Doctor, I'm 23 and a student. The problem that I'm facing is regarding slurred speech. It's as if I'm not being able to speak properly. This issue has been persisting since a very long time and its that I'm not being able to get over it. I've tried a lot but in vain. I'm presently on Arip MT 5 which I take in the morning along with Attentrol 25. And I have Rexipra 20 at night. I just need to get my confidence back which I've lost due to this speaking problem and wish to get it resolved as soon as possible. It would be of great help if you could help me overcome this.

Hi lybrate-user It is good to see that you have reached out for help to work on your stammering. I understand the difficulty it must be causing as you try to express your thoughts & opinions but find yourself getting stuck and in turn losing your self confidence. I understand how embarrassed you would feel when it happens before important stakeholders like a senior person at work, during a team meeting, when you are trying to make a point etc. Sachin to help you cope with stammering, could you share with me what happened recently that made you reach out for help? In your query, you have mentioned the intensity keeps on changing… Have you seen a pattern in situations when it becomes worse like talking to people of opposite gender, talking to a person in authority, addressing a group, statements starting with certain alphabets, etc. Stammering could result from physical or psychological factors. Consulting a speech therapist would be the first step. If you have already done that and find yourself stammering when you are experiencing stress, anxiety or other heightened emotions, I, as a counsellor could help you manage your emotions and effective ways of dealing with stammering. Regards

Dear lybrate user, welcome to lybrate. Stammering is" speaking with sudden involuntary pauses and a tendency to repeat the initial letters of words" or" say something with difficulty, repeating the initial letters of words and with sudden involuntary pauses" stammering could be due to two reasons. First reason is vocal cord misalignment. Second is psychological performance anxiety. First of all you should consult an ent specialist and evaluate your vocal chords. If there is problem, ent specialist will be able to correct it. If there is no problem with your vocal chords, the best option is stammer therapy. Take care.

Good luck! you can consult me in private with details of the onset and course of your brothers stammering so that I can guide you better.

lybrate-user you have a calm and composed personality, but you lack the skill to say 'no' It is perfectly fine to listen and accept to your own feelings. Do more introspection, that will help you to get in touch with your feelings. Feeling angry, upset or negative at a instance doesn't make you a bad person. Love yourself, listen to your feelings and speak for them at the very moment rather than carrying them with you.

Let your mind relax- anxiety or nervousness is one of the major causes of stammering. Through proper relaxation this problem can be easily solved. When you are requiired to speak up and make people listen to what you have to say, give yourself a few minutes to clear your mind. It doesn't matter how long it takes to clear your mind. Once the mind has already reached the optimum state of relaxation, next step is to think positive thoughts. Think only positive thoughts and do not worry that you are going to stutter. This in itself is a great cure which will give you an inner confidence whenever you need to communicate. Think about someone you feel comfortable talking with. Start talking softly. Visualize thoughts and word. Read out loud. Slow down your speed of speech. Do relaxation and breathing exercises.

Sir, my grandfather has several illnesses, and other doctors told me that it is not curable. Im mot certain what the diseases are, but im going to describe some conditions about him. My grandfather is unable to move properly and always lies on the bed. He can barely walk. His speech is very slurred and needs extra effort to speak clearly. It has gotten to the point where we are unable to understand him. He also remains always idle. He never moves and stares at the ceiling. He also had alzheimer before showing these conditions, where he sometimes forgot smaller details spoken to him. He now never speaks, does not react to our voices, and other external stimuli. Could you please tell me what is going on? Thank you.

Hi, I think your granfather is old enough to have such problem. Actually, as you told he is not able to speak or react and even move, he has become tired of speaking, coz he is clear enough that whatever he speaks others want understand and react, but I think he can definitely see others around him so please if he knows to read then, kindly write in bold letters "your affection towards him "if you really love him. I can understand from the way you have expressed your grandfather's difficulty that you love and care more your grandfather. Do not worry, you are still young to understand what exactly happened to him. Each and everyone as we Grow older and older, our organs function slowly decreases and then finally stops functioning then, that is the end, but some stay healthy for long, the reason is some are strong, some are weak, some are hereditary problem, some are not. Many reasons matter, what to do we are not God to do some magic right. But at this time, I want you to express your love to your dear grandfather through actions, Do take care of him as long as possible, he will feel the comfort and warmth definitely from you all that is the happiness you can give him. Take Care. With regards,
