is associated with loss of awareness and consciousness then you must consult a neurologist immediately. Each such episode is dangerous and it causes harm to brain. All the best.

I am experiencing numbness in my legs after I sit for too long, but I am overweight too. What should i do?
Hi thanks for your query and welcome to lybrate. I am Dr. Akshay from fortis hospital, new delhi. Numbness is usually a symptom of nerve involvement and nerves can get involved in a number of ways, so it can be involvement at the level of lower back region, entrapment of a nerve along its course, in a systemic disease like diabetes or other metabolic pathology etc. So management will depend upon treatment of primary cause, physical therapy like tens, medications for neuropathic symptoms like pregabalin or gabapentin, vitamin b12 supplementation etc. Do not hesitate to contact me if you need any further assistance. You can also discuss your case and treatment plans with me in a greater detail in a private consultation.

Hi thanks for your query and welcome to lybrate. I am Dr. Akshay from fortis hospital, new delhi. You are very young to actually have persistent back and neck pains. If you have localized back and neck pain with no other symptoms like radiating upper limb pain or leg pain, neurological symptoms like numbness, weakness, paresthesias etc, then you can start with following recommendations for initial period of 2-3 weeks: - to maintain proper posture of your back & neck while working and sleeping - if pain is more then you can take a short course of an anti-inflammatory medication like tab etoshine or paracetamol or one which suits you - physical therapy initially under supervision of a trained physiotherapist and then to continue at home - adequate calcium & vitamin d intake if levels are low in body - ice packs can applied if your pain is acute, then hot fomentation can be done at home - analgesic spray for local application can be used and is easily available. - avoid lifting heavyweight/ acute forward bending in mornings etc we will observe you for next 2-3 weeks how you respond to this conservative management protocol. If you are not feeling better, then we will have to get some investigations like, dynamic x rays of lower back and neck region and a few blood tests for evaluation. Also you need to actually decrease your weight simultaneously to offload your spine of weight transmission. Do not hesitate to contact me if you need any further assistance. You can also discuss your case and treatment plans with me in a greater detail in a private consultation.

Causative Factors Behind Insomnia

Causative Factors Behind Insomnia

Insomnia is the condition of acute sleeplessness, and it takes a heavy toll on your mood, your energy levels, and your ability to concentrate and work during the day. Some of the most common symptoms of the condition are:

  • You find it difficult to fall asleep even if you are tired
  • Once you wake up in the middle of the night, you cannot get back to sleep
  • You cannot work or concentrate on anything during the day
  • You stay mostly fatigued, or irritated throughout the day
  • You have to depend on pills or alcohol to fall asleep.
  • You wake up very early in the morning, no matter how late you sleep

What could be the causes for insomnia?

Insomnia might last just a few days if it is induced by some temporary cause, like stress at your workplace, or any other personal issue you can be facing. However, when the cause is a long rooted one, insomnia might persist for a long time. There can be a mix of many causes for that to happen:

  • Psychological stress or other emotional discomforts - Common psychological problems like anxiety, depression, chronic work stress, grief, and also bipolar disorder can be the causes for insomnia.
  • Illness or other medical problems - There can be many medical causes or other illnesses at the root of insomnia like allergies, acute asthma, hyperthyroidism, Parkinson's disease, kidney related diseases and cancer as well.
  • Medications - There can be many drugs, which might be prescribed by your doctor, but still be responsible for insomnia. These include antidepressants, corticosteroids like thyroid hormone medicines, few blood pressure medications, certain contraceptives and stimulants for ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder).
  • Sleep Disorders - Insomnia, though in itself is a sleep disorder, can also be the symptoms for other sleep disorders like sleep apnea, restless leg syndrome, and other disorders related to jet lag or if you are working on a late night shift.

In addition to these causes, some daily lifestyle habits might act as triggers to insomnia, which include:

  • Consumption of large amounts of caffeine on a regular basis
  • Developing irregular sleep schedules
  • Taking your smartphone to bed and ending up spending a lot of time with it in the night
  • Eating late in the evening

Dear , the problem you are facing could be due to anxiety disorder. Anxiety disorders are a category of mental disorders characterized by feelings of anxiety and fear, where anxiety is a worry about future events and fear is a reaction to current events. These feelings may cause physical symptoms, such as a racing heart and shakiness. There are a number of anxiety disorders: including generalized anxiety disorder, a specific phobia, social anxiety disorder, separation anxiety disorder, agoraphobia, and panic disorder among others. While each has its own characteristics and symptoms, they all include symptoms of anxiety. I need to know more about your anxiety so that I will be able to diagnose it properly and provide you tips to overcome and manage your anxiety. Take care.

I am a 25 year old and have a headache since last 2.5 months. I have already seen doctors and they told that symptoms match to those of a migraine. I have already taken migraine medicines for over a month. But yet I encounter headache, heavy headedness and nausea daily. I don't understand why is it continuous? How to lower the frequency. I cannot concentrate at my work, at my study. I was going gym for some while which I have quit. My lifestyle is fine but again I always feel tired. Whenever I am alone I feel weirdly lonely and cry often. Are the continuous headaches because of migraine or is there a possibility that I am under depression. I have experienced many lows including a breakup, failure at a competitive exam recently. Should I consult a neurologist or a psychologist. I am not really a weak heart-ed person but I am really worried about my health, my current attitude and my future if things does not change. Kindly suggest.

Hi , firstly, I would like to thank you for having expressed your issues so very clearly. Well, as I understand, you have migraine since last 2.5 months, and you have been taking prothiaden for over a month now. Prothiaden, however, seems to be an anti-depressant and most of the symptoms that you have described like nausea, heavy headedness, headache etc are side effects of prothiaden which usually clear off after couple of weeks. Seemingly, your already existing headache (migraine as diagnosed) is not being helped through your current medication and the side effects of prothiaden probably add to your issues. Furthermore, in the given context, it is likely that anyone would get anxious, stressed out and eventually get into depression. That you feel weird, lonely and cry often, is indicative of you being depressed. I would advise you to meet up your physician whosoever you are consulting at present, and have a review of the treatment progress with no further delay. As there could still be better medications, he/ she may consider changing medication/ dose suitably as appropriate and one that has minimal side effects. At the same time, I would advise you to remain mentally strong as you already are, believe in yourself, and have faith and hope that there always is light at the end of the tunnel, however dark the tunnel may appear to be. Yogasanas, pranayams & meditation can also help you relax, de-stress and keep you focussed even during these tough times. At the same time, a trip to some hill station or some scenic natural place can help you relax, rejuvenate, think clearly and have a fresh perspective. For a second opinion, you should consult a psychologist if you have not consulted one already. He/ she may advise diagnostics & refer you appropriately as required. Keep up your dietary habits, lifestyle & hobbies and try enjoying every moment of your life irrespective. Hope this helps. You may connect with me in private to discuss and come up with a treatment plan that suits you in particular. All the best.
