Stuttering - How Can You Handle It?

Stuttering is a type of speech disorder wherein, a person speaks slower than normal. It is quite  common in the age group of 3 to 8. The relationship between stress and stuttering has been pondered over for decades now. A lot of people seem to believe that stress and stuttering are co-related. On the contrary, recent studies show that stress is more of a consequence rather than a cause of stuttering. If you take the first theory into consideration, then according to that, children would be the greatest victims of anxiety and stress. But it is seen that the level of stress increases proportionately with the increase in age.

Social anxiety in teenagers increases due to stuttering, when they come across individuals who can speak in a normal pace. This in turn can crush their self confidence and lead them to isolate themselves from social groups and people in general. Hence, it is important to deal with stuttering in the early ages or as and when it occurs. 

Sometimes stuttering can develop due to physical or mental trauma.  Most people with stuttering do not seek therapy for it because they might not think of it to be too severe. Little do they realise that a simple process of speech therapy can help them overcome this disability and rejuvenate their level of self-confidence.

It has also come to light, that people with relapse in stuttering post therapy has shown a three-fold increase in anxiety levels than normal. Hence we cannot ignore the strong relationship between stress and stuttering. So from the above evidence, it is safe to conclude that social anxiety or stress develops as a result of chronic stuttering.

How to deal with stress related to stuttering?

Seeking help is a great start to tackle your disability. If your stuttering is prominent enough to warrant therapy, you must seek professional help for the same. You must also learn to control your anxiety by dismissing any anxious thought or make sincere efforts in controlling physical anxiety.

You can also try to increase your social skills by participating in events, such as public speaking that can reduce your stress levels and make yourself more confident about yourself. One must also remember that a person is defined by what he does rather than what he says. So never let a minor disability come in the way of your self worth!

From last many year am suffering from a problem that some words stuck into my mouth while speaking I went blank I know I am suffering from some thing what is that I do not know.

It appears like a social anxiety or performance anxiety. Kindly try the following: 1. Write down your thoughts and while alone, stand in front of a mirror, and slowly read it aloud or imagine that you are talking to your friend/colleague, stand in front of the mirror and say the casual dialogues that you will have with your friend, colleague. 2. Check with yourself what kind of words do you get get stuck at? are they" names" places" or are these words difficult to pronounce? write it on a paper and while alone read these words loudly. 3. Please understand that we all make mistakes. So please allow yourself to make mistakes. Try to improve upon your speaking skills and every time you notice some progress in yourself, pat yourself or reward yourself. 4. You can overcome this with more and more practice. Practice different dialogues, when you are alone, you will gain confidence by doing this. 5. Have realistic expectations from yourself. We all are good at some skills, not good at some skills. Focus on your good points and skills. You need encouragement and support. Try to be with people who will understand and appreciate your efforts. Best of luck.

Sir can my stammering be cured with practice. please tell me what should I do to improve my speech. I feel very hurt when I stammer in front of someone. I think my breathing is not corect. Sir I am in serious trouble with my speech. I feel like suicide some times.

You can practise in front of a mirror and ,make a mental resolve to utter each word clearly and also try speech therapy and suicide is not a solution Many great men have had little stammering and they have all come up in life

Dear friend there are great speakers and public figures who had stammering. EMS Namboothiripadu was one great leader who's speach had been heard by large audiences. One journalist asked him humoursly "Do you always have stammering. He replied with more humour that "only when I speak" So don't loose confidence. Proud of your other capabilities. Dosage of the thyroid is always adjusted by seeing the reports, so get your thyroid testing done and check out whats the result, that will tell you whether the dosage is correct or not, do not self medicate yourself.
